redboat Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 Go to BPS and get KVD's DVD about spinnerbaits. Its all you need for start. KVD was at the Bass Pro school I mentioned. Did a whole hour on spinner baits. Nice guy. I tried everything he suggested - no luck. Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 30, 2006 Super User Posted March 30, 2006 My guess is your sarcasm will limit the amount of help you will get here. Let him be.........I 'm not the one that after 10,000 casts hasn 't caught a fish on a spinnerbait. Quote
redboat Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 My guess is your sarcasm will limit the amount of help you will get here. Yeah, I was wonderin' howcum nobody was posting answers in this thread... Quote
Rattletrap Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I have caught plenty of bass with them. Throw that Spinnerbait into the heaviest wood, and work that "thang" back out. Up and over, in and out, bump and thump......Wham!!!!! fish on!!!!! Quote
mike90 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 10,000 cast and no fish? are you sure you are throwing them into the water? i can catch them on a spinnerbait when nothing else works and you can bet i will have one tied on all the time. if you work them right you will always catch fish. somedays they want it right under the surface other days dragged along the bottom or zig zaged back to you or...... figure out what they are hitting that day and just hang on Quote
Garnet Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Buddie just let it go spinnerbaits are not your deal get that tjig out there and beat the lips off those bad boys and be happy. Garnet Quote
Poor Richard Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Oh come on, everyone knows it doesn't matter what you're throwing if you don't spit on it. And about sarcasm: sarcasm is a gift. It is almost as good as irony. -------------------------- Take a kid fishing today. If he acts up, use him for live bait. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 31, 2006 Super User Posted March 31, 2006 Hmm... I had to go through this thread twice just to see if anyone was serious. Rather than being a smart aleck, I will just suggest spending some time in the BassResource. com Library. I hate to critisize a serious question on the forum, but this is just funny! All right you guys...The short answer is yes, everyone that has EVER fished a spinnerbait has caught a fish. Quote
Cephkiller Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I think that if you've thrown a bait 10,000 times and never caught a fish on it you have some sort of personality disorder. Give up! And to top it off, you've bought over 500 of them! I don't think any retrieve can help. Just chucking and winding it should have fooled at least a few easy fish over the years. I have no clue what advice to give you. My six year old daughter has caught spinnerbait bass and she's only thrown them a few times. Good luck. I am not trying to be mean, but this post really blows my mind. I just hope you are pulling our legs. Quote
Guest avid Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 10,000 casts with no fish. My suggestion is to tie the spinnerbaits to a line before throwing them. you may not catch any fish, but it will be alot cheaper. ;D Quote
basser89 Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Hey pscarbor, What are your water temps? Spinnerbaits are my absolute favorite way to catch bass! For me, I have to have water temps, at the very least in the very high 40's (perferably 50 and above)! Any temps lower tell me to fish other lures for my style of fishing. Take some time and do what Raul said, read the articles that Glenn has provided for us (they'll help)! Another tip, pick up KVD's Proven Spinnerbait Techniques video. His video has a ton of good information as well and, IMO, will really help you! When you go fishing, just take your spinnerbaits and leave everything else at home. This will teach you to let the bass tell you what they want on that given day! Short story for you. I got to fish a few hours today, and the conditions here looked great for spinnerbaits. It took me about an hour and a half to finally figure out the right lure color, blade combination, retreive speed and cover before I finally figured out the pattern. Landed a keeper and a few dinks after that. Hope this helps! Quote
Super User RoLo Posted March 31, 2006 Super User Posted March 31, 2006 10,000 casts without a bass, suggests to me that there are few if any bass in that water. Quote
JayDub Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 All I have to say is H&H SPINNER BAITS. THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING 'BOUT!!! ;D 8-) Quote
Chris Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Let's break this down a little if you don't mind pscarbor. Are you fishing clear water? around cover? What is the the spinnerbait you are currently using more importanly what configuration? (Blade) It could be that you just need to tweak what your doing a little. Quote
Chris Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I know for myself in super clear water I can not catch bass on a spinnerbait for nothing Quote
