BassKing813 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 I was just wondering, what is the weirdest way you've caught a bass? I caught a four pounder once using a bobber and a piece of bread. I've also caught one on a little two-inch crappie tube. Quote
el_jewapo Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 The weirdest one I can think of at the moment was just last week. I had just reeled in a cast and had about 3 feet of line out, I had my jig dangling over the water and had my other hand and on the trolling motor when the tip of my jig trailer barely skimmed the water and a 3 lb bass jumped up and nailed it! That was pretty cool. Quote
carySE406 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 I caught a 6 and a half pounder on a piece of hot dog. Quote
Bass Hammer Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 My favorite was after working a bait in I burned it the last 5 feet. The fish tried to hit it at the bank, missed and shot out about 3 feet. I just grabbed him. Quote
basser89 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 While I personally haven't tried it yet! A family that owns a farm pond I fish uses foot long hot dogs, wacky rigged of course! Believe it or not, the biggest bass they have caught on that rig was 28"! And that is a pond here in MD! Â Quote
Shimano-king Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 This didnt happen to me, it happened to my friend but I couldent pass up telling the story. Â My friend got his lure caught about 2 feet under water in some trees, so i went to the front of the boat to get it out, when he jerks the freakin thing!!!!!!!! Ok, now hes laughing histericaly, with the dislodged lure dangling 1 inch in the water when all of a sudden..... BAM! fish on! Â I still have no idea how that happened. ;D Quote
jomatty Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 my wife and i were recently fishing in a lake when she made one of her specialty casts that somehow went straight up and over a tree and was dangling slightly out of the water. Â as i was struggling to figure out a way to get it out a bass jumps up and takes the senko. she said that when i pulled on a branch the bait touched the top of the water and i guess it looked like something good falling out of the tree. Â now we have a fish dangling on the end of the line with only about the last 1/4 of it still in the water. Â it took some doing but i managed to get him through the leaves and drag him up and over the tree and release him unharmed (but prob very confused) matt Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted June 25, 2006 Super User Posted June 25, 2006 With a spinnerbait ;D :-? : Last year I was throwing a Bomber Square A along some docks and the front hook got tangled with my line. Â So when I reeled it in, it did the twirly thing on top of the water and I had a small bass hammer it. Â It dawned on me that this is what must have happened to whoever invented the Helicopter lure. Super User senile1 Posted June 25, 2006 Super User Posted June 25, 2006 The weirdest way I've caught a bass was in a post a few weeks ago called "All Wet On a Farm Pond" under the My Fishing Trip section. Â I had tossed a shad rap letting it sit on the surface for a few seconds. Â I saw a fish roll on it, and felt tension but the fish wasn't fighting. Â I reeled in and when the lure reached the boat there were two 18 - 19 inch bass hooked, one on the front treble and one on the back. Â They were face to face and I guess that kept them from fighting. Â I was able to boat them and release them. Quote
vtbassin Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 My brothers and I were smallmouth fishing on a river in Maine. Â One of them ties on a large yellow jitterbug. Â We were giving him a hard time about it being a largemouth bait. Â So as we were motoring across a shallow stretch he hangs this jitterbug over the side with about 3 feet of line out. Â You can guess the rest Bam! Â a 17 inch smallie slams into it and almost takes the rod out of his hand. Â ;D ;D Â Who says a motor spooks fish?? We laughed for days thinking about that fish. Â He never did get a strike while casting that jitterbug. Â I guess trolling it on a short line was the pattern. Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 Two instances come to mind, one similar to senile1 in that I was fishing a little 3" pencil popper and I felt a hit, set the hook, and started reeling in a dink. Â About 15 feet from me I felt more weight and fight all of a sudden and reeled in a nice 1 1/2 pounder on the front trebble along with the dink on the back. Far weirder, though, I was casting into some thick cover and got my worm caught over a branch. Â As I was reeling the thing back over the branch and as the bait was about 6 inches out of the water a bass jumped straight up and inhaled my worm. Â So here I was, hung up in a tree and a bass on the end of my line...too bad I couldn't figure out a way to get him in to shore...Had to cut the line...pretty freaky, though Quote
aggiebassin Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 i was at one of our farm ponds fishing for big bluegills w/ my ultra light and some 1.5" grubs. Â i had a small tap and i set the hook. Â as i got it close to the bank i saw it was a very small bass maybe 5-6" long. Â i had him about 10 ft from the bank when all of a sudden....zzzzziiiiiiinnnnnnggggg. Â the drag started screaming. Â when i got it to the bank about a 3#er had tried to eat my baby bass and i caught both of them. Â but the weirdest part of it was the big bass didn't even have a hook in it's mouth, it just wouldn't let go of the little one. Quote
gcaldwell55 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 i was fishing in colorado and it was pouring down rain, i was using a moss boss over the weeds and saw something that looked like a turtle head pokin out so i reeled my lure by the head sticking out of the weeds and bam i reeled in what i thought was a small snapper but when i got it in shore it was a 16 inch bass; i caught 2 more bass the same way that day. i have never seen anything like this in my life of bass fishing and i was awstruck by it Quote
mudcatwilly Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 I was fishing a plastic worm, felt a bite, and set the hook. Â When reeled the bass in, I noticed that the hook wasn't in its mouth. Â I had hooked him through the side of his head behind his eye. Â I have also hooked one in the tail before. Quote
