Super User senile1 Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 AGGRESSIVE implies a disposition to dominate often in disregard of others' rights or in determined and energetic pursuit of one's ends Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Through aggression one accomplishes dominances I agree. But in a boxing match, the fighter who doesn't let his aggression get the best of him and picks his punches wins. (Mike Tyson lets his aggression take over, and because of this he is no longer a good fighter.) The defensive end who rushes in full speed at the quarterback will miss more often than a calculated approach because the quarterback will side-step him. I guess I'm saying the bass that has control of its aggression and doesn't use it, except at appropriate times will be more likely to survive and be dominant, whereas the younger, smaller bass will use its aggression too many times, some of which are not appropriate and will result in that fish's demise. Using aggression at the right time results in dominance. Using it in a helter-skelter fashion results in getting your butt kicked. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 14, 2006 Author Super User Posted November 14, 2006 Big bass feed more aggressively, but they also feed more efficiently (maximize food intake and minimize energy output). So what does all this aggression/dominances have to do with catching big bass? Simple, slow down, & work an area effectively not aggressively You may have to cull through some small fish but the big boys are there Quote
FIN-S-R Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Bigger Bass are selectivley as agressive as smaller fish, and are of course more dominant due to size. :From My earlier post Think about it like this.... There is a finite amount of energy out there available to fish to consume in relation to individual size. This is not a linear scale: e.i. The total amount of available energy does not increase directly with the fish size...SO As a fish gets bigger it's "personal space" or territory gets bigger so as to be able to consume the needed energy to maintain an increased body size- thus more dominant over a given area. The size of this area of dominance depends on density of available energy in an area, and of course availability of acceptable spawning sites If a fish cannot establish "dominance" it will not be able to increase in size. Availablity of the aforementioned factors and competition dictate the amount of aggression needed in order to establish and maintain a fish's "personal space". So a fish needs to be more frequently aggressive to compete when it is small, and a bigger fish is more dominant so it does not have to expend the same amount of frequent energy on aggression, though the level of agression will be similar throughout sizes. The bigger fish is just more selective in the expendature of agression, and it can do this because of size. Its a never ending cycle, and by this logic, the biggest fish in the system will be the "laziest" Quote
Peter E. Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 ;D FIN-S-R, I am in total agreement. I think you hit completely on the head. Saying this watch when another *** swims into that lazy monsters territory... He doesn't stay long, to me that is aggression. Agression is not nessecarily just alot of movement and eating. Cows eat all the time and they are pretty docile to me. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 This is a vibrant thread, but realistically, it rests pretty heavily on "semantics". It does bring to mind an old joke that I'd like to share: Two bulls are rounding the crest of a knoll, and as soon as they mount the rise they can see a half dozen cows grazing in the field below. The young bull blurts out "HEY, let's run down there and meet one of the those cows!!!!" The old bull replies, "Nah, let's walk down there and meet them all." Roger Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 14, 2006 Super User Posted November 14, 2006 Big bass rule . The smaller bass are just ignorant . Quote

Guest avid Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Roger knows, as do we all that is a family friendly thread. He wisely and considerately chose his words with that fact in mind. Had he not, Glenns programing would have done it automatically. PS. I only commented about his hair becuase I seemed to have misplaced mine Quote
