BassHunter266 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 yesterday I caught a bran new team daiwa ceilio rod, and a shimano baitcast reel! the reel will need work but the rod is great, I looked up the rod on line and it is worth $200. ;D I feel sorry for the person that lost it :'( Quote
toothdoc Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Last year I was bank fishing and a fellow angler near me announced that he though he caught something that I hadn't ever caught before. He pulled up an inexpensive spinning rod and reel. It looked like some kid had probably dropped it into the water, since it was close to shore. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 5, 2006 Super User Posted September 5, 2006 I have never caught a rod but a friend of mine has; and on his first try to save it. Another friend got his rod back when his fishing partner hooked onto it after knocking it over in Lake Gaston. So that's two guys that I know retrieved their own rigs. I do not know of anyone who just hooked a rod and reel. Finders keepers! Enjoy the rig. Quote
Nick_Barr Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I was fishing in a tournament dragging a jighead and I thought I had a fish on and in fact I hooked the top Eye Guide of a 15 year old Shimano AX Combo valued at $15 at Wal-Mart.!!!!!! Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 5, 2006 Super User Posted September 5, 2006 Not accidentally, but ya know, you gotta do what you gotta do when you see your friend 's rod flying through the air. : Quote
jiangtao Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 A friend of mine caught a plastic lawn chair once! The funny side of the story is that one night we were Catfishing and the guy's property we were fishing on had a few too many beers and fell into the water taking the chair with him. While we were telling our drunken buddy about the incident he replied "I knew I was missing a chair!!" "I think that there might be another one down there somewhere!" Sure enough, I caught the other one! My wife isn't a big fisher, but she has caught in one night a : rock [explain that one] 2 coke bottles, and a turtle! I always give her a lure that she won't lose and one time, after giving her a spoon, she pulled in a 3 lb Bass! Go figure.. Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 5, 2006 Super User Posted September 5, 2006 Maybe that chair belongs to the lady who 's underwear I caught once, XXXXL size, man you could easily put those on a hippo and they would fit. ;D Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 About 8 of us guys take a long fishing weekend every spring and fall at a favorite Southern Illinois lake . One time one of the guys, Steve, was sight fishing a particularly big bass for 30 minutes...it finally bit, only to break the line next to the boat. Steve got so mad he broke his pole in two and threw it into the lake. My buddy and I went back later that day and were able to fish the pole out of the lake. It now hangs on a wall at the cabin as a reminder for Steve. ;D Quote
vincedia Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I caught two so far...neither were complete or worth a darn. The first I snagged a tree, and as I was trying to get it un-snagged, it got tangled in some line. Attached to the line was a rod tip...only the top half of the rod, the line, and a hook were left. Then when trying last months challenge of deep water cranks, I hooked into something down about 40-50'. It was half a rod again. I got it hooked right in the top eye. It was broken, and I got the top half. I was scared pulling up the second one, I thought it was some type of snake. Vince Quote
Banor Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I've lost 3 different combos on 3 different lakes this year. 2 of the 3 I lost to a jet skis that ran full speed within 20 feet of me. There should be jet ski law for bass anglers similar to like doe permits.... you get 1 a year... B Quote
Super User Alpster Posted September 5, 2006 Super User Posted September 5, 2006 When I was a kid (when dinosaurs ruled) I borrowed my mother's (yes my mom's) Ambassaduer & rod without permission. My cousins & I went down to the river (Mississippi) to fish for hardhead catfish. They are great fun to catch. We were horsing around and the rod & reel got knocked out of my hand into the water (we were fishing off a tug boat dock) I instantly jumped in to try to get it but really had no chance, it sunk like a rock. I came up out of the water with tears in my eyes, because I knew I was doomed for losing that rod. As my cousin helped me climb back up on the dock I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. It was the hook at the end of the line. Freespool button was pushed so I had to pull all the line out first but got the rig back and saved my bacon. Ronnie Quote
pondhopper Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Yes, from a bridge wing wall down in FLA. As me and my pal were setting up on the wall, another angler was leaving and telling us the story of how a huge fish, "probably a tarpon", according to him, had just taken his new rod and reel right off the wing wall. Ten minutes later my first cast got me a brand new zebco 404 rig complete with 100yds of 10ld stren and an eight inch salt cat with the hook already set. Quote
Frank19 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Never caught one but I have heard countless stories of kids letting their rod go when a fish bites. It would suck to be the fish that has to swim around dragging a kids rod and reel around ;D Quote
Guest avid Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I have saved one of my own on a DD22. Me too, I never caught anyone elses, but so far I've managed to reclaim everyone of mine that the lake decided to eat. Quote
Minuteman Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Found an Ultra Light setup the other year. It was a pretty nice one. They used to stock trout in a stream near my house and it would be a madhouse on opening day. I used to drive down and watch the circus taking pictures of people tangled up and arguing. Years later walking along the creek after some heavy storms I found it washed up in some brush. Probably was in there for 10 years or more. The reel was worthless, but I still have the rod. I keep it as a spare and don't think I've ever used it. Quote
KenDammit28 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I've never seen a rod..what do they look like? How big do they grow? Where are they generally located? I never heard of rods in Kentucky...do they put up a good fight? I might have to call a guide somewhere that rods are located and go fishin for some! Quote
BigBass003 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Well Ive never caught a rod but here is a funny story real quick.. A club member was fishing one of our tourneys and I watched him yank his rod back and say I got a big one.So as his rod is almost in half and hes steady reeling, hes just about at the boat when out of the water comes a 40oz beer can.Needless to say we attached it to a board and gave it to him as a trophy to hang up on his wall.. LOL Quote
chs773 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 me and one of my friends were catfishing and i was using one of my bass fishing rods (something i will never do again). So i get a bite and it pulls my rod it. I was gonna jump in but i couldnt get my pants off and i had my cell phone and like 300 dollars in my pocket. so i couldnt jump in after the rod and my friend thought i was gonna jump in so he didnt. So i was mad b.c i thought i just lost my baitcaster. So i stoped fishing that day and me and my friend tried to find the rod by scooping the lake floor with a rod hoping 2 catch some line or somehthing but no luck. So then my friend starts fishing again. 10 minutes later he gets a bite and reels the fish in i go 2 get it out of the water and i notcied it had my hook in its mouth so we quickly got the fish on the dock and i pulled the line up and got my rod back. i guess the catfish tried to get rid of the rod and twisted around my friends line. But anyways i got my rod back but the only problem the drag on my real is broken Quote
fishingJ Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 My uncle was fishing once and he had to help someone so he dropped his road while the lure was stil in the water. A fish took the rod into the water then a week later his friend was fishing a couple miles downshore and he ended up catching my uncles rod and the fish was still on the line. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted September 6, 2006 Super User Posted September 6, 2006 I caught a 6 1/2 foot baitcaster once with a Garcia 5500C on it. The cork on the rod was shot as well as the wrappings on the guides so I pitched it, the reel was salvageable and I used it as a backup for a couple years till I sold it on Ebay. Of the 5 or 6 rod n reel combo's I've had go overboard over the years I've only managed to save a couple of them. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 6, 2006 Super User Posted September 6, 2006 My brother caught a hula grub on a hook one time. I think his hook went right into the side of the grub. He pulled it up and had the funniest look on his face, he thought it was some sort of fish at first! Quote
tfisherman Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I caught a yellow eagle claw rod out of Belews Lake NC when I was a tenager Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted September 6, 2006 Super User Posted September 6, 2006 I caught two last year and one this year. Raul mentioned same panties ..... caught a pair of those this year too. All caught on DD22's Quote