paparock Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I for one have never caught a fish on a spinnerbait. Of course it might change if I actually threw one. There is one in my tackle box some where. I just haven't found it yet. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 31, 2006 Super User Posted March 31, 2006 there is no way somebody could make 10000 casts with a spinnerbait and not get a fish.my mind refuses to accept that.if it is true just give up on them and use some other techniques.obviously spinnerbaiting isn't your thing.it didn't take me 10000 casts to dump my helicoptor lures!!!good luck dude. Quote
redboat Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 Ok, looks like the responses have been sorta like this: 1) I don't believe you've thrown spinnerbaits 10,000 times and not caught a fish, you must be kiddin'!!! Believe it, that parts serious. And don't forget the 20,000 times I've seen other people throw spinners - when you add that to the 10,000 I've personally thrown that means around 28,000 times a spinner didn't work. 2) Go read the articles, go buy the latest KVD video, etc. Been there, done that. I've read all the articles on this site and many others; I even bought the "fishing tips" advertised here. This is a neat site, lotsa good articles. And I wouldn't have started this thread before reading the articles. But the articles tend to be generic - explaining all the different retrieves, colors, blade types, etc. when what would be more helpful would be specifically what worked at a given time under certain conditions. One author even began by saying a lot of anglers had given up on spinner baits; he couldn't understand why. The reason's simple: They didn't catch anything on 'em! 3) Must not be any fish in that lake I fish Fork a lot, I've heard there's bass in it. Even caught a few myself. 4) Try <some specific tip> Thanks, thats what I was looking for. The tips about retrieves I think were most helpful; I'll try the bottom bumping and up and down retrieves, see if I have any luck with them. Now for a question: Nobody mentioned trailer hooks. Does anybody use 'em? What about pork rinds? Or worm trailers? Anyway, thanks for the helpful tips and I hope I didn't hurt anybody's feelings (too much) being sarcastic. I'm heading for Sam Rayburn this weekend, I'll let you all know how I make out. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Yes,I've caught lots and lots of bass on a spinnerbait. It's my go to search bait .Don't know why you haven't caught any,but I can tell ya that you have to make LOTS of casts to find the fish.If you make 50 casts and put it down, chances are you won't catch many with a spinnerbait.I throw mine into heavy wood cover because it's virtually snagproof. Also throw it around, over, and through vegetation. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted March 31, 2006 Super User Posted March 31, 2006 If you're getting hits that you can't convert, then you answered you're own question, try a trailer hook. If you're not getting hits on the spinnerbait, then maybe Chris answered your question. I know for myself in super clear water I can not catch bass on a spinnerbait for nothing There's a time and place for every lure. In spite of their tremendous popularity, I personally fish spinnerbaits 'only' in stained and murky water, In clear water I'll reach for something else. Because of its superior vibration (in dingy water), I use a Single Colorado almost exclusively. Roger Quote
Peter E. Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I have caught fish on spinners in everybody of water that I have ever fished. A spinner is my go to bait, I can cover alot of water and a multitude of depths with them. Also I and many other people would probably much more helpful without the wise cracks. Bless your heart though if you have trouble catching fish on a spinnerbait, quit fishing with them. Peter Quote
Vyron Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 When u retrieve the spinnerbait concentrate . Try 2 feel the vibrations all the time . Any difference set the hook. Vary ur speed retrieve. Periodically speed up ,slow down etc. Pop and hop it while u retrieve Yo-Yo it Work it like u would with a worm. Its extremely verstatile lure. Experiment For clear water I use double willow blades and clear skirt and i retrieve it very fast if the sky is cloudy i use white color skirt and blades For stained water : Tandem (one willow and one colorado) I use 2 colors for my skirts: Chart. and firetiger The blades are gold or copper and if the sky is cloudy i use chart or firetiger blades. For muddy water: Single colorado blade For skirt colors: black with red fl. or chart. For blade : Gold ,copper or nickel black Quote
Tucson Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Well you've discovered a big secret - they DON'T catch bass. It's just a sales ploy to get your money. Same thing with Senko's. So I'm willing to help out any members with these worthless lures by disposing of them for you. No need to thank me, just a little service for my fellow bassers. ;D Quote
