the ohh face Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 What book would you recommend? And not limited to bass or even freshwater angling, any nonfiction fishing book. Quote
Craw Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 It's hard to nail it down to only one book. Lots of great stuff out there in print. I'll recommend one in particular that really helped me out years ago. BASS STRATEGIES by Kevin VamDam Quote
BASS fisherman Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I agree with the above post about not being able to only pick one. A few good ones- "Bass Wisdom" by Homer Circle, Largemouth bass by In-fisherman, "Better Bass Fishing, the Dave Ramero way" by Dave Ramero, If your into tournament fishing, Ike's book is a good one too, but I can't remember the name of it at the moment. I'd say that it really depends on what "level" your at in bass fishing to as what book I would suggest. "Bass Wisdom" and Dave Ramero's book are both good for a begginer to start with but they also have some great tips to garrantee some bass. The In fisherman books are full of information that I think would be incredibly overwhelming to a begginer to try and absorb. But for someone who has fished a few years, they have alot of great info that would coincide, or mesh with what you already know. And if you don't know that much, sit down to read those books. Tons of great info. Quote
Michael H Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I haven't read to many fishing books but by far my favorite is kevin vandams bass strategies is my favorite. Quote

Troutfisher Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 "Hooked for Life" by Jimmy Houston. Inspirational and full of bass tips! http://www.amazon.com/Hooked-Life-Jimmy-Houston/dp/0849955041 Quote
BassChaser57 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I agree that KVD has a great book for learning how to jerk lips but the BEST one for understanding and learning about Bass it "Knowing Bass" by Keith A. Jones,PHD. He has worked for Berkley and uses their scientific data to educate on what bass do and why. He does not tell us how to catch them, just what makes them tick so we can understand the wold of the bass and how they are programmed. We then can use this information to learn and help us be educated anglers and not simply rely on being lucky to catch fish. I am convinced the best anglers can't rely on luck to stay in the money, they have to understand the bass and know what the bass are doing and where they will be given the conditions. This book has some great info but could almost be classified as a bass textbook instead of a fishing book. I would classify it as a must read for serious and advanced anglers! 8-) Quote
everettvet Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I got "Secrets of a Champion" last fall and really enjoyed it. KVD did that book also. Quick funny story: I had it out the other night and my 4 year old said please read me a book. I said "sure, go get one." He came back with that book! I have never been so proud and my wife never so scared! It was great! And I did read a chapter to him. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted January 4, 2007 Super User Posted January 4, 2007 There's a number of good ones, but I agree with some of the other posters here. KVD's Bass Strategies contains a lot of information in a concise format and it is very well organized. I've had it for quite awhile but I still refer to it now and then. Quote
CyBasser Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 What book would you recommend? And not limited to bass or even freshwater angling, any nonfiction fishing book. Hi there, It is very hard to pinpoint a "general purpose" fishing book that covers many species - there are plenty around. As for specific bass books, I am a bit surprised that no-one mentioned a rather old (early 80s I believe) book. I am referring to "Advanced Bass Fishing" by John Weiss. That book is practically a "bible" on bass fishing. It covers in exquisite detail practically everything regarding the life history and behavior of bass (all three - LMB, SMB, spotted), details everything regarding the various forms of bass habitat, and also gives a well-rounded overview of all main bass fishing techniques, along with many tips and pirks. For me, reading that book was like a relevation. OK, it is a bit outdated obviously regarding some new lures and techniques (like dropshot or swimbaits) that were not in use then, but the overall amount of information is nothing short of amazing. In addition, it is very well written and very readable. I can't give you more info now as I have borrowed it to my closest fishing buddy to read, I hope he does (Vyron - you there?? ). Another very nice bass book of the same age is "Bass Fishing Fundamentals" by Ken Schultz. I have recently obtained the 2nd (1986) edition, and again, although outdated, it's quite a source of information. I personally believe that Weiss' book is really tops, but Schultz's book is not far behind. I have also read a rather recent book by a Bassmaster's Steve Price (unfortunately I am not sure about the title, something like Bass Fishing Tips) - another very informative book but only technique-specific oriented. Finally, KVD's "Secrets of a Champion" is a nice tiny book full of useful tips well worth having... Quote
Water Dog Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I agree on "Knowing Bass" by Keith A. Jones,PHD as a must read for anyone serious about bass fishing. There is a lot of technical stuff on bass that I skipped over but there is also a lot of technical stuff that they turned into practical stuff that everyone can benefit from. Go to B&N and smoke it over. Quote
llPa1nll Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I have read KVDs book and "I caught a big un'... and let em go" by Jimmy Huston, they were ok. My favorite Books by far are the two that Denny Brauer released some time ago. These Books are a how too on his tactics. The first "Denny Brauer's Winning Tournament Tactics" and Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets. By far the best books I have read, hands down. Quote
BassinAssassin Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I really enjoyed Tom Mann's Think Like a Fish. It's not really focused on fishing techniques, but it's mainly a bunch of funny fishing stories as told by Tom Mann. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to laugh just a little bit. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 7, 2007 Super User Posted January 7, 2007 All the books by Elwood L. " Buck" Perry, they are a little expensive but well worth it, you'll learn how to locate bass. If you can't locate em you can't catch em Quote
the ohh face Posted January 7, 2007 Author Posted January 7, 2007 thanks guys, I think ill start with the ones I can find at the library Quote
