Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 GIVE ME NUMBERS. HOW CAN YOU GET TIRED OF CATCHING 20-40 SMALLMOUTH IN THE 2-4# CLASS? ANY DAY I GO OUT AND ONLY CATCH ONE OR TWO FISH I CONSIDER IT A LESS THAN STELLAR DAY. WHEN I COME HOME AFTER WRESTLING WITH A BUNCH OF ILL-TEMPERED SMALLMOUTH I'M A HAPPY MAN. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 "In search of the World Record smallmouth" I realize this thread is just about "personal preference," but if you are really after a World Record or just bigger smallmouth, I suggest fishing some different structure, maybe another area in the lake that is more remote. It is highly unlikely that you will find the biggest bass in St. Clair fishing spots that produce 20-40 bass in a day. Big bass don't associate with smaller bass. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 There is a gray area here. Similar to what Triton9 said, I would prefer catching 5 bass over 5 lbs than 20 one to three pounders. However, if I were to get skunked a few times in a row because I'm fishing for nothing but hawgs, I would prefer catching at least some smaller fish to make up for the lack of action. I don't know exactly where the line is drawn to determine when I would prefer quantity as opposed to quality, but at some point it does occur. Overall, I'm looking for bigger fish, but I enjoy catching two and three pounders also. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 I'll take Big Bass. Matt. Quote
BD Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 I am throwing for bigger bass only/solely. A 3lb'er to me is getting started. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 Before entering this thread I thought that the answer was pretty obvious. But after reading some of the thought-provoking replies, I realized that I was wrong. I can definitely relate to the reply posted by LowBudgetHookers. In essence, if my outing is a selfish one, I'm thinking only of big, bigger & best. If I have a child along or a novice to the sport, then I want numbers, in fact maybe panfish over bass. Okay now it's time to come clean, completely clean. During a day when I can't buy a bass I start thinking about numbers, and the number is ONE. Roger Quote
Peter E. Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 I agree with Roger on that one, Personally bug and bigger is all fine and dandy, i simply love to fish, I will go for the biggest fish in the system but I have noticed that there are times that the days without any fish are more productive than the days with many large fish. If I had have been hauling them out hand over fist I would have missed something that perhaps I needed more than fish, if you catch my drift. Quote
BASS fisherman Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 I will always choose to fish for bigger bass over numbers. But this time of year, I'll take the new world record bass that Raul posted about a week or so ago. I can't catch anything but weeds, trees, and rocks. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted November 28, 2006 Super User Posted November 28, 2006 I BEG TO DIFFER ON THAT ONE ROADWARRIOR. EVERY SMALLMOUTH I'VE CAUGHT OVER SIX POUNDS WAS CAUGHT WHILE CATCHING A BOATLOAD OF 2-4 POUND FISH. Quote
Captain Cali Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 I don't care if I ever catch another bass under 5 lbs, largemouth or smallmouth. Go big or go home. I like two kinds of bass: Big Ole Goodun's and Good Ole Biggun's. That about sums it up. Although I'd take any size smallie at this point! Quote
BASS fisherman Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 You Cali folks shouldn't even respond to this thread. :-X Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 28, 2006 Super User Posted November 28, 2006 MALTESE FALCON, If it ain't broken, don't fix it. You have the ideal situation. My bigger fish always seem to be loners, isolated from the pack. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 28, 2006 Super User Posted November 28, 2006 Go big or go home. I'm for the big ones all the way. Catching one 4lber instead of three 2lbers is a better day in MHO. Well, lets see now...in a tourny, I think you would be odd man out. I would love to weigh in three two pound fish to your single four pound fish. If you win the lunker money, it will still be a lot less than first place in the tournament. I am a numbers kind of guy, I like to stay busy when I am on the water. See you on tournament day Quote
scott000 Posted November 28, 2006 Author Posted November 28, 2006 i always carry pan jigs with me so when im getting skunked (not litterally, just not catchin the bass) i can catch atleast something Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Go big or go home. I'm for the big ones all the way. Catching one 4lber instead of three 2lbers is a better day in MHO. If you win the lunker money, it will still be a lot less than first place in the tournament. I am a numbers kind of guy, I like to stay busy when I am on the water. See you on tournament day I dont fish tournies. I would if i was old enough, but i'm not. If fish for fun, for the thrill of feeling your drag pull out. For the exitement when your rod tries to pull from your hands and when a lunker leaps out of the water. I fish for the biggest bass in the lake, no less. Sure, catching a 2lber is fun. But catching a big one is beond fun. If I ever fish tourneys, then i will be fishing for money, not fun. In this case three 2lbers are better than two 4lbers. But when i'm just fishing for the fun of it, I cast each cast expecting my personal best, not a ounce less. I've said it before, and i'll say it a million times more. Go big or go home. Matt Quote
ga_hawghauler Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 durning tourneys i will go after quanity till i get my limit then switch over to looking for the bigger ones. I have fished tourneys were if you had a decent size limit then you would pretty much be in the money. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 30, 2006 Super User Posted November 30, 2006 I like to catch hawgs, but if I'm getting skunked I won't turn my nose up at 10-20 dinks. Quote
CyBasser Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Big is good. Bigger is better! : Biggest is BEST!!! Quote
Pa Angler Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Show me the lunkers. I would sooner catch 1 5lb Bass rather them 5 1lb Bass. Quote
