I have a bad habit of laying my rod down in all the wrong places when switching to another rod........

I guess its not just rods. I don't run a very tight ship.

I've stepped on many good rods while tripping over a misplaced coffee cup or tackle box!

Being an EX Navy man.... I should be ashamed.

When i get snagged i forget to drop the bail so my lure just gets more snagged in that big ole tree trunk when i try to get it out.

Well here is my list,

Buy to much stuff and never use it, I get hung up on my color choices, sometimes I switch lures to often. Thats what I come up with for now. They are probably the worst ones.

Double hooksets.

I can't count all the times I have landed a big fish that was just barely hooked in the very last layer of cells on it's mouth. It is hard to believe that these fish couldn't pull that last millimeter of flesh free and be gone. This is the primary reason that I don't believe in an extra hookset. The chances of pulling out are far greater than the probability that you will have a better hook-up.

My worst habit is probably my love of shallow water fishing:topwaters;spinnerbaits;pitching/flipping tubes, jigs, and creature baits;working over grass beds with all manner of lures.I know I should work on the deep water part of my game more, but I'm a shallow water angler by nature. Also,I love fishing fast reaction type baits.I need to slow down a notch.

My biggest bad habit is fishing too fast. I especially get into this after catching one and find myself moving the bait too fast on the next several casts. Could it be adrenalin?

Same here.

Welcome to the forum. :)

For a little encouragement to slow down, read today's (6/28) post by Roadwarrior in the "My fishing Trip" section.

Thanks K_Mac.  Tired of lurking.

I guess the lesson here is that we need to take up a bad habit like smoking to distract us just long enough.   ;)

i fish at a high pace, but i wouldnt call it fast, then id just never catch a fish.

but my true handicap is sticking to my confidence lures, ive caught fish with  them before, and hope they do it again.  id like to try some other lures, but just afraid they might not entice those few and far between fish im targeting.

probably losing concentration and patience when the fishing is slow.  just stinks when you feel like you need a miracle from above to get a bite and you kind of abandon all your techniques.

Lighting cigarettes with the lure already in the water.

This is a fault of mine though I am much better than I once was.  The lakes I fished as a child did not exceed a depth of 11 - 15 feet and the average depth of these lakes was 7 or 8 feet, so I was conditioned to fish fairly shallow.

Occasionally, I will forget to flip my bail when I'm casting my spinning outfits.   :-?

Cussing up a storm when one gets away.

My worst habit while fishing? Not thinking enough about planning the crime of the century or picking the winning lottery numbers or the invention that changes mankind so I will be wealthy enough to quit work so I can fish more!

I think I'm too new to bass fishing to have made may bad habits. I am looking forward to finding out what I've got!

Tho, from my brief stints along the bank.  I do see that a great many fishermen have a litterbug problem. :'(

I think another bad habbit I have is getting too competetive, with myself, friends, or during tournies. Sometimes I get too anxious for a bite, might be missing a good'n because I get anxious to move to a better spot. I need to learn to relax and just enjoy the fishing more, even if it is a tourny situation. Know-what-I-mean?

Oh, and welcome rodpilot :)    Gotta hate those damned litterbugs *shakes fist*

Welcome to the forums. I agree, there is too much trash at our lakes.

Over-analyzing the situation is my Achilles' heel without a doubt. I have found myself trying to compare color differences of baitfish in one end of my lake with baitfish from the other end. Doesn't sound too bad... except the lake is under 300 acres without much difference in water quality. This bad habit also causes me to try to pattern the fish prematurely which causes the blinders to go on. At least I am now aware of this and have been just "goin' fishin" more this year. The only other bad habit I have is thousands of tag-end pieces of line litter my front deck constantly.
