Guest ouachitabassangler Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 I know a lot of folks hook up from various boards, and I tried my hand at it a couple of years. It might have just been an unlucky streak but every guy I teamed up with was mostly either a non-stop talker or at least one of these: noisy boat rocker/bait dropping/side of boat slapper/constant hanger upper or fisher of tree bass (like 20 feet above shoreline) ;D  IOW, totally inexperienced and not too interested in improving. One guy showed up with a couple of $15 Wal Mart special combos and stayed backlashed, decided he needed to borrow a good $200 rod, then stepped on it taking a fish off a crankbait, offering to let me have his combos  Only because I had that happen so many times guiding did I just let it go.  So lately I've been inviting local army reservists out fishing on Ouachita when they are home for R&R, and so far all of them have been really well disciplined, easy to coach about boat and team fishing etiquette, downright fun to be with. So while I think it's perfectly fine to work up a fishing trip here, ya never know what yer gittin into... :-/  So if'n you think yer not in one of those dreaded categories listed above most any of us would give it a try at least once. Then comes scheduling   My days off are Mondays and every other Tuesday or Thursday, working 4 tens 3 pm to 2 am. My po wife! I've finally learned how to come in without waking her, sleeping on a living room sofa till she gets up then go to bed for as long as possible. I'm a 62 year fisherman thsat loves night fishing, another couple of negatives for a lot of younger guys. If you see any hope in it all PM me  ;D Jim Quote
Rebbasser Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 I've fished with a couple guys I met here. Â Flyrod and I fish together about every other if not every week-not only is he a good fishin' buddy he has turned out to be a real good friend. This past wekend I fished with RottManK9-he sent me an email out of the blue and when I found he was active duty recently returned from Iraq I offered to take him out on the water-I'll let him relate the experience when he gets a chance, but suffice it to say we had an absolute blast(and he has the pictures ). Â Guess I've been real lucky . Quote
cpvenom Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 If im ever lookin for excitement, i think I will just talk to these fellow Georgia guys and see what we can cook up : Quote

