CJ Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 I know there have been alot of threads about scents in the past.I had an on the water experience recently and thought I would share it and see if I could get some of you to give your input on the scernario. Me and my partner were fishing ledges on our home lake.We both ended up throwing a 10" worm.I was throwing an Luck "E" Strike Original Ringer in plum,he was throwing a Berkley Powerbait 10" Power Worm in blue fleck. The differences between the two are slight except for scent. The Original Ringer is a little bit smaller in diameter and has ribs on the body. The plum color is a shade lighter and a little brighter. The main difference is the Powerbait worms just plain stink. Both of our presentations are similiar for we have fished together for a long time but,HE HANDED ME THE BUTT WHUPPIN' OF MY LIFE!It seemed like every other cast he was hooked up.I was just pickin' up a dink here and there but not much. I know we all get smoked every once in a while, but I ain't been beat like this ever.BTW,we were using the same line.I was in the back of the boat but,we weren't flippin' bushes,we were fishing deep structure. So,what do ya'll think? Was it the scent of the worm? Was it the color or slight size difference? Was it that the fishing gods were blessing him for his loyalty to the BM?Any other thoughts? CJ Quote
Guest Feel_The_Steel Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 I have heard a few stories like yours. I am a firm believer in scent!! How often does smell trigger a huger response from us?? I think that it does the same for fish, or if anything will make them hold onto the bait a second or two longer. Quote
russ0101 Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 one thing you mentioned - he was in the front of the boat and you were in the back... were you follow up fishing behind him?? if so, he was getting to them before you were i used the gulp scented things, and the powerbait worms, but i dont use scent much - all i ever catch on that is catfish Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 14, 2006 Super User Posted June 14, 2006 Maybe. I have been testing scents for a couple of years without discovering any particular pattern. I am currently using the GYCB MegaStrike which has a consistancy of vasoline and comes in a convient tube. I do like the way it feels, it makes soft plastics slimy. As to the scent, well...I seem to do just as well with or without this or any other product, and believe me I have tried a lot and still have some of most of them. Does it really help? I don't know, but I'm not buying any more and when this stuff runs out my experiment is over. I won't be using scents in the future unless something changes dramatically. Note: Nearly all soft plastics these days are some formula which includes salt and scent. So, to some extent salt and scent are probably helpful, but additional scent on top of that...I don't think so. Quote
CJ Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 I was in the back of the boat and I was throwing in behind him but, when you are fishing deep structure the guy in the back of the boat is going to hit stumps, brush, ect. that the guy in the front missed.Could it be that the scent of the worm opened up their strike zone? DR_Bass Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 I think that scent can help alot at times, I believe that the scent was directing the fish to his bait alittle better. I've had days were I was sight fishing and I could get a cruising fish to turn around alot better with a scented bait than I could with a unscented one. Quote
volpster31 Posted June 14, 2006 Posted June 14, 2006 i always feel confident throwing any berkely soft plastic...im a true beleiver that they dont let go once biting it...but i must say, just being that confident in a lure helps too................ Quote

If I had to guess, I'd say it was because his lure past the nose of more bass in a positive mood. Is that luck or is that lure placement? Great question, by the way. Roger Quote
Nick_Barr Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 I am a firm believer that scent covers up your scent, makes the fish hold on longer, and if its a Colored Scent I can dye my tails for about 30 casts. I am not sure if it helps your catch rate. But it does give a little something extra to the fish which I like. I LOVE MIKE"S LUNKER LOTION BASS SCENT Quote
Super User senile1 Posted June 15, 2006 Super User Posted June 15, 2006 CJBasswacker, When you saw he was catching all of the fish, you should have switched to the same worm he was using. If he was still catching more fish than you after that, then you could attribute it to lure placement, being in the back of the boat, etc. If you started catching fish like he was, after switching to the same worm, then you would know that there was something about the Berkley Powerbait worm that the fish liked better. CJ Posted June 15, 2006 Author Posted June 15, 2006 I agree that I should have gotten a worm from him but,I was being stubborn and in disbelief that it was the worm.I have alot of confidence in the worm I was throwing.BTW,I just paid him back a little. The bite was a different story this afternoon. He was throwing his worm with no production.I started with a jig and had no bites either.I switched up to a 6" finesse worm and started catching them by lifting it high off the bottom. The fish were suspended and in a negative-nuetral mood.Like me,he was to stubborn to switch to a different worm and I handed him his butt. P.S.We really don't fish against each other. We fish togather. In the future I will swallow my pride to help draw conclusions. Thanks for the input guys. CJ Quote
Chris Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Color, scent, size, location, first to hit the spot, all play a part. MOOD played the biggest part. If the guy in the front is throwing a 10" worm and if you throw something different in size or shape you will pick up the fish that rejected his 10" worm. First crack at a spot will most of the time pick off the largest fish in a spot. That is not to say that there might be a twin living there also that rejected his worm and might bite yours because it wants something smaller because of it's mood. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted June 16, 2006 Super User Posted June 16, 2006 CJ, wish I could've chimed in sooner but the Power Bait scent is hands down my favorite and has been for a while. The fish rarely spit out a PowerBait plastic and I rarely throw anything BUT Power Bait plastics as far as worms and creatures go. As a matter of fact,if I do buy a different brand of worms for some reason,I will take them from their original bag and put them in a Power Bait bag with other worms of similar color so they pick up that special Power Bait scent.I wish Berkley would put out the scent in a bottle of gel or something.......I would probably soak every lure I own in it then, cranks and all. ;D Berkley does put out a gel already that claims to be the Power Bait scent but it's not the same as the scent that comes on their bagged plastics......it aint even close. I hope you and your buddy didnt have money riding on your last trip because he had a huge advantage.Power Bait ROCKS! Believe it. Quote
