airborne_angler Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 I have some difficulty throwing a Carolina rig. The leader being 18-24 inches in length just causes the bait to go off target and I can never get it very far. Its frustrating cause I know how deadlty this rig is and wanna use it but seem to get frustrated and give up. Are there any tips or pointers on casting someone can give to help me become a successful Carolina rig fisherman? Quote
Super User cart7t Posted May 14, 2006 Super User Posted May 14, 2006 Describe your rig you're using to fish it with and how are you trying to cast? Carolina rig casting requires a sort of side-arm lob cast on a minimum 6 1/2 MH rod, a 7 footer is better. I've used shorter rods but it's more difficult. Also, it's not the kind of fishing where you're talking about casting accuracy. Quote
Tom Bass Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Another thing. Are you casting with main weight of the bait up near the rod tip? Try letting the line out to where the weight is about half the length of the pole and casting it that way. It may help. Quote
VaBass80 Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 I pretend the plastic bait doesn't exist and concentrate solely on the weight. Quote

Much of your casting is probably done with a lot of wrist action, but not a C-rig. A long rod and heavy weight are the standard. I use a 7' heavy rod and a 1 oz. weight most of the time. I would use a little longer rod if I had one suitable. Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to throw it a long way. Hang in there. It is a very good technique. Good luck. Quote
