larryrr Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I see the pros fishing and casting..and i was wondering what is a long cast (20...30...50..60...yds) I guess what is a long cast for a baitcastreel with hardbait ..soft ..jigs ect.. Same with open face..Now i know it sounds like a dummy..but i still would like to know Quote
KYbass1276 Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I might be wrong there are times when you need to back off and make longer casts when fish are spooked but really I would worry about where your casting more than how far If the fish arent' there then it dosen't matter how far you cast. Someone here will probally have a better answer for you just my thoughts Quote
Wildbillb Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I dont really worry about the distance of the cast. I let the fish tell me if the water is clear enough that i can see them. If I see them spookin then I will back off. I never cast past 20-25 yards. The farther out the bait is from you the more difficult the hooksets become. Quote

northgabassfisher Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I just went out in to my yard. I tied on a zara spook it is 1.5oz i think. I casted it with a cu200dhsv with a 6'6 allstar light moderat fast aciton rod and it casted 164 ft Quote
KenDammit28 Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I'd say the normal person could sling a lure(weighted right) 150-200ft, but that is really not necessary unless you're bank fishing or fishing in the middle of the lake for smallmouth or something like that(other than the usual..spooky fish so on and so on)...but even then you probably won't be that far away. Wildbillb Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 here is another way to look at it. If I tie a rope around your wrist and stand 10 yards away and give it a good yank it will hurt. Now if I do the same and stand 30 yards away I wont be able to keep all the slack out of the rope (the rope will bow) so when I yank on it again it wont hurt as much. I hope that makes sense. Quote
russ0101 Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 just the other night i took all my baitcasting reels out and put a 1/8oz bullet weight, with a 7.5" plastic worm on a 2/0 EWG hook 12# fluorocarbon - 40yds 30# braid - 60 yds 15# fluorocarbon - 40yds 20# BigGame - 30 yds Most of the time i fish murky water, and i cast around 20-30 yds. I only make the 40-60 yard casts when im out in open water and fishing in depths of 20'... that allows me to get out far and then sink to a good depth without the lure falling right back under my boat on the sink as far as spinning... about 30yds on 14#braid with the same lure... i just bout a few spinning reels, but i still haven't got used to it yet. it drives me crazy that i cant pick up the slack very fast so i dont really use them (even though i should for more finesse, but i have just about got that mastered with the baitcaster) Quote
mudcatwilly Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 How far you are actually able to cast depends on rod, reel, line, weight of lure, and strength/technique of the angler. This is irrelavent though because if you are trying to heave a lure 200 feet, you are not in the proper position to begin with. 50 to 75 feet is the most you should ever have to throw a lure. Most of the time, my casts are 30 feet or less. If the fish are spooky, I'll get out a little farther, but remember, the more line you have out, the less you are going to feel the bite. Just to be macho though, I can toss a 1/2 oz rattle trap about 150 feet on a stiff rod Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 12, 2006 Super User Posted June 12, 2006 An "average" cast is around 25 yards (75'). Quote
