Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted December 22, 2005 Super User Posted December 22, 2005 I would say anything that you would normally fish with. Find the current breaks both above and below the water and you should find some fish. Quote
preach4bass Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 How wide and fast is the river? Is it tidal? What rivers are you going to be fishing? Quote

powerfish Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Hey bassattack sounds like you will be in my neck of the woods. I live about 2 hours from the columbia and have fished some tournys there. It is a awsome fishery however it can be fickel also. As far as what holes to fish...pick one it is a giant river and depending on what part of the river you plan to fish, ie. upper, mid or lower. The smallie are huge and the largies are even bigger. It has a lot of current when flowing, very deciving and can be very calm when the current is shut off. Be carefull it is big water and can get very nasty when the wind blows, I mean six foot rollers that will swamp you in a hurry. However it's a blast to fish, Find grass beds for largies and throw a craw colored yo zury or rattel trap and rip it through the grass. drop shot or c-rig for smallies and dont be afraid to fish them in fifty to sixty feet of water, But try shallow first and where there is and river or tributary entering the main river. Other than that have fun. Quote
bassattack1990 Posted December 22, 2005 Author Posted December 22, 2005 crap sounds like i need to ask for a boat for chrismis LOL Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 dude, this is my favorite place to catch largies! First, you go to an area away from the river, the little backwaters that look like small ponds. If you find one of these, you can really catch some fish! Not many people target largemouths in our river, and when they see these calm weedy areas, the first thing on their mind is just carp territory. Also, spinnerbaits in deep wood cover always produces. bronzeback_NW Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Bassattack,I live 5 mins from the river(columbia)and have been bassing it for about 5 yrs now.I am in Tri-Cities if you can let me know where your at I would be happy to help you out as much as possible.Just send me a message or whatever.By the way I was fishing a tournamet in oct when the water was really low and caught more largies than I had ever before. There is time for largemouth up here but what you want to consentrate is the smallmouth. You rarely will catch a largemouth in the 10lb class on the river.I do know of some caught down in patterson that hit 10 but again that is rare.I fish alot of ponds up in the basin that hold monster fish and do very well.If I'm on the river I want big smallies.A friend of mine got a 7.9 smallie late in the season, now thats a dream fish. Some of you on here know Bob Atkinson(guild) from here, that was his new record smallmouth.Feel free to contact me if you want.GB..Jim Quote
Trixie81 Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I agree with rocknfish9001....the spinner baits are awesome! I have had great luck with them near pilings. The small pond areas also...especially near lily beds. Trista dude, this is my favorite place to catch largies! bronzeback_NW Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 I wish we had Lillys on the Columbia but we don't that I know of.And I have lived on the river or near by it all my life. Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 I looked pretty hard for our weedy areas, and found these calm pools full of lilys, and some type of hydrila. It makes for great bass fishing, and if you get bored, the carp always bite too. It took me a while to find these areas. They dont get fished hard because you need a small jon boat like mine to get into the backwaters. I doubt a bass boat could go in there. Quote
flippinmaster Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 I would fish points and coves or just try to caught some current fish for a hard fight. Also just match the lure to the type of structure your fishing. Quote