volpster31 Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 me & my bro were carp fishing in february & he nailed a 4lber on corn....it was the wildest thing i ever saw...he was slowly reeling it in & he got hammered ,and said "man it feels like a bass" i told him he was nuts but when he lipped that baby up i felt like a dope Quote
phatfish Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 I was fishing with a younger cousin, and he really wanted to use marshmellows to catch a fish. Â Not to argue with a 7 year old with his mind set on something, I put a small piece of marshmellow two feet under a bobber, thinking at least he would have some fun with little sunfish. Â Well after fishing for 15 minutes, low and behold, he hooks himself a 2 pound bass. Â Which at the time felt like a marlin on a two foot donald duck pole, and at the time scared the living bejeebers out of my cousin. Â Let just say it was a funny sight. I coached him through it and he caught his first fish.... and if anyone wants to know... NO... I did not fish the rest of day with marshmellows... I have some pride... Â Â Â Quote
dink Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 Got a couple. Sunrise on tournament day. I throw out my trusty Bow Howdy to some busting fish. Blurp... blurp.... SLAM! I set the hook way early and the lure comes flying back at me and lands in the water right at the boat. When it did this, all the line that came flying back also got caught in my hat pin hook (one those gold ones). As I tried to untangle it, another fish crushes the bait pulling my hat into the lake and me reeling like mad. Fish went in the well. ;D Now this one I had never even heard of happening before. I was fishing with a buddy in a little two man boat. I was throwing a worm and he a crankbait. I got a hit and started reeling down to the fish which was swimming towards the area where my buddy was fishing his crankbait. He felt a hit and swung just as I did the same. Same fish. Worm hook in one side of his mouth and treble hook in the other side. True story. Quote
JiggaMan512 Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 My most recently wierd fishing experience happened yesterday around 3pm. Workin my FatFree Crank along some fallen trees, and get a strike. Set the hook, but the fish was kinda half way out of the water at this point and just completly suspended for atleeast 2-3 seconds. I thought, hmmm? got the lure back to the boat and i had yanked one eye out perfectly from the socket. just staring at me. i kept it and played a little joke on my girlfriend but thats a different story. bgbfflochp Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 My weirdest way of catching a bass was also with bread...go figure. Â It's also my PB (7.1 lbs). Â I was fishing off the land, and went up to a bigger sized hook when we caught 3 catfish. Â Next thing I know, that beast was on the end of my line. Â I think I was 10 or 11 years old. Â I took my picture with it, and I'm sure my parents still have it at their house. Quote
RobDar Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 S.t Joseph River...mid june...cool day for June, partly cloudy...stained water...just out playin around... There is a spot near the Six Span bridge we always stop to fish...not because we have had an enormous amount of luck there, just that when we have caught fish there they have been good fish... Wife is rolling her spinner bait slow and patient through this lay down and then out over the drop... I am throwing a 6 inch plastic worm... we get nothing... As my father in law is pulling up the trolling motor and we are rolling our baits in to move...my wife gats hammered by a smallie about 6 feet out from the boat...as she is pulling it in...another smallie comes up and strikes at the fish on her line...he holds on for a quick second and the wife, still reeling in, pulls the smaller fish away from the bigger...I toss my worm out there and damned near before it hits the water the big boy...a 4 1/2-5 # smallie nails my worm... I have never caught a bigger smallie and will likely NEVER again see one fish go after another while on line and being reeled in... was a once in a lifetime experience.... afterward we all sat there in the boat...speechless... Super User Hookemdown. Posted June 26, 2006 Super User Posted June 26, 2006 The weirdest way I almost caught a bass :  Me and a couple of my friends were fishing a small pond for bluegill (didn't even know it held bass)  well I hooked a blue and right before I picked it out of a water  a 2-3# came up and  almost snatched the blue.  This scared the crap out of me. That was also the largest panfish I have ever caught. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 The weirdest way I caught one was last summer.I was fishing a topwater early in the morning.I was using a new Quantum reel and hadn't tightened it down enough.I set the hook on a bass and my reel popped off my rod and fell in the water. It was still attached to the line so I fished it out and put it back on the rod. After tightening it down I reeled in the slack and the bass was still on.I boated a fat 2 pounder. Quote
Troutfisher Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I went down to a usual spot of mine and threw a senko-imitation into water I know was 6 inches deep or less, and a nice 2 and 1/2 lber nailed it as soon as it hit the water. My parents told me that my first fish was a brook trout caught in a small creek near my grandparents home, and I had a bobber and worm on, and literally as soon as the bait hit the water a fish nailed it and pulled the bobber under. Super User ww2farmer Posted June 27, 2006 Super User Posted June 27, 2006 Just this spring I caught 2 bass on a Rapala husky jerk at the same time, also when fishing farm ponds it's not all that uncommen for me to be reeling in a dink and have a bigger one chasing it. What was heart stopping though was about 3 years ago I was fishing out on the local park pond, had a nice 1.5 lb bass on , and a HUGE pike swipes at it taking fish, line, lure all in one bite ................all about 3 feet from me, I had to go home and change after that. Jerkbate Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 This was an almost catch so it may not count. Â This happened to my brother. Â He and I were wading the backside of a pond when he catches about a 1 pound bass. Â We were standing only a few feet from each other in about knee deep water. Â His fish ran towards me and was almost between my legs when a much larger bass (I'd guess about 6-8 pounds) nailed it at my feet. Â I thought I was going to have to clean out my pants. Â The big bass finally let go of the small one after a few seconds. Â The little fish was bleeding and looked like someone had thoroughly scaled it. Quote
