blanked Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 what time of year do you find marinas productive? what kind of structure do you look for? are boats that are tied off to metal docks with no cover and look to be rarely moved offer good spots?? how about the end of the ramp that is being used quite often, do you find fish there?? what else Quote
Nick_Barr Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Fishing the very end of a luanch ramp can be very productive at times, Excellent during dawn and dusk. Also Fish may be suspend under boats, most of the time I find them in the Jointed post where the dock is creating a 90 degree angle. Quote
northgabassfisher Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I love fishing docks I went yesterday a cought 7 just fishing docks it seems the bigger bass dont hang out under docks as much but yesterday I did catch a 4.5lbs spot in the very back of a dock so some big ones will hang out there. Quote
Shad_Master Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Another thing to think about when fishing marinas is if there are tournaments on the lake that release their fish at the marina. A lot of them will head back to their home gournds, but a lot will also stay in that area. That is why some tournaments post the marina as off limits. Marinas can be awsome fish holding spots especially if there is a cove close by. It is surprising how little these critters seem to be bothered by the launch traffic. Quote
KS_Bassin Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Fishing docks can be great way to catch bass some people will drown christmas trees and other items to create cover for fish under their dock it seems the docks with rod holders attached have more cover around them. Also during the summer months when it's hot out try fishing around docks the shade it creates can attract fish because of the cooler water during the hot months. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Like Nick,I like to fish the end of the launch ramp. When the big boats power up on the trailer this supposedly creates a drop off over time.I've caught some pretty good bass there, around the docks, and on a small flat just off to the right of the ramp at my home lake. Muddpuppy Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I often fish a marina when heading out and most of the year, I see alot more that try it comeing back since they are in a rush to get to their favorite spot in the mornings. I've landed some nice fish in some of the larger marinas around here. We went out one night last summer and things were slow, so we gave up and headed back in. Comeing back into the cove where we launched there are some boat houses for guests that were empty but you could see fish in them hitting on the top. I think we pulled 3 out of there before loading the boat. Quote
Will Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 When fishing docks there are some things to look for. 1) Wood, anytime you can find a wood dock it will hold more algae and attract more fish 2) Posts holding the docks up, instead of just barrels and styrofoam 3) Rod Holders, if there are rod holders on the dock usually there is a brush pile below them 4) Fishing lanterns, also a sign there could be brush piles Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Out here on lake michigan, there is a big marina near me that has close to 50 docks, maybe 100. I am going to see if they let me fish there this year. Im not sure if theyll let me. Quote
paparock Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I have my pontoon in Lakeview Marina here on Lake Bull Shoals. As far as I have been able to find out they are the only marina that will let you fish around the dock area and then only in your boat slip. Quote
goldenmonkey Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I do alot of marina and private pier fishing. mainly t-rigged brushhogs and jigs. I just fish every pole. wooden ladders seem like they always hold fish. Quote
senko_77 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 when i was playin travel hockey, and we would have tournaments next to lanier, me and my best freind and his dad would go to bald ridge marina at night after the games at lake lanier, and there were tons and tons of docks. we always would catch spots, as many dinks as keepers, so yes, marinas are worth fishing. most of the fish we caught were on the deeper sides of the docks, and docks that had the huge boats in them, because you know there is deeper water there Quote
Super User cart7t Posted April 11, 2006 Super User Posted April 11, 2006 I don't usually mess with large marina's till the fall of the year when the bass are ambushing schools of shad back in the coves. That's when I pull out a prop type topwater, Zara Spook or Lunker lure and work the dock ends. The bass position themselves along the dock ends a wait for schools of shad to go cruising by and then lower the boom on them. Quote
basscat73 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I love fishing docks I went yesterday a cought 7 just fishing docks it seems the bigger bass dont hang out under docks as much but yesterday I did catch a 4.5lbs spot in the very back of a dock so some big ones will hang out there. Dock fishing is a blast! You're right though, you'll find a lot of smaller fish under there. But! Sometimes, there's a real nice fish underneath the dock and he's not going to attack a smaller bait. He's waiting for the bigger meal! Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted April 11, 2006 Super User Posted April 11, 2006 Blanked, Docks and marinas can produce anytime of the year if conditions are right. Fish use docks to stage on to spawn. Fish have shade all day when temps rise. People clean fish at marinas. Docks and ramps usually have growth on them, plankton attracts baitfish. People often throw excess bait they didn't use into the water when done. Night lights provide insects on the water at night which attracts fish. Bass have to be used to boats coming and going. I like a marina with sail boats also, shows depth, and the draft is deeper on the keel and offers more to throw at, plus most large sail boats have massive growths underneath and deep. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 My buddy and I rarely leave the marina. The fish seem less pressured, are less easily spooked, and are generally larger than the ones caught on the main lake. Granted our Marina is like a harbor. It's tucked away from the main lake. Once you locate the bottem structure around the marina, many times it will be some of the hottest fishing in the lake.....plus you save gas. Just last saturday we never fired up the outboard and caught 17.5lbs of bass (11fish) in a few hours and didn't burn an ounce of gas. Can't really argue with results. Quote
