I use a homemade plug knocker that costs about $0.00.  Heard about the idea in a magazine and it works great.  Just pickup a bunch of used sparkplugs at a local car repair garage (they won't charge you, they just throw 'em away).  Take the ground wire (L-shaped thingy on the sparking end) of the plug and run it through the eyelet on a snap-swivel, then bend the ground wire down so it doesn't come off.  Presto...plug knocker.

Next time your crank gets snagged, just unsnap the swivel, put it on your line, snap it back, and let 'er glide down the line.  Keep your line kinda taunt and when the plug reaches the lure, just lower and raise your rod tip a few times to knock it loose.  If you can't get it loose, who cares...it's just a greasy spark plug and you got 4 more in your bag.... ;)

bluecraw, that's what I call good old American ingenuity

In the future, anyone looking at my inflatable raft and electric trolling motor will wonder why I'm carrying a set of spark plugs.

Ok I'll admit it  ;D I loose a freaking ton of lures. If I cast to a spot and I know there is a fish there or the potential for a bite and I get hung I will snap a lure off in a heart beat before I go in and run off the fish. I also throw places that most would throw a spinnerbait. That is the main reason why I don't crank with braid. If I am not fishing for money yeah I pull out my plug knocker and go get it otherwise it is donated to the cause. If it is a pet lure I get it regardless  :;) CS 4x4 is a wonderful thing.

I usually only lose a crankbait or jerkbait when fishing from shore.  I can't walk on water to get it out of a tree ;D  I bought the BPS lure retreiver and have gotten all of my crankbaits and jigs back while fishing from a boat.  I will not hesitate to break off a plastic bait because I usually have plenty more in the boat.

My problem with losing lures is not snagging, well not usually.  My biggest problem is that I have a backlash deep in the spool and when i fling that crank or sprinnerbait, the line stops but the lure keeps going.  Not so bad with a crankbait, but it's my number one way to lose rattletraps.

thank God their cheap.

I lose a TON of lures. I need to make a BPS run and stock back up. I never lose topwater (for obvious reasons). Everything else though...boy...I lose a ton. I do all of fishing from the bank, most of the spots I fish have a lot of laydowns with a ton of off-shooting branches, a buncha old fishing line usually weaved through them in any conceivable way from previous fisherman losing stuff, and a lot of heavy rock and grass (in the spring, summer, and fall) in the area. All that cover doesn't deter me one bit from throwing whatever I want. I lose a buncha cranks, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, jigs, etc. etc. I have tried plug knockers, but they don't work so well from the bank...especially through cover. I usually lose the lures to deep for a telescoping lure retriever to work. If I am losing lures, I just usually chalk it up as a donation to the Fishing Gods. My wife gets more angry about me losing them than I do. She just can't stand the fact that I spend $3-$14 on a lure only to possibly lose it and have to go replace it. She HATES that. I just tell her: Can't catch 'em if ya ain't willing to throw into the nasty stuff...she hates that too. :;)

I'll lose a couple a season on snags and such. The worst was two years ago when my buddy knocked my open tacklebox into the spillway. Really my fault for setting up there but i still didnt talk to him for a couple weeks.

I don't lose many but I did happen to lose an orginal Wiggle wart last season.  Those things are too precious to not have a lure retriever along. I'm gonna have to get one this year.

I next to never lose one. Now if I let some one else use one of mine its like a death sentance for thar lure....... last year alone my brother lost 2 $5 spinner baits 4 roster tails and a million sinkos in 4 trips.

Then I hooked him up with a cheapo spinner bait hasent lost it yet. Still tied in his pole from last year

I loose quite a few hooks, weights and jigs.  Don't loose many spinnerbaits, but I will hang one occasionally. I probably loose a couple dozen cranks every year. I'm a firm believer in banging cranks off of something. You're gonne loose a few, but you are also gonna catch more fish. I consider it the price of doing business.

Cheers,

GK

I tend to lose one about every other trip.  I think I have purchased about 10 Silver Rapala DT 6's last year.  On a good note I only lost 2 Lucky Craft lures last year.  I don't know why, but I tend to snag less LC's than anything else.  Maybe something in the back of my mind is saying, "Are you crazy, that's a $15 lure you're fishing with!!! Pay attention to what you're doing!"

In the 2 1/2 years I have been throwing the Hud, I have lost 1..... and that was not to a snag, but rather, I got all loaded up for a long cast, let er' rip, and the stinking line got around my reel handle, and I sent it sailing ! Doh ! Granted, that ol' Hud was so shredded, it was probably more super glue than soft plastic. Sure, it probably needed to be "buried at sea" anyway....... But I had stuck several double digit bass on it, and it was kind of a sentimental thing :-(

With my Basstrix Bluegills, I hardly ever lose them, but I do have a lot of them shredded by bass teeth, or I jack up the jig hook on rocks. If the Bluegill is still in fairly good shape, I'll reglue it to a new jig head. Once in a while I might find a bed with a big log across it, and lose 3 or 4 Bluegills to it, while trying to get big momma' to go..... but when the game is all over (whether or not I stuck her), I will sometimes be able to go get my Bluegills back.

Peace,

Fish

i used to lose quite a few crankbaits.  then i bought one of these - http://www.mygogetit.com/pages/seeit.htm

it is absolutely the best retriever i have ever used   ,,shafts slide out easily, quickly, & it works Great.

two trips ago, however, i did tie on my favorite buzzbait, trimmed the tag end (i thought) & threw my buzzbait into the water & watched it fall into the deep dark lake!

Before I started fishing only plastics from the bank, I lost about one crankbait a trip.  The most I ever lost was 6 crankbaits in one trip.
