blanked Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 in general how much time do you spend fishing power lures to finesse lures? do many of you find that using power lures for searching doesnt work and then use finesse lures regardless?? Quote
huskertko Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I find myself using power fishing techniques a lot more than I should be, even when the conditions dictate a more finesse approach, maybe this is why I suck at finesse fishing :'(. I am in a catch 22, I am not good at finesse fishing so I don't do it, but I am not going to get any better unless I do it more. This year I am only going to really try and focus on my weaknesses even if it means leaving all my power fishing equipment at home. Quote
bassfishinmover Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 i prefer to power fish, though i readily switch to a light spinning outfit and throw a slider worm, senko, or finesse jig when conditions call for it. Quote
phisher_d Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 70 percent power fishing, 30 percent finesse fishing Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I consider myself a power fisherman, but I gotta admit that I really love a splitshot rig. It's my ace in the hole.I like using a 3x watermelonseed lizard on it.It's saved me from getting skunked more than a few times. Quote
Guest avid Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Good post. I never really thought about it unitll now. I probably spend 2/3 time finesse fishing 1/3 power fishing. I like both styles but I fish an area pretty completely. So I may run a crankbait through it a couple of times, but then use the soft plastic. I pitch jigs alot. Is that power or finesse? Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 About 90% finesse. i dont really try to, its just what im more comfortable with. I dont have a lot of confidence in cranks, but i do manage some on topwaters, spinnerbaits, and whatnot. But when i do fish these fast reaction power type baits, i usually do it slower that most. I never go hardcore finesse with 5 minute retrieves, i probably fish most finesse baits faster than other people. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 8, 2006 Super User Posted April 8, 2006 I'm a cherry-picker Though I try to remain flexible and adjust to seasonal and daily conditions, I find myself finesse fishing the overwhelming majority of time. In the same vein, my confidence is much stronger using a rifle approach rather than a shotgun approach. Roger Quote
Captain Cali Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 I usually start with some sort of search bait unless I know the fish are snapping on a certain bait. I find that a lot of times, I'll be fishing a search bait for nada only to switch to a finesse bait and get bit right away. It all depends on the day. Quote
clipper Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I will usually start out power fishing, especially if there is some ripple on the water. If I don't get bit fairly soon I will break out my slider rod and start finesse fishing because I can usually catch a fish on a slider worm. I probably don't stay with the power fishing long enough, and I am making an effort to discipline myself to do more of it. I will switch back and forth during the day to make sure I'm not missing an active bite. Quote
CJ Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I fish whatever the conditions+fish activity, tells me to.I worked hard the last couple of years on finesse fishing and it has paid off.I almost always start out on the power side unless the weather is screaming finesse. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 9, 2006 Super User Posted April 9, 2006 i fish finesse as a last resort.usually you will get bigger fish on power techniques.but when you're not getting bites finesse can definately save the day. Quote
Lunkers0 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I would probaby guess that I fish 75% finesse and 25% power. I caught most of my keepers using the finesse baits last year in my club tournaments. Quote
Kana Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 i grew up power fishing, so naturally i resort to it about 80% of the time, being in japan, the pressure is so intense most people fish finesse, call me the odd man out, but i get my share of fish just plowing through the water. sometimes there is just that time that says finesse only, so my first step is to down size my power lures, and fish a little slower. if that doesnt seem to get it going, then i go to finesse plastics. but i have to be honest the water here is so poo-caca that even finesse rigs need some type of addittional attractant to be effective,, water is just flat out nasty in most places! bassfishinmover Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 avid - if the jigs you are throwing are in the heavier range, say 3/8 to 1 oz, on a baitcaster, then thats power fishing in its purest form. i prefer flipping and pitching heavy cover over anything, but i love me a good finesse jig (1/16-1/4 oz) on a spinning set up when i fish a river or creek.. Siebert Outdoors Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 in general how much time do you spend fishing power lures to finesse lures? do many of you find that using power lures for searching doesnt work and then use finesse lures regardless?? i fish slow, I'm not in any big hurry. I would say 90% finesse or slow fishing and 10 Power fishing. Quote
fishingfrenzy Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 80% finesse and 20% power, it also depends what body of water I'm at. Many lakes and ponds that I fish are public with high fishing pressure so thats when finesse shines. Other times I go to private, secluded ponds that the fish rarely see lures so I use bigger lures with more aggresive retrieves. Most of my big bass are caught on bigger lures, but I do catch some 6 pounders on finesse stuff. There are many factors that involve in the use of power and finesse. In a tournament, I first try to catch a limit, so I usually start with finesse. After you catch a limit, you aren't going to keep using the small stuff so move I move on to the bigger lures for the bigger stuff. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 10, 2006 Super User Posted April 10, 2006 Although I prefer power fishing, at least 75% of my fishing is finesse. I use spinning tackle exclusively for finesse and baitcasting for power. It's also about light vs. heavy line and big lures vs. soft plastics for me. With live bait it's light tackle for smallmouth and heavy bass equipment for stripers. Quote
reelnmn Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I am definitely an overwhelming finesse fisherman - about 90% finesse, 10% power. However, I think it also depends on the body of water you are fishing. For instance, one lake up in West Virginia is a very shallow lake that is loaded with big stumps. All my fishing buddies like to finesse fish each log... Even though I'm a finesse fisherman at heart, I fish this lake 90% of the time burning a spinnerbait around the stumps. I out fish them 5:1 most days. However, on my home lakes I've never caught a bass on a spinnerbait, go figure. Like alot of other answers here...it all depends. : Quote
