I am curious to know any of the creative ways you guys have, let's say, been able to acquire necessities to the art of fishing without  you know who finding out......  given the elctronic world we live in today, I find it more difficult to "hide" a transaction.  Don't get me wrong, I have never hidden any purchases from my wife.  She has allowed me to buy all the rods, reels etc, and a brand new boat this year.  However, I feel somewhat guilty in  telling her that I need a nice new BC reel.  I don't want to psuh the limit, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I am open to new ideas......Not that I would do any of these!!!!!!!! ;) ;)

This is a question that comes up fairly frequently. A few years ago, on another forum, a guy answered by saying the questioner should check the wife's closet, count the number of pairs of shoes, and that's how many reels he can own.  ;D

CASH is your friend!!!!  That is if you have it.......plus no "paper trail" if you know what I mean!?!?!  ;)  I would also bring up the shoe thing...you know she doesn't "need" that many shoes.....she can only wear two at a time....right?  HAHAHAHAHA   ;D

First time I entered into a local tourney on the lake a buddy and I actually won the "biggest fish contest".. It was a modest $100 winnings a piece, but it did wonders for my "better half"'s perception of me going fishing. Truly it opened plenty of doors that I never realized before.

First and foremost, when she realized it was somewhat profitable and other tournaments could possibly yield more results, my fishing time was greatly increased heheheh... Even when there wasn't a tourney.. I had to "practice".. Of course she didnt' realize all the possibilities without some coaxing and umm, shall we say excuses?

Anyway, I see this is as a great way for you to use your own "cash" to justify buying new toys. Think of the possibilities, fabricate the tourney situation if you must, then use your "winnings" to buy what you need if she should ask.  The possibilities are of course....endless..... just don't get caught...phew don't get caught...

cash, baby.  but really if i want somethng i just tell my wife about it.  it then gives me time t really figure out if its a dire nessisity or not.  were open like that, and its awesome, trust is awefully hard to win back after its lost!

What I would suggest is PayPal I know that you would need to setup paypal on a checking or on a CC but if you can setup something thats yours then she will never know.

I bought a reel the other day and my wife asked me where I got it.  Just when I thought I was busted I told her that a friend that I work with just bought it and it wasn't working like it should so I offered to "clean" it up for him.  LOL ;)

If you don't use cash, you might try a slow steady diet of a few items... kind of get her used to always seeing a couple bags of worms or hooks or whatever, showing up. In no time it becomes like anything on the weekly grocery run and she'll become immune to it. And when she does, it's nothing to add a few more items. This theory covers about 75% of my regular needs... ;)

This does one of two things... saves your cash for the occasional "big" purchase or opens the door for you to ask/tell about an occasional big purchase.

Like Kana said, trust is hard to gain, once it is lost.

I would play it cool since you just bought a boat... However, since you just bought a boat I have had occasions where there are charges not "itemized" on the tune up bill. Of course this only works if the dealer you use sells tackle.

I think the biggest problem is that WE get immune to how much we get away with and then try to figure a way to do more. I learned this while recovering from rotator cuff surgury and not being in my "normal" routine. ...lol I was pretty good! Now I'm having to sort of re-train her.  ...lol

I usually get around this by having my own "fun money" account.  Every paycheck I get a "small" amount goes into my account that I can use for whatever I feel like.  We have a joint account that the bulk of our checks goes into for paying bills, groceries, etc.  By the way my wife also has a fun money account, this way we can buy what we want without having to worry about what the other thinks of the purchase.

The problem is not purchasing the stuff, she never knows, my CCs are adressed to my clinic, the goods arrive to the clinic. Where I have to get creative is figuring out how to smuggle them in.

Here 's one, my wife goes to sleep around 10-10:30 and she just dies, but I have to wait a couple of hours before I can be truely sure she 's dead asleep, then it 's time to do the comanche stealth attack.

Another one, after purchasing a bunch of goodies and them being delivered to my door the next day I bring a tacklebag, she looks at me like trying to figure out what 's going on....."I 'm going to clean a couple of reels and do some hook sharpening" so when I get back home she doesn 't know there are a bunch of illegal aliens inside.

Another way is also after a fishing trip, after the trip is over I come to the clinic before going home, pick up my stuff and she doesn 't figure it out, she doesn 't know if I went fishing with 3 rods so 4 doesn 't make a difference.

Those are some of the ways I smuggle in tackle.

I also have a "mad money" account for extra stuff. It works great! No feeling guilty about buying countless bags of worms or new rods. I think the important thing is to keep the trust. As someone once said, "where there's no trust, there's no love".

My grandfather has a different approach that he has always used. He pays cash for everything and then puts the item in "hiding" for a bit. Then when he does get it out and is interrogated, he says truthfully "oh, I've had that thing for a while". Once he didn't want to wait to play with one of his new video editing gadgets, so he actually scratched it and spray painted it like one of his old ones to confuse granny. He brags about that and other creative tactics, but what's funny is that Grandma knows he does it and just plays right along with him laughing behind his back. Good woman, they sure don't make em like that anymore!

BTW, If you guys don't think that your wives also smuggle stuff in, WAKE UP, lol.

Mine has a fascination with QVC. She tried having her stuff shipped to her mothers address. Well, found more than 1 package stashed in her trunk. I let it go for awhile till she corned me on a purchase then I sprung it on her that I know she's a QVC junkie.

No problems anymore, she's got her secret, I've got mine ;)

This is what my wife and I do also.  It works really well.

The truth has worked for you all year, why stop now!

Yeah, you're right.  I will have to continue being a "good boy".  But it is funny and interesting to read the responses and some very good ideas.
