What technique or bait should you use...but dont ?

Is there something that you need to work on or a certain bait you need to get familiar with that you feel will help your game?

In 2006 I had my mind set on getting back in touch with my jigs (havent fished them like I should for 3-4 years) and also to give tube baits a legitimate chance.I accomplished the jig part with good success but hardly even tried any tube baits.I probably threw a tube for a grand total of 30 minutes this whole year and switched colors 3 times in those 30 minutes.....just didnt give it long enough to work.

In 2007,I'm going to give the tube baits another shot.....my home lake has too many docks to not be throwin' a tube at some point.

This is a good question. I have said to myself 100 times, "I'm going to catch fish on crankbaits". I have an expensive cranking reel, a custom cranking rod, a box full of LCs, DTs, Ratl Traps, you name it, but I can count on my fingers how many times I have fished with them this past year. I read post after post about how many folks have murdered bass and caught their PB with cranks, but I have only caught a small handfull of fish with them. I know I'm cheating myself out of some nice fish because I don't discipline myself to work at fishing them. For the 101st time I will say "this year I'm going to catch fish with crankbaits".

I spent a good deal of 2006 focused on fishing a jig, with some success. That is still my #1 objective for 2007.

FBL, I think we are in the same boat! Before I read your post, those were the 3 types of baits, that came to mind. I usually use Spinnerbaits, and Crankbaits most of the time, but most of my friends swear by plastics, and usually catch bigger fish. I think the reason I use SBs and CBs is because there is not alot to it, and they usually produce well. They may not catch the biggest fish, but they usually catch more. Plastics, to me, take to much time, and I am kind of impatient. lol I am trying to use plastics more, and hope I get better at it, real soon! lol

um, lets see.......

dropshot, c-rig, jigs, crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters, jiging spoons, ratltraps, t-rigged worms, and probably trick worms.

Every time out ill try something for a minute or two and its back to senkos, tubes, shakey heads, and sometimes spinnerbaits. But i did gain some confidence in cranks, caught some on a fat rap......

I will echo the Crankbait sentiment. Occasionally, I will throw them. Unfortunately, I really dont like anything less than losing a perfectly good lure, which seems to happen just about every time I used cranks. Stupid me was at BPS in Harrisburg today, and got everything but the plug knocker I wanted. I think that once I get one of those, I wont be afraid to attack some Southern PA stump fields with confidence.

I should be using the Carolina rig more and learning all I can about it. I know it's very popular and I know it works but it just doesn't click for me. I've been in the boat with my dad and watched him catch bass after bass with it but I can't get anything going when I try it. I hope that one day I'll get the Carolina rigging bug and develop a real passion for it but for now it's kind of a mystery to me. I know for a fact that this handicap is hurting my summer time success.

Isn't it funny how we all tend to leave something out of the game. I am as guilty as the next guy. When I am fishing for green bass I flip or pitch jigs as well as tubes 80% of the time. Its just hard for me to put down that 12" worm, black 1/2oz jig with a flippin blue trailer or 5" black/red flake tube, they work so well. My least favorite way to fish, and also something I rarely do, is throw a crankbait. I have tons of them and have caught fish on them but, at least for me, I have not gotten those quality fish on them, at least not consistantly. I have witnessed the opposite. I keep saying that I am going to throw them more but, then when I go to tie one on I switch to a spinnerbait instead. One reason I don't throw them is because I hate treble hooks, or trouble hooks, as I call them. I am going to break out the Normans and DT's I have this year and give it some more time. I do like to throw no.10 Huskey Jerks for smallies in the river and it is a good way to wax them as well as fun but....yada,yada,yada.

Try this!!

First take ALL your baits out of the boat! Then decide which bait you want to master. Put only that bait in the boat and go fishing! I did this years ago when I decided I wanted to learn how to fish a crankbait effectively! I loaded a tackle box with crankbaits of different colors and diving depths and fished them every day for two weeks solid till I figured out how to catch fish on them!

Like fivebasslimit, I need to work with tubes.  I've used them a little bit, but I always go back to plastic worms and creatures.  I also plan on working with the drop shot rig a lot more.

When I got back into fishing after a 10 year layoff I really fished a splitshot rig hard.

Lately I've been throwing cranks, spinners and jigs.

I'm going balance my reaction presentations with the splitshot rig.
