krisjack69 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I would like to know the best way to fish a trick worm weightless.I cant seem to throw the worm that far using my spinning reel since the worm is so light.I tried using nails in the nose. Quote
reo Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 What kind of rod, reel and line are you using and how long has the line been on the reeel/used? With FRESH 6 or 8 pound line with a 2500 saraha on a 7' ML rod I can throw a trick worm as far as I need to no matter how it is rigged. Even with no weight. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 5, 2009 Super User Posted February 5, 2009 How far is "that far" to you? I fish them weightless a lot and can throw them easily 40'-50' with either spinning gear or baitcasting gear. I also use a weightless finesse worm and throw them on spinning gear at least 40'. What kind of line are you using? edited: I just made a test cast with a finishing nail weighted finesse worm (just happen to have 4 rods rigged that way) and with just an effortless side arm wrist cast, it went 57 feet. I was using 30# braid. Quote
Super User CWB Posted February 5, 2009 Super User Posted February 5, 2009 I have no trouble tossing it pretty far with my 6'6" M rod and 4000 Spirex with 10lb. mono. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 You shouldn't have no probs throwing it.Like others have said it is either: a.Your line sucks or b. your rod may be a little too stiff. trickworms have salt and cast better than most similar styled worms. Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I have no problem reaching 40'-50' with a weightless Trick Worm and 3/0 EWG hook using a Shimano Sahara 2500, 8# Sufix Elite, and a 6'8" ML BPS Extreme "Woo Daves" spinning rod. The fish in my avatar was caught using that combo with an *** "Floater", which I prefer over the Trick Worm even though I can't cast them quite as far. Quote
LAO162 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I can't cast them quite as far as a 1/4 oz crank, but the difference is not so great that I spend any time thinking about it. This year floating worm is one of the techniques that I'm planning to practice. Quote
bocabasser Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 during the summer i love to swim a black trick on top through the pads. it looks like a small snake, and man does it get hammered. Quote

Great technique around here 8-) try it with a lightly weighted or weightless 10-12 inch worm once Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 Ah yes, trick worms. Great method and fun to fish. I have no problem fishign them so let me tell you what I do. Rig the trick worm with a 3/0 weedless hook so you can pull it through the grass and over the slop. Use 8 pound flouro or mono, your choice, although I use flouro, and tie the 3/0 weedless hook with a Palomar knot. Using a 2500 Shimano spinning reel and a 6' 6" medium heavy rod, I can cast the worm as far as I want. But not too far as you need to be able to set the hook when you see them suck in the worm. I like pink and white trick worms as you can see them easily. HINTS: You can use a longer rod if you want, just match up the spinning reel's specs with the rod's specs. Eagle Claw weedless hooks have a large eye so it is easy to tie your Palamor knot but their hooks rust. I use Mustad or Gamagutsu weedless hooks. So give my set up a try. Be sure to use that 8 pound test and a weedless hook, even if you go down to a 2/0. Let us know how you do. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 6, 2009 Super User Posted February 6, 2009 The best presentation for a Zoom Trick worm. Quote
reo Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Wayne Is that shrink tube?? Could you explain more about that rig?? Thanks Quote
BARON49_Northern NY Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I throw a weightless trick worm with a 3/0 Gamakatsu hook using an Avid 7' MH with a fast tip, Revo SX reel, and 30 lb Power Pro with no problem at all. Quote
cbreeze22 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I use either my 7' Avid ml/f with Shimano Symetre or my 6'8' Powell ml/xf with Symetre. I use 6# or 8# Berkley mono or Pline Fluro Clear depending on the sink rate I want. Most often I use a swivel about 18" up on the line. Get good distance on casts. Like white and bubblegum in clear water with sun. In stained water and in shade I use black/red glitter or junebug. I have done well fishing them on top but I also like to throw them and count them down and work them down under the water with a jerkbait type retrieve. On top I like to keep them moving like a snake. They have such good action Im going to try them on a shakyhead jig next time out. Also have another Symetre spool set up with 20# Power Pro braid moss green with 8# Seaquar Invz leader. Gonna use this to T rig zoom trick with lightest slip bullet weight I can get away with. 8-) Quote
