skeeter_bit Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 If you find man-made crappie steak beds do yall fish them I have and do but havent had much luck what approch do you take I have tried spinnerbaits and cranks on the out side of them I have never pitched anything into them I think the bass should be close by as they hold crappie and bluegill Quote
KenDammit28 Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 I don't know if Crappie are too fond of steaks...but they do like stakes! Just havin some fun with ya. Are you fishing for the bass, or for the crappie? I would probably take a better look around the area and see what other types of cover are there and if there is any grass or ledges close by. If I were fishing around it..I'd probably throw a white shad type color spinnerbait, and heck I may even go buy a pack of those storm crappie swimbaits for the heck of it and give them a try. My main attempt would be the spinnerbait, though...try fishing it through the stake bed. Quote
CJ Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 We have years where the bass would get in them.A spinnerbait has worked best for me.I would kill it in between the stakes or rip it after hitting a stake and then kill it.It is usually a short lasting pattern during the Spring and usually don't produce quality size fish. Poor Richard Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Nothing works better than sinking a nice-sized tree, even a wad of Christmas trees. --------------------- Can't know what's under the water 'til you know what's there Quote
FlyRod Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Mmmmmmm...Crappie Steak Beds! Could I get an electric blanket and some tartar sauce with that? (Mebbe a big ol' glass of sweet tea and some hushpuppies too?) Personally, although crappies steaks are OK, I prefer crappie wings, Buffalo style! (FlyRod, shut up!....OK :-[) Fligh Rahd Quote

CJ Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Minnows on a slip cork or a 1/16 oz. tube jig in pink and chartuese.Crappie are being caught 1-6 ft. right now.Start at 1 ft. and work your way out deeper as the sun gets out.Make sure your on some brush, preferably on a gravel bank. Most of the fish are caught right above the cover. KenDammit28 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 if i'm fishing for crappie, 9 times out of 10..I'm using a chartreuse headed road runner with some variation of color roadrunner body. That and live minnows are all I've ever used for crappie fishing. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted April 10, 2006 Super User Posted April 10, 2006 I've never tried crappie steaks in bed. I usually like to have mine at the kitchen table. Can't help ya, sorry. Quote
Shad_Master Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 In the history of my local bass club there is the lore of the "stake bed" tournament on a particular lake that we fish a lot. As the story goes, this was before my time, the boats were all gathered around the stake beds and everybody was catching fish -- the tournament was won on this spot. Since I have been associated with the club (as a non-boater) the tradition has been for the first blast position to head there and every boat in the tournament ends up there some time during the day. I can't say that I have had much luck there, but the feeling is that the bass will move in on the blue gill and crappie that are attracted to the stakes and become active feeders. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 10, 2006 Super User Posted April 10, 2006 Skeeter-Bit, you got a scents o' humor, man! If you find one of those beds, it's worth a few casts. I always throw a spinnerbait past one. Don't always find a bass on them, but it's worth a shot. Try the side nearest deeper water in the summer. It's a high enough percentage spot to deserve a few casts. Quote
