blanked Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 this guy got me started bass fishing 20 years ago. i lost touch with him but he seems to be like Anna Kournikova ( might have mispelled ) is to tennis. i dont follow pro bass anglers that much to know what the problem is with him so i am asking. is he cocky? rude to fans? attitude problem? or is it because his track record isnt up to par with other pros on the water and he is popular anyway? i am refering to Velvick Quote
BiggerWorm Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Well for one thing Anna is HOT!! She has never one a grand slam but extrememely nice to watch at her attempt. I'm not sure what happened to Velvick, I will check back on this thread to find out myself. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 1, 2006 Super User Posted April 1, 2006 For me .... I don't hate the guy or like the guy. But his "West Side" crap gets a little old on Bass Center. I also thought it was pretty comical how he was talking up Amistad all winter long and all the giant bass he was catching and then when the tourney comes along he blanks. I even put him on my fantasy team for the week >. I think "hate" is a too strong of word here. I think it's pretty hard to say you hate some one, when probably 99% of the people here have ever met the guy personally. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 1, 2006 Super User Posted April 1, 2006 Oh yeah, and do I have to even tell you why Anna Kournikova doesn't have to win a tourney to keep my attention. :-* Quote
jcook Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 velvick is possibly one of the most annoying people associated with bass fishing. ike was abrasive at first but now is one of the most entertaining people in the sport. velvick speaks like he is at the top and i have not ever heard of him doing anything big(as far as tourney's go). he talks west coast smack every episode and i don't live on the west coast. i find it amusing that he talks about how the west coast anglers are superior anglers and then gets blanked. personnally, i like the hack attack, kvd, and ike...but not velvick. Quote
Madhouse27 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I kind of consider Velvick more of a TV personality than a professional fisherman. I dont know about this west coast schtick of his either. I live on the coast of Maine so I guess I'm down with east cost thang. At some point the man needs to start catching a few fish or simply give up the tournament scene. In all honesty I find the other guy on Bass Center more irritating then Byron. Maybe they could just get a couple of babes to do the show. Quote
Mattlures Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 before you guys doubt his abilities read this http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/Byron_Velvick.html Byron is a friend of mine. He is not cocky and he is one of the nicest guys you could meet. he is on TV so he has to be enertaining. If not he would be boring. Cut him some slack. About Amistad. Byron went for broke. he threw big swimbaits and dumped a few big fish. Once he fell behind he had no choice but to stay with the big baits. It was his only chance to catch up and it didnt pay off. It has in the past and he owns the 3 day world record for a tournament bag on swimbaits. Give him some time to adjust to the rest of the country. Rojas sucked at first when he left So Cal. Now look at him. Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 1, 2006 Super User Posted April 1, 2006 I like Byron, he doesn't bother me at all. He may not be KVD, but he doesn't need to be. Look at some other sports, and you will find that some of the best analysts were not the best at playing their sport. Quote
Hamlet Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 When you said "I am referring to Velvick" , I didn't know who you were talking about, but from the posts I see that you're talking about the Basscenter guy. I don't give a rip about competitive bass fishing so I can't comment on that, but the impression that I get from watching the show is that he is a really nice guy,..seems really upbeat and happy. Do people actually dislike this guy? Quote
KenDammit28 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I think he's a great guy. He's knowledgable about fishing, he's tells things like they are..and he's just a guy that likes to have fun. Can't see whats not to like about him. Quote
ikeslayer Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Wasn't he on the tv show Bachelor a while back or something like that???? Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Velvick has won tournaments out West,so he does know how to fish.I honestly think he is just a nice guy.As far as "West Coast" is going,I think it's all a big joke.So Velvick is no KVD.I don't know of anybody else out there who is. Quote
