I don't know if any of you have been watching the Olympics, but they have just about every "sport" represented.  Curling is my favorite ;D  I was thinking, if some of these off the wall "sports" are featured at the Olympics, why not bass fishing?  I know I'm dreaming, but who do you think would be USA's biggest competition?

well italy has a b.a.s.s. federation so there must be lake's there

as a matter of fact there are alot of foreign fed's

but of course the first one would have to be at the big o

I might catch some cr*p here but ................... Bass Fishing is NOT A SPORT ...... it's a hobbie.  It takes darn near no athletic ability to catch a bass.  Golf, by far closer to sport than fishing and I still call that a game (almost a sport).

I think all of these so called sports are an embarrassment to the Olympics IMO.

I dont think bass fishing could really pass as a sport. There is way too much mechanical invovement in order to be a real sport. But wait, this just hit me. If people can be in the olympics for shooting at things, why not casting at things. There is a lot more physical involvement in casting, working a lure, and fighitng a fish then holding a gun/ bow steady....... its a toss up.

Go deep sea fishing are saltwater fishing for big game fish and then tell me it's not a sport. Fight a tarpon for 1 hour and you'll change your mind quickly the next morning.

I agree rocknfish casting at things would be a good competition. Maybe not for Olympics but maybe as a competiton for a tournament.

You're crazy!!!  If they can pass curling off as a sport, why not bass fishing?  I've been trying to figure out this curling thing and the best I can tell it's simply shuffleboard on ice. ;D ;D ;D

Yep, you're right.  Like I said, these so called "sports" liike curling are an ebarrassment to the Olympics.

Cool idea to think about, but I don't think bass fishing is a global enough past time.  Besides, imagine the chaos....you see hundreds of anglers show up for tournaments...something as big as the olympics would be insane!

im a wrestler so i know all about hard sports but i think fishing is up there with most of all the other hard spirts. think about it how many people do u know that quit fishing cuz they cant catch a fish or its "boring" its only boring cuz they cant catch a fish. fishing takes alot of skill and teqnique as well as phisycal and mental strength(for most types of fishing) so i think fishing is a sport i dont know if it can be in the olympics but it is a sport.

I don't know about the Olympics, but the USA has a fishing team.

I read about it in a magazine at the dentist's office, I can't remember the name of the magazine but it talked about match fishing and there were teams from all the major countries USA, UK, and most of the European countries were represented.

The fishing was for any species and they used poles that looked like graphite cane poles and they had assigned areas they could fish.

I don't know if Bass Fishing specifically should be an Olympic sport but I do think competitive sport fishing of one variation or another should be Olympic sports.  Ice Fishing should definitely be one in the Winter Olympic's sports

And yet, they took baseball out of the summer olympics...Yeah, that makes sense...we'll keep skeet shooting and curling, but get rid of a real sport...sigh

Definiton of a sport : Recreational or competitive activitie that involves a degree of physial strength or skill.

I think that fishing fits the definition of a sport perfectly. Not only is fishing a sport, i feel it is the best sport America has. :)

Well, based on what we see, an Olympic event may or may not be 'athletic',

but it always involves a skill. Good examples of non-athletic events are Curling and Archery.

Angling is not athletic either, but why sell ourselves short. Fishing calls for a skillset that includes

spinning, casting, chart-reading, lure manipulation, boat positioning, hook-setting and more.

If there were enough political pressure, I see no reason why angling can't be recognized

as an Olympic event, say in the format of Match Fishing.

If you compare the athletic requirements of archery, curling and fishing, I'd give fishing the nod.

To me, shuffleboard with granite kettles doesn't appear very strenuous. I've shot 50 to 100 arrows

without a break, but right after landing an 80-lb bluefin tuna, a little fishing break is much appreciated :P

NOT A SPORT??????

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU FISHED FOR EIGHT HOURS IN TWO-THREE FOOT WAVES WHILE OPERATING THE TROLLING MOTOR, CASTING TO A SPECIFIC SPOT, FIGHTING A FOUR-FIVE POUND SMALLMOUTH, GETTING THE LANDING NET, ALL THE WHILE TRYING NOT FALL OUT OF THE BOAT.

I WAS A WIDE RECIEVER IN FOOTBALL AND A CENTER FIELDER IN BASEBALL. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I CAME HOME FROM FISHING MORE TIRED THEN IF I PLAYED A COMPLETE GAME.

YES, WE'RE FISHERMEN BUT WE'RE ALSO ATHLETES.

I'm with you KU.  Bass fishing is not a sport.......it's a way of life!  ;D  The entire Winter Olympics are a joke if you really think about it.  They were created.  Winter sports did not exist in Ancient Greece.  I've never seen one of those statues of an Olympian with skis or skates.  Maybe in a hundred years or so we'll also have the Fall Olympics and there will be a Dream Team for leaf raking or something.  Or maybe the Spring Olympics with events like the 100m spawn.  OK that's enough for now. ;D ;D
