Guest ouachitabassangler Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I've caught my own or a partner's rod & reel twice by getting right on it. I've caught one old rod & reel while fishing, bringing up line first. I always try to pull all the line I catch to prevent it getting in a prop. One time an old steel rod was on the end. I've gone out to help retrieve dunked rods several times with success. Fairly often someone will ask for help by posting the news at baitshops, passing the word about exact location of the loss, so most of us will give those spots a good try. If it's found that's noted on the announcement and around the local morning gathering places where guides meet customers. I've never fish a nice rig whose owner I knew, and make effort to locate the owner. A good confirmation, simply brand and where lost, will get it returned. I'd want the same treatment. Jim Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 6, 2006 Super User Posted September 6, 2006 One of the best fighting things I 've caught was a hat, oh man what a fight ! Quote
Pond Hopper Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I caught some line once that had a bobber, hook, and fish on it. I also caught a trailer tire once that fought like a turtle, I e ven had my buddy run to the truck to get a hatchet. No head to cut off though on a tire. Also had a catfish once pull a rod in on a private lake, the rod popped up in the middle of the lake, had to take a tube and swim out there then pull the guy in on the tube as he fought the fish. One of the funniest things Ive seen. Corey Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 6, 2006 Super User Posted September 6, 2006 Didn't catch one, but found one. Little island on my riverfront land. About two weeks after a flood. Was out cutting firewood, saw a stick that looked...different. Waded across to the island, found a nice Shimano rod with a junker Garcia spinning reel. Rod was still in pretty good shape. Used it for almost 10 years before snapping it in half at the beach. Quote
Pa Angler Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 I never caught one but did find one leaning up against a tree when I was bank fishing back in the early 70's. Quote
Muddpuppy Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Not accidentally, but ya know, you gotta do what you gotta do when you see your friend 's rod flying through the air. : Last time I saw or rather heard that happen was when I snagged a friends rod durring a cast and slung it out out of the boat and into the lake. ;D We were night fishing and heard a splash, then later found that the rod was missing. I'm not sure this really counts though. Quote
darren2569 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 My wife and I were fishing a couple of weeks ago and we were moving to a new spot so she went to pull up the anchor and a rod came with it. The rod was shot but the reel is like new (after I cleaned the mud out of it). Its a abumatic, and i like it cause it eas FREE Quote
jwright Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Never cought a rod but once I set the hook while fishing a fluke and snapped my line. A few minutes later i threw a fluke to the same spot and cought a fish. I was suprised to find a my hook and fluke in it's mouth. Quote
Dane Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 My father and I were fishing on a fly-in lake in canada, we went with a few of his friends from work, and generally fished the same location on 2 seperate boats. As we are fishing, my father's friend sets down his pole, mid-cast, and opens the cooler and pulls out a brew. He looks at us in the other boat, holds his beer over his head, and says his famous last words. "This is as good as it gets boys!" without missing a beat, the moment he gets done speaking, his rod goes flying off the boat. The events that transpired combined with the look on his face was by far the funniest moment I've ever been a part of. He eventually caught his rod later on, and now is at the cabin over the front door, with a wooden sign underneath that is enscribed "As good as it gets" Quote
brad_snc Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 not a rod, but my dad once dove down and, unbeknownst to my uncle, placed a full beer can on my uncle's hook... to this day, he thinks he caught a beer Quote
Fish Chris Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 I've probably caught 6 or 8 of them, but most were shot, and worthless. Earlier this year, however, I too caught an almost new Shimano rod, with a perfect condition Curado reel attached :-) ......too bad I don't use baitcasters.... nor Shimano gear. Sorry for the poor guy that lost it, but lucky for my fishing buddy though :-) Peace, Fish Quote
BASS fisherman Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 I have yet to catch a rod. But I have caught a few crankbaits, 2 of which were rigged together. They were both new rebel cranks. The other was a luhr jensen crank, that had been in the water for a while. It was covered in slime. I always hook into other peoples' broken off line, and as I pull it in, and wind it up to toss out, I alwas hope that there is something other than a hook on the other end. And so far I haven't got anything good. :-[ Quote
paparock Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 No, but my great nephew lost one to a catfish right after I told him it was going to happen if he kept laying that rod down and and walking away from it but then what to old folks know. How do I know it was a catfish? The water was clear and the fish kept swimming by within view but well out of reach. I think it was rubbing it in on my great nephew. I know I got a good laugh or two or three. ;D Quote
KYbass1276 Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 I've never caught any rods some garbage here and there. I went fishing with my wifes uncle and he told me one day and this had to be a streak of bad luck to happen but anyway said he caught a condom. Then he said a few hours later he caught another one. He was using a crankbait both times he said. Just got out the Scicors and cut the line. Quote
Vorlin Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 We were on a charter in the Chesapeke(sp?) recently and one of our party lost a combo with a fish on. Sure enough, I pulled a double (a real double, two spot) within two minuets of this and one of those fish had two hooks in him. Pulled that line in hand over hand and gave the first mate their combo back. The mate said it's actually pretty common because most people drop them with a fish on and the fish don't stop eating even with the hook in them. It's simply a matter of pulling in spot after spot until you use up enough blood worms for someone to get the same fish on again and then you get your combo back. Simply stay anchored in the same place and keep on fishing... you have a pretty good chance of getting your stuff back. Vorlin Quote
bassholebuster14 Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 one time on a dare i was jumping up and down on one foot with my eyis closed singing mary had a little lamb on a wet log over a creak with my rod. Bean Counter Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 When I read this post last week I was thinking I have been fishing for almost 50 years and have never lost a rod overboard, these guys are careless. Then yesterday I was reeelin in a five pounder and the wind pushed my jon boat into a bush catching a St Croix Avid with a Pfleuger Trion reel and flipping it into the water. I could just see it about 10 feet down. It took me about 2 hours to snag it with a jig & retreive it. My apologies to all those who I bad mouthed. Quote
mudcatwilly Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I've caught a ton of quality lures, especially in timber. Once snagged a Huddleston swimbait. I was stoked. Then I hung up and lost it 15 minutes later. Easy come, easy go. Quote
Troutfisher Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I was surf fishing this summer and I had a double rig on, and I went to make a cast and the bail flipped on me, and the rig went flying. I watched it fly for a second, the two hooks, steel leader, pyramid weight, and bait all gone. Other than a little annoyed, I tied another one on and continued to fish. On my third cast with the new rig, I felt something, and I set the hook. I fought this "fish" until I brought it in, and realized it was my snapped rig....I had hooked it through the top eyelet!
