I use 20# stren superbraid on my worm rod. I religiously keep my thumb on the braid to feel the slightest "tap".  When I feel the fish, I reel down ... causing slack... and set the hook.  This causes a whipping motion - that I find the most effective and have the most confidence in.  Yesterday (and it has happened before), when I set the hook... I sliced my thumb.  The braid cut right threw my thumb and though I would have to get stitches.  :-/ Guess I'll start throwin' some duck tape round my thumb... should have done it earlier from past experiences.   Just wonderin' if this has happened to anyone else??

Not exactly.  So far my worse braid injury is a sliced index finger from pulling line to get the knot tight.  It's one of those permanant injuries.  It starts healing so I forget about the pain, then do it again.

I may not be as smart as I look  ;D

I'm in the same boat as you... just re-re-re-sliced it

Not exactly, but I have had a simmilar injury to Avid's.  Sometimes when I have the thumb bar pressed down and the spool is free, I will get a bite and set the hook with thumb pressure on the spool before locking the crank.  I have gotten small cuts where the line comes off of the spool and the tension of the line breaks the skin.  Usually an injury I don't mind because a landed fish is involved.

I was flipping a Beaver on 50 lb braid and a 7'6" heavy action rod into thick vegetation recently and got a bite almost as soon as the bait hit the water.  I reared back and gave it the old "cross his eyes" and realized I still had the line in my left hand.  OUCH!  I cut my index finger almost to the bone.  I did land the fish though ;)

I use my pointer finger to feel the line, and have done it plenty of times. It hurts like nothing else, in fact I still got a little cut that's healing. Like Avid, I also got cuts from pulling the line tight. My best advice is to put a little superglue on the wound, works great! That is after you land the fish.

I usually get mine when I'm pulling extra line from the spool, if the drag is set too tight, and my hand slips, I normally get sliced on the second joint of my right index finger.....I've done this more times than I can count, you'd think by now it would be scarred over enough to be impermiable, or maybe I would just learn my lesson.

:o   Old Timers used to put a leather flap around the post behind the spool (i.e., behind the direction the reel spools out) so the caster can press down on the line by pushing down on the leather flap.  I don't have a reel handy, so I don't know if it can still be done.

Any good fish is worth being maimed for.  I broke a rib once when I had a choice between falling across the boat's front rail or losing a 6 pound flounder.  I deliberately took the hit.  I mean, Lordy, 6 pounds of monster tasty flounder.  Shoot, a girl broke my ribs once before that.  Gotta keep your priorities straight, especially in a moment of crisis.

I learned about braid slicing back in the 70's when I got hung-up, I thought. I knew there was no wood below my bait, just mud and weeds, so I figured a gentle tug would free it. I wrapped the line around my hand and began pulling. When the line took off with a 40# cat on the lure the line sliced the skin web between thumb and finger about an inch deep. I got that cat in the boat, then went home to park boat and put the fish in a tub of water, then to a clinic for repairs. I wrap a piece of wood now before trying that, but I've had a big fish cause the wood to spin, burning my palm. I'm prepared to turn it loose rather than fight it. So far I haven't had a significant injury from what ya'll report.
