Sizemic Frustration!

Went out Saturday morning with very little luck - tried everything.  Around noon time in some pads I tried a white Sizemic frog with a 5/0 EWG Gammy - seems to fit perfectly.  Only reason I tried it was because of a post I read here about using topwaters in the middle of the day.

I must have had 7 or 8 blow ups and not a single hook up.  I suppose they could have been smaller than I thought, but several of those hits looked awful good.  I didn't try to set the hook early and waited to feel the rod load up - it never did.

Oh well, it was fun tryin - maybe next time!

I FEEL YOUR PAIN REDTAIL. THIS SPRING I PURCHASED SOME ZOOM HORNY TOADS. WHEN I TRIED THEM IN MY CANAL I MUST HAVE HAD TWENTY BLOW-UPS AND ONLY ONE HOOK-UP.

BUT AS YOU SAID, IT WAS FUN TRYING. TOP WATER STRIKES ARE EXCITING.

Redtail of couple of things I did that made my hook set ratio better.

Fish will hold on a frog much longer than other soft plastics, so don't set the hook right away, let the fish take the lure under water and set the hook when you fill his weight.

The other thing I do with the Zismic Pop'N Toad floating is to add a 1/0 trailer hook, put a piece of tubing under the hook, in that way will stay between the frog's legs and pretty much weedless.

This Summer I got more fish with that setting than with any other soft plastic.

Sometimes they blow up to scare the object, in this case the frog. Also they may have been making half hearted attempts, kind of like "slapping" the bait. I would also suggest waiting longer to set the hook. I would also suggest a screw in hook. Also, maybe try a different color or method of retrieve. Sometimes the color or retrieve needs to be changed. Don't give up on this bait, it will produce.

When the rod loads, he'll be swimming in a direction. Set the hook the opposite way. I also like the EWGs with the screw... doesn't tear the bait as much.

I have never had any luck with any of them plastic frogs. But I own every color of every company. But I will stick with the snag proof frogs.

yea for some reason i dont have much luck on the sizemic frogs but the stanley ribbits do the trick u should try them out

We're talking two different lure categories here. It's none of my business what anyone else fishes with, but if you give the buzzing frogs/toads a chance, you will find they can generate some very fast action at times when fishing fast and covering a lot of weedy water.

Try throwing the soft toads on braided line. As difficult as it is to let a fish take your bait when he blows it up, be patient. When you feel the fish's weight on your rod, LET LOOSE AND GIVE IT A RIP!!!!!!!! The braided line wont stretch at all and will allow you to set the hook with confidence.

Good idea Lubina.  I'm going to give this a try my next time on the water.
