I own a 3.7  acre pond in Kentucky that I had the Fish and Wildlife department stock about 10 years ago. I had always assumed these were the standard largemouths...but after catching one and putting it in my aquarium, I'm not so sure. It's either a Kentucky largemouth (spotted bass) or a regular largemouth. Can someone please help me identify this fish? If provided with an e-mail address, I can forward the photo (it's too large to post on this site - more than 150kb).

Thanks in advance.

I have a pond that was stocked by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife around that time as well, and I've caught 4 fish that I believe are Kentucky bass judging by the pictures and descriptions I've seen.  These fish that I've caught are very similar to largemouth, except they are much lighter in color, yellow rather than green.  So I'm guessing that some Kentucky, or some hybrid, type of bass is being stocked.

Missouri has already documented a hybridized version of the LM/Spotted bass in Table Rock lake.  I did a little googling and KY has indicated they've seen the same cross breeding between the LM and SM with spotted bass.

Welcome aboard!  If you go to www.resize2mail.com and upload your picture, you can have it resized to fit here on this post.  The instructions are very easy, and if you save it once it's resized, you can probably upload it here.  ;)

Take your finger and scrape it across the tongue of the fish. If there is a little sand papery patch, its a spot.

Not conclusive enough but close enough, all spotted bass have the tooth patch on the tongue, 25% of all largemouths also have the tooth patch.

BTW Calumet, you can upload the pic directly from your PC:

See below the reply box, right to the letft in bold there 's a sign that says ATTACH, click on the "examine" box and a window will pop up, click on "my images", select the pic you want to show, the file name will appear in the white bar between ATTACH and examine, when you hit POST your picture will be uploaded.

Raul is correct.  We do have quite a bit of largemouth that have sandpaper on the tongue.  I can't say I have ever caught a spot without a sandpaper patch on the tongue.  The best way to tell a spot from a largemouth is the jawline and the back dorsal fins.  Do a google search on Largemouth Spotted Bass Identification.
