I think it has to so something with the line used in fishing. Tackle also describes; Rigging on a ship, rope used with a pulley such as block and tackle, and rope used to harness animals to wagon and such.  This is just a best guess with no concrete evidence behind it.

Words more true have never been spoken....LOL

I think it is definitly related to the mechanism of block and tackle

First there is a nautical history for this system of ropes and pulleys to "hoist the mainsel"

second the principle is very similar.  a spooled device (reel) send line (rope) down a shaft (rod) where it changes direction.

I love questions like this.  Excellent post.

And back when all this came about, what we now call tackle was referred to as BAIT.  Probably some lazy people (like me) started using "tackle" as an all-encompassing term.

well "fishing tackle" encompasses everything..rods, reels, lures, hooks line....although you are probably still right as to why we call everything tackle, lol

i think its interesting to find out about the "history" thats never told about the sport we love.  Who stops to think about why its called "tackle", or why is that thing called a "jig"?  Just random questions that are part of why we do what we do today.

Hmm...  I call rods/reels - gear and lures- lures, baits or tackle and dollars - bucks.  ...lol  Not sure if that's regional or not.

As for other stuff, most of it makes sense like jigs, crankbaits named for how they were worked, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits for what they do, worms, stickbaits, craws, etc. for how they look, etc., etc.

I don't call my equipment "tackle."  I call it "linebacker"  It all goes on one end or the other of my line.  For what it's worth, I also call my Polomars and other knots "tight ends."  Would I lie?  ;D ;D ;D

Easy....everything you need is in the word:

T ubes

A ttractant (i.e. garlic)

C rankbaits

K raws

L izards

E lectronics

....hey, that's how we spell "Kraws" in the south.....

why do they call it tackle?

Because it rhymes with "Cackle", which is what your wife does after she finds the credit card receipt for your latest "Tackle" purchase.

Why does she cackle? Well, 'cause now she can head to the mall, credit card AND checkbook in hand, for a pedicure, new shoes, purse, some bling, and lunch with friends (on her=you) at La Cafe' Expensif, and a few drinkies at Chippendale's.

Don't yew know anything 'bout wimmins?

lol, Flyrod your posts are always good for a chuckle.

Flechero, I was thinking more along the lines of "the tackle store" or things like that.

The jig and stuff was just an example of questions that never get asked.  How often do we stop to think about WHY someone made these things we love today the way they did....who chose to put a skirt on a spinnerbait...

Who was the guy or gal that shaped the blades the way we know em today?  Who decided that using nylon line was better than rope or string?
