directlink Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 I was wondering hom many use this knot. I've never used it, and am wondering if I should maybe start. http://www.steelheader.net/knots/double_clinch.htm Quote
AFC Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 I use something similar but I put the loop over the bait and dont trim it off. http://www.steelheader.net/knots/polamar_knot.htm Quote
nwgabassmaster Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 If I am not mistaken, the first knot is the ole Jimmy Houston knot. At least, that was the one that he used when he fished on his show. I use the Palomar knot exclusively. Never failed me yet. Quote
demented Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 I use the Polamar knot except when rigging a Carolina set-up. I've had good results with the Trilene knot on mono, but not on braided. I think the Trilene knot breaks the strands of braideds this causes it to break too easily. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted March 3, 2006 Super User Posted March 3, 2006 If I am not mistaken, the first knot is the ole Jimmy Houston knot. At least, that was the one that he used when he fished on his show. I use the Palomar knot exclusively. Never failed me yet. I believe you're right. That knot is basically a trilene type knot with the line doubled. Quote
slappy Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 never used it but I might give it a try, yea, you guys are right it seems to be a some sort of improved treline. Quote
Papa_Tom Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 It's a double clinch. There was the clinch, double clinch and the improved clinch. Then the Palomar became the go-to knot for most bass applications. Quote
Guest avid Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 seems like alot of work. I don't see any advantage to it over the palomer or the trilene. I use 3 knots palomer - jigs, spinnerbaits, hooks trilene - most lures with treble hooks rapala - hard jerk baits, some topwaters. I feel very comfortable with these three. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted March 3, 2006 Super User Posted March 3, 2006 I have use the double cinched blood knot or what i thought was the doubled blood knot. I would always snag a little grass with my doubled ends. Texas has lots of grass and the palomar knot since switching has always proven the best in strength and slides through the grass with more ease and less snags. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 3, 2006 Super User Posted March 3, 2006 I tie a Palomar Knot on everything except big treble hook lures. On these bigger baits the Palomar is just too unwieldy, so I tie a Trilene Knot on these lures. Both are rated 100% knots and I have never had any problems. I want to point out however, that the line should not be twisted if you use the Palomar, it must be tied correctly to maintain 100% integrity. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 3, 2006 Super User Posted March 3, 2006 When tieing the initial part of the knot, before bringing the lure through the loop, the line should not be twisted or overlapped. That can result in the knot cutting itself. In effect, you might think of it as working with four seperate lines that only cross at the point where the initial knot is tied. Once the lure is passed through the loop, the line should be thoroughly wetted and the knot tightened by SLOWLY pulling the tag end tight. With light line and small hooks, be sure to check closely that the line has not caught on the eyelet. Quote
janalon Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Hmm, that is interesting, I will have to try that. Road Warrior, how do you think that would play on Yo-Zuri? Quote
Triton_Mike Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 That knot listed in the first link is the knot I use 100% of the time. It's called a Braid Knot. I've never seen it called a double cinch knot before. If your having problems with fluorocarbon breaking that there is the KNOT to use! Very good knot and like Road Warrior I don't like the palomar due to treble hooks hanging up when you pass the bait through the loop. Here is another link to the same knot but called the braid knot. http://triplefish.net/knots_.html Mike Quote
chunter_ksu Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 As far as the line twist with Yo-Zuri I have been using it for a couple years and it is stiff enough (due to the flouro i guess) that it doesn't twist too badly especially in the higher weight ratings. It will twist though but if you pay attention you won't have a problem. Where I have the twist problems I am usually using a smaller diameter "soft" line. IMO Quote
Bass Hammer Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 That is a great knot. T-Mike showed me that earlier this year and now I use it almost all the time. Like he said it works great with fluoro. Quote
Guest avid Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 RW, I'm surprised that a jerk baiter like yourself doesn't have a favorite loop knot. Don't you think you loose some action tying a trilene or palomer on a jerkbait instead of a quality loop like the rapala? Sometimes I'll take a lucky craft oval split ring and put it on some of my bigger jerkbaits. I do this when I don't want to over 8 lb test line and I'm hoping to tie into a good un. Then I can use a trilene or palomer and not dampen the action of the lure. Quote
Whopper Stopper Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I mainly use a palomar know. I also use one where you tie a loop in your line with a double or triple know. Then, pass the loop through the eye of the hook, pass the lure through the loop and pull tight around the eye. I like this knot because you don't have to cut your line. When you want to switch baits, just pass the lure back through the loop and pull the loop through the eye. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 5, 2006 Super User Posted March 5, 2006 I use to tie the Rapala Knot on small Rapalas, but I'm more comfortable using a split ring these days. Quote
Rattletrap Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 The Palomar knot is awesome. I have seen it line tested by Hank Parker using a knot testing machine. It never broke at the knot. It broke above the knot, exceeding the lb test used by 10lb plus. I'll have to try that Braided line knot on my big treble hook lures. Quote
Rattletrap Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I use to tie the Rapala Knot on small Rapalas, but I'm more comfortable using a split ring these days. The key to split rings is not tying the knot in the split of the ring. It will damge the knot. That's not an issue with those new oblong split rings. Quote