Captain Cali Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I don't have a problem with him. I've learned a lot from listening to Byron on Basscenter. People are just jealous that he got a hot chick that can fish! There, I said it! (man it's late!) I can see the westside thing annoying some people but I don't think he says is that much. I think that's just his way of celebrating the way it's done out here. GO BIG OR DON'T GO! Quote
0119 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I got to shake his hand at the classic expo and he is definately cheerful. I dont think he touts the west coast on the air, any more than KVD used to talk about michigan michigan michigan on his dvds, or tattoo boy mentioned jersey and his childhood. Quote
Minuteman Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I honestly can't think of anyone associated with fishing I hate or even dislike. I run into people locally that are rude and obnoxious, but I figure they're rude people who just happen to fish occasionally. Byron seems to have a great sense of humor and the whole West Coast thing is his schtick. I think them guys didn't get the respect in the bass world they felt they deserved. I remember in the early days of BASS not hearing a single person that didn't have a southern accent. That has changed and the west coast fishing styles are sure catching on now. Hey, Byron. East Coast is still number #1, though Now get a haircut, hippie. Quote
sodaksker Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I think it is great to have an actual tournament fishermen in the basscenter studio. He brings more realism to the commentary. There is no doubt in my mind that he has that job due to his stint on the "batchellor". That is the way Hollywood works, they see a way to link our sport to a part of the world that may never have watched. Now, if my wife happens to be in the room when I'm watching basscenter she can actually recognize someone and maybe relate to the show. I will say that I was not excited about Byron in the beginning(due to my dislike of the batchellor batchellorette shows)but, I have warmed up to the guy and I think he has done good job. Unfortunatley for him he will always be an easy target due to his batchellor gig. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I don't see why people hate him other than the fact he's annoying. What I don't understand is why people REALLY hate Mike Iaconelli (#6 most hated athlete in the world). That guy rocks. Quote
FALCON Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH VELVICK. I THINK HE DOES A GOOD JOB ON BASSCENTER, ALWAYS UPBEAT AND HE KNOWS BASS FISHING. IT'S HIS PARTNER ON THE SHOW THAT NEEDS TO GO. I THINK THEY SHOULD PAIR-UP VELVICK AND ZONA FOR BASSCENTER. THAT WAY BASSCENTER WOULD HAVE A WEST COAST/MICHIGAN FLAIR. Quote
dink Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Velvick is cool. Ike is fine. KVD is a good guy. Ish rules. I've met and/or seen many professionals at many locations. The all have distinct personalities much like the BR members do. I try not to bad-mouth anyone no matter who they are, based on the boob tube. TV is a fantasy land. It's really a shame some people actually have to waste alot of time and effort insulting other fisherman in the name of hearsay. Get a life and go fish! Quote
Madhouse27 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 Falcon, that's a great idea. Probably be good chemistry between the two of them. Quote
flyphisher # Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 The Velvick/ Skeet Reese Westside is funny to me.It reminds me of the way Non-southern nascar drivers whining about the state of racing a few years back :.... Ike on the other hand is a total TOOL in my opinion who is pretty good at fishing and selling himself when he's not destroying products provided for him by sponsors or having an excitement seizure after catching a 15" bass. Quote
BassChaser57 Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I kinda like the guy on TV. Don't kknow much about him in a boat. I wonder if some guys are jelous as the ladies think he it HOT. He seems like a nice enough guy to me. Quote
Captain Cali Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I wonder if some guys are jelous as the ladies think he it HOT. He seems like a nice enough guy to me. Bingo! Quote
Rattletrap Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 He might not be your Pro guy to watch, but nobody should be hating people. Hate is a strong word, and people that actually hate others usually live a miserable life. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted April 3, 2006 Super User Posted April 3, 2006 He's been fishing for over 15 years on BASS, seems like it would sink in, you aren't going to the classic throwing swimbaits. Because, he's on Bass Center for being the "Bachelor" as opposed to his accomplishments in the sport of bass fishing. Very few have ever heard of him till the bachelor, versus his fishing production on the water. He didn't, and hasn't earned his spot yet. Last years Classic, this years classic, Amistad, Rayburn, and its still a West Coast thing. Its old. Just like IKE got old with his screaming on every fish, small and large. Quote
