Super User Bankbeater Posted July 17, 2006 Super User Posted July 17, 2006 I don't have a problem with cold water. What I have a problem with is my you know what freezing to the boat seat. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 17, 2006 Super User Posted July 17, 2006 Cold is okay....but I'm still kind of on the fence.Fish bite better in the summer than they do in the winter but I'd rather be cold than hot...... :-? Quote
Valascus Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I HATE cold weather. Heat is just not an issue for me. I'd much sooner fish in extreme heat than cold. in fact, I am thinking about heading out one of the next few days. Heat indexes in the triple digits...ahhhh...bring it on. Bringing the old water cooler with though and setting up under my fav shady spot. 8-) Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted July 17, 2006 Super User Posted July 17, 2006 I agree that fishing in the cold weather sucks WAY more than the extreme heat .... that is on us physically and mentally. But fishing, well actually catching, is about the same if not a tad easier in the winter IMO. That is if you can find them. They will be less scattered than they will be in the summertime. Summertime they can be shallow and deep and everything in between. Winter time it's pretty easy ..... they are deep. But many of us, myself included, can't stand the cold and don't have the paitence to locate them. I could spend darn near all day trying to locate fish in the heat of the summer ...... just did it last week with temps approaching 100. Put temps in the 30's and my fishing trips are pretty short. The cold conditions are way tougher on us than it is the fishing is what I am trying to get at. If they only made baots with heaters. :-? ...... safe ones Quote
FALCON Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 FOR ME, IT'S DEFINATELY TOUGHER FISHING IN THE COLD. I'LL CHASE SMALLMOUTH THROUGH OCTOBER THEN PULL THE BOAT OUT AND WINTERIZE HER. THEN POUT UNTIL APRIL. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 18, 2006 Super User Posted July 18, 2006 I know it's too cold to stay out all day in Michigan, but here in Tennessee the best smallmouth fishing is October through February. We don't fish much in December because of the weather, it gets cold here then, too. Some days are too cold in January and February, but we can fish most days. Quote
Keithscatch Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I have caught my biggest bass ever in the cold months. Numbers are down but size is way up. Summer fishing is more for dinks and smaller fish with an occasional bigger fish thrown in. My favorite 2 months to fish by far.......DECEMBER & FEBRUARY. Give me December & FEBRUARY fishing anyday over even the spring. I have had 30+ fish days in December on Red Rattle traps. Who said they are deep in the winter? huh. Some might be but a whole heck of a bunch of Bass are shallow in grassy areas as grass holds warmth. Of course that was in texas when the water temp was in the 40's. Not exactly as cold as some of you guys. But I have also caught fish when the air temp was in the 30's too. One time I launched my boat and I have a 20'2" Skeeter with a 200HP motor on it. The twin axle trailer was frozen to the hull of my boat and actually floated in the water and I had to pull the boat up and crash it back down into the ramp 3 or 4 times quickly before it would unstrick and come off. hahah. Now that is cold. I still caught them shallow. I look for the sunny side of the lake and will toss those red rattle traps till my arms fall off. The fish I usually catch are good ones. The pic in my avatar was my biggest here in Florida so far (Still only 8lbs) but I caught her in DECEMBER on ....a Red Rattle Trap. You northern boys try throwing a red rattle trap in that cold water when it hits 40 degrees and tell me what happens. Fish it around boat docks and any grasy areas you have. Hang on though. In the picture below I just took a picture of this 35mm picture which is why it says July 18th 2006. Now that would be a cold July anywhere haha. I am clothed very heavily and even put my rain suit on to help block the cold wind. It was windy that day and cold. Temp in the upper 30's low 40's. Still caught . a few not many but they are usually 3lbs or better. Quote
senko_77 Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I am completly a cold water person. My numbers and size are way up compared to summer. I like how you feel slow and unable to move quickly. It FORCES you to slow waaayyy down. The only thing I dont like is how the bulky clothing limits your movements. I also love cold because people go in early, and alot dont catch any at all so it makes me feel good that I usually tough it out and catch them when others cant. Now I know LBH is gonna come in here and bash me because when I was up in RI with him we night fished in may and it was freezing and windy and nasty, and I am all decked out in clothes and he's in about a short and t-shirt.....good times russ O my name was susan or was it nancy after that trip. I dont remember. Also, make sure you get some good gloves in that clothing line ;D Quote
