i was wondering wat the best tactic is for really really thick weeds.i ask because i was fishing 2 day and i came across a cove with really thick weeds.i first tried pitching senkos but the weeds were so thick it would not sink so i tried a texas rig but i could notpull it along the bottom without getting weeds  caught on the worm. the last thing i tried was a jig but like the other tactics i could not retrieve it much before getting weeds caught on it.

It depends on the weeds...Are they grass or lilly pad stalks or reeds or just bottom junk?  If its grass like milfoil or hydrilla, try running a shallow crank just above the top of the weeds, or along the edges if you can.  If its lillies, make sure you use braided line and try using a t-rigged senko and make sure you bury the barb so you don't snag so much.  Also, if you're on lillies, try using a frog...

Another little tactic I've found helpful is giving the bait a couple of shakes when you feel it bogging down.  Sometimes, not always though, this will knock off quite a bit of the stuff hanging onto the lure.

Try a weightless Zoom Super-fluke. Work it on top of those weeds slowly and with an erratic motion. the bass will come out of those weeds to hammer this bait.

By now there probably isn't enough water above the weeds to swim anything. You can work a frog over it effectively, especially over coontail and elodia. Bass can charge through that stuff easier than through hydrilla or packed lily pads, so they follow a surface frog out to a pocket of open water.

I also use a very heavy grass jig, at least 3/4 - 1 oz with a compact chunk trailer with no appendages that can wrap around a plant stem. I fling it high and let it pop a hole in undisturbed matted vegetation, let it down to the bottom, the yo-yo it a moment through the hole above. Lighter baits don't fall to bottom well unless they can break through the mat into relatively open water below a mat. If you can figure out where a ditch runs through, or find a rock below it, a ridge, hole, or stump, all the better.

Come winter and possible low water I go out scouting to map features that will be covered and out of sight the following summer. I GPS boat positions then take a digital photo of a stump, hole, rock pile position in the center of a photo with enough shoreline behind to help relocate those later when all I see is weed choked water. Some spots are memorized, but not enough yet. If it wasn't for the thick weeds I could sound bottom with jigs for such things, but then the bass might not be there using them without weeds hiding them.

For the thickest of weads, I would reccomend using a topwater frog. They are one of the most wealess baits and are a blast to fish. If you get a strike but dont hook the fish,(this happens often with frogs) throw back a weigtless worm in that spot. Have fun!
