janalon Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Does anyone make practice with excerise to improve ones chest and back muscles? My side aches like the devil after a long day of flipping, It gets better as the tornament year goes on. What do we do to keep in shape? And no, I am not getting old Roadwarrior! Quote
CJ Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 I think the fishing alone keeps ,the muscles I use, somewhat in shape. But I am sore as a type. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 22, 2006 Super User Posted March 22, 2006 I'm thinkin' more beer. I don't like anything about flipping, but that's another story. Getting worn out flipping is like the old man's story making fun of his wife, "I'm worn out, I've been ironin' all day," or the modern version, "I'm beat, been shoppin' all day!" What part of flipping is work? Jerking in too many big bass? Quote
paparock Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 I'm in shape if you call being like a big apple as a shape. I have now purchased a bowflex now all I have to do is USE IT. I need more exercise than "flipping" channels during the winter!!! Quote

Fishing Doug Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 janalon, No matter what exercises you do, you may still experience a little soreness unless you are doing exercises that are very close to the same range of motion as your cast/flip. (I speak from experience-I have been into non-competitive bodybuilding for 7 years and I am still sore after a day of slingin' my baitcaster) If you are experiencing muscle soreness, stretching before and after fishing will likely help as much as exercises. If the 'pain' you are experiencing is joint/skeletal related, you might want to be more concerned about it. Or...I like RW's idea, sling 12 ounces at a time and forget all about it! ;D Quote
janalon Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 Well, that's goodnews, I am glad to hear that I a Quote
janalon Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 THAT I am not the only one sore, yes it does get better as the year goes on, maybe I should go to the gym more often, or less? Thanks guys! Quote
abelfisher Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Just go Flippin more often! ;D That is exercise! Quote
Guest avid Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Get a Leftie filippin outfit. Switch between the two arms. this can be a real advantage, not just for aches and pains, but when the boat and target position lend themselves to one side over the other. Quote

Brad_Coovert Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I don't like anything about flipping, but that's another story. OK, what's so bad about flippin'? Tell the tale. :-? One of my club members just got transferred to Mississippi to manage a new manufacturing plant for his company. His new lakes are a whole lot different than the ones here in Indiana. He can catch fish the way he did up here, but he is learning he will do better with other methods, including flipping. He is just dreading it. Brad Quote

You might need a new pair of shoes. Seriously. Also, if you are like me a day of flippin or pitching involves very little standing straight with good posture. Add to that, your body rocking to account for boat movement and you will probably be sore after a full day, unless you are used to it. I don't like anything about flipping, but that's another story We're all up for a good story... sounds like this one could rival the dirty diaper story! ;D Quote
Rattletrap Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Fishing belts help a lot. Check out this info: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/back_pain.html Quote
paully Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I'm glad I have my youth and I work out! ' May I ask what muscles bother you the most after a day of flippin? Quote
janalon Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 I think that pitching is what really does it to me, I mostly fish with a baitcaster, but I also use a spinning reel, actually I am the only one if my club that does. I can pitch it with extreme accuarcy, my club members think it is a real big deal, they have numerous names and phrases for me, "Playing pool with a fairy wand" If one get's hung up, they will jokingly ask me to pitch to the spot and unhang them. They make a big deal out of it but that's just because they do not use them. At any rate, the muscles on my right side, about mid ways, this is the side that I use to pitch. It got so bad last tournament that, I had to start casting it over hand, which I lose my accuracy. I think that stretching may be the answer, plus learning to pith with my left hand would also help. blanked Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 i second that in that i dont like pitchin and or flippin either. its just not my cup of tea if you call it . bringing in a fish intentionally from 5 feet out is like shooting a deer 10 feet down from a deer stand. Quote
bassnleo Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I practice my flipping and pitching over the winter, seems to help keep the muscles used to the repetitive motion nad alleviates some of the soreness. Quote