If you see any hope in it all PM me ;D Jim Not this young guy!! Those are two highly respectable qualifications if you're coming on my boat! Too bad we are so far from each other. I fish with members all of the time, all ages, all levels. I really enjoy it but I never had to "guide" for a living either, it's always just to experience other fishing folk. Went out with nboucher last night and had a great outting. CPvenom- you have a great pool of guys here to approach. Quote
Top Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I don't own a boat so I have a hard time fishing with someone from here. It would be awkward for me to say... who wants to go fishing with me.. ummm I don't have a boat so we will need to use yours .... hahahah see what I mean? I have had a couple of offers here in Wisconsin to go fishing but nothing has materialized yet... but I am looking forward to it though... AL P.S. Â who wants to go fishing with me.. ummm I don't have a boat so we will need to use yours ;D Quote
Keithscatch Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Heck ya. That is one of the best things about being on a forum like this. I have made friends from forums before that I still talk with even though they live in a different state from me. If a forum doesn't give you that opportunity find another one. Quote
Guest ouachitabassangler Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 AL, I don't see a thing wrong with asking someone who has a boat to take you with them. I wouldn't hesitate. Back when I was allowed to belong to bass clubs the boaters usually got paired up with non-boaters since sometimes we mostly had non-boaters. I had two non-boaters at a time pretty often even for our local tournaments, though that makes keeping up with catches a little tough, using a divider in one of the two livewells. The only thing I asked of them was to be compatible and not be a pain. Newbies were instructed at meetings to LEARN and NEVER cast directly away from a partner until experienced at casting (we didn't appreciate hooks in the back  ), among many other rules like bringing decent gear and mostly fish their own lures. The only time I got to fish with the best fishermen in the clubs was when paired (rarely) locally, teamed for a trip, or fishing between tournaments. Most boaters remained scarce at those intervals, just wanting to fish without getting involved with breaking a new guy in. Fishing with a boater both of you know the ropes and you can jabber and cut up since that doesn't distract like it does for a new guy that needs to concentrate more. If we are regular partners I might try to foul hook his bass just to rile him up  ;D (works both ways every time) or eat the rest of his sandwich while he's working a bass in. What's he gonna do? Drop the bass and grab the sandwich? Nope. He's gonna holler. None of that happens with an inexperienced angler in my boat! I'm sure looking forward to the club scene next year. All those around here are too often on a tear against the Corps of Engineers and the state boys, so I have to stay away a little longer. Meanwhile I take on non-boaters I think are serious anglers however experienced, and there's no better way than through a club with someone else laying out strict rules. Jim Quote
Guest ouachitabassangler Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 LBH, Rhode Island is definitely a trip from here! I was not far from you in Annapolis, Maryland a few days in March while a guest of a former commander of a nuclear sub, the USS Los Angeles. I got to fish for stripers in Chesapeake Bay from a big Boston Whaler for the first time (ours are larger here) and the next day we went out in a bass boat kept in a really nice slip (a 2 million dollar mansion on the river, beautiful) up the Potomac into DC for an hour of casting. Caught a 3# largemouth right at what I think was the Jefferson Memorial. Those people sure live high. I have a cigarette lighter now from his sub. That was nice, but as far as serious fishing goes I'd rather have been fishing with you. I wasn't real comfortable around the Commander's friends. Maybe next time. I've been in DC 5 times for a total of 9 weeks on Corps business and had to stick to guides. Gets a little expensive! Jim Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 LBH, I got to fish for stripers in Chesapeake Bay from a big Boston Whaler for the first time (ours are larger here) Jim I'm going to have to assume, you were on schoolies, 1-7 lbs ish. Â Great for teaching someone fly fishing. Â 5 wt rods are perfect provided you aren't in current. Â Lots of fun and some pretty fish! How big do they get where you are? Our record is in the 70's but a 50 pounder isn't uncommon. That's one fishery that is a success story so far. When I was a kid, all I had was stories fromthe old timers about stripers. Now we can go target them specifically and be on all sizes for hours. PS-the crays were just molting. Caught a bass this morning, pulled on the antannea of the cray in throat and the shell was all but see thru, milky. No spots! Thanks for your assistance there. Quote
Keithscatch Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 it would help if this board shows where everyone lives. Many boards do but for some reason the powers that be decided against that on this one. I have clicked on numerous profiles and see that most do not post the state they are from. Oh well, rant over Moderator Note: Eveyone can put their location in their profile and it can be automatically displayed at the bottom of every post. It's optional. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 My suggestion is a link to a map. Â Click on the state and it will show all the members that "voluntarily" put their name there as a "contact to fish" or "contact for local info" Quote
nboucher Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Ouchit, I'm in the same situation you're in and second what LBH, whom I met in person for the first time last night, said about fishing together turning out to be great fun. But it's important to have a realistic view of who you are as an angler and to respect your co-angler. Discuss what equipment you will be bringing with you ahead of time. LBH is much more experienced than I, and we were out in his boat on his home lake, so I deferred to his experience and knowledge and treated him to breakfast afterward. (Okay, I did bum a cigarette off him.) Basically, if you're on someone else's boat and lake, remember you're a guest and follow that person's lead. Ask for advice, and take an interest in each other as human beings, though it's probably smart in general to avoid politics  . Also, be on time. It all comes down to common sense and basic human respect for one another. I know I learned a lot from LBH, who is an incredibly generous, gracious, and knowledgeable person. I'm sure there are thousands of other similar people on these forums, and fishing with any of them would make be a better angler and wiser man. Quote
Guest ouachitabassangler Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Russ, our Whaler group just wanted to troll big bombers, and one guy baited up down-riggers with big shad he brought. The biggest striper was about 9 pounds. 5 of us caught 11 fish from about 4-9#. We started south of Annapolis then turned out east with land barely in view to the north. I had no idea and still don't where we were. It was more of a reunion of officers that served together on the sub on the early 80s, nobody real serious about mainly fishing. I was invited along since I was a guest in Commander Beedle's home for another occasion. Our stripers get up to 55# so far and will get larger. My biggest so far here is 38# caught fishing for LMBs. Glad to hear the crayfish news. Weird looking at that time, huh? Â Jim Quote
Madhouse27 Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Open invite to anyone that is a member in good standing of Bassresource.com. If you are coming up to Maine on vacation or whatever, send me a pm and hopefully we can hook up for a day on the water. I'm on vacation the week of July 24th and will be fishing every day. Â Other than that week I'm available weekends. Come on up and have a lobster, some blueberry pie, a couple of fresh Maine micro brews and hopefully some hard fighting bronzebacks. Quote

Flyrod and I fish together about every other if not every week-not only is he a good fishin' buddy he has turned out to be a real good friend.. Isn't that the way it ought to be? Go fishin' and, low and be hold, you find a good friend. I fish alone far too often. It's nice to find people with which you can share fishing, and sometimes more importantly other things. I can name a good number of people on this site that I would be glad to fish with, if only I had the time to get the job done on my end. Unfortunatley I have to force my fishing time the way it is. If I were ever to be in anyone's area, I would be sure to let them know. I hope ya'll would do the same. Quote

what Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 i fish with a member all the time in fact hes my best friend Quote
Guest ouachitabassangler Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Tennsopher, that's good of you. I've been there many times, wife & girls going to Disney World, the guys fishing, while visiting her dearest cousin there in Orlando, their girls and mine very close friends. We did that every year until a couple back when too many folks' health fell too much to keep fishing, so the last two trips I used guides. I caught my PB of a little over 14# and now that it's happened the burning drive to go back has dropped to a flicker, the girls grown and gone to raise their own kids. We'll end up there anyway playing Rook all night, and if that happens I'll let ya know we're coming. That bass changed me down there in Florida. From then on somehow largest doesn't mean a thing now, but catching the largest expected for a given lake does matter more than it did. My PB for LMBs on Ouachita stands at over 8-8 from the 1960s, which was not hard to duplicate back then, and not many have outgunned that here since those years. Jim Quote

Tom Bass lives in N.C. Wonder how I figured that out? Oh, he posted it under his avitar. : Yep. I live in O.H. Wonder how you figured that out. Oh, I posted it in my signature. You too can also post where you live if you want to. ;D Back to the original question. As far as I am concerned it is cool, not too sure it is kosher though. :-/ (I'm not jewish) If you want to go fishing with me, just ask. I could stand to learn a thing or two. Quote
