Preston Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Oh i know that its ruff, my good friends dad is on FLW and he has to WORK to get there. I was just saying if all it was, was throwing string in water and waiting for fish then it would be easy. And have you ever been tempted to just take a big ol crankbait and just chuck it right out at one of those jetskiers. Never will do it but always will want to. Quote

Never will do it but always will want to. I give a warning cast across the bow. But it rarely helps. I've had people holler back at me "Yo, it's my lake!" :-? > > > : Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 20, 2005 Super User Posted December 20, 2005 GobbleDog, thinking it carefully........it may be fun to catch one of them jetskiers, they must put one heck of a fight. Just in case you consider it in the future, I 've got a Penn Senator 5/0 reel that hasn 't seen action in years with it 's 8 ft rod, it 's the gear I used to fish for marlin and yellow fin tuna when I was younger and could go saltwater fishing whenever I wanted. For what I can tell it can land a 590 lbs marlin without much effort, just give me a holler and I can lend it to you. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 violence is never the answer, for example.... if I happened to be that person on my pwc, I may just go get the Penn 130 2 speed, pull up outside your house in the 27 regulator and yank the deck right off of your house. oh yea, while you are enjoying dinner on it with the family. Now, now,...Not that I would do that, but violence isn't the answer, there is always someone with a bigger reel! Especially when their tax dollars give them just as much right to be there as us. Communication would be a better start IMO. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted December 21, 2005 Super User Posted December 21, 2005 I'm with LBH here. They have as much a right to be there as you do. You know, they might say the same thing about us. Now there is a difference between curtious jet skiers and a . There are certain weekends of the year you should just not fish though. Quote
preach4bass Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 I've heard some of the pros say they like jet-skiers because the baitfish try to hide in their wake, and the bass chase the baitfish, so they're actually good for the fishing. I've never caught bass out of a jet-ski wake, but when I'm catching schooling bass on topwater and they shut off I've started my boat and run around a little bit and stirred things up and the bass started hitting again. So, the jet-skis helping would make sense. But they're still aggervating at times Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted December 21, 2005 Super User Posted December 21, 2005 . But they're still aggervating at times There's the right word. AGGREVATING. Yes they are aggrevating, but have just as much of a right to be there as you do. Quote
Bass Hammer Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 One of the reasons I enjoy winter fishing. Nobody out there but us die-hards. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted December 21, 2005 Super User Posted December 21, 2005 Jetski's :......there's an island on my home lake that I have planted brush around over the past few years and in the summer, the jetskier dudes like to race around that island.Just imagine trying to sit over your brushpiles and having a group of 4-6 jetskis come by you full blast about every 30 seconds for about 10-15 laps. Those guys are killing me! > Quote
Guest avid Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Gloomisman hit the nail on the head. If you take any sport and reduce it to it's elements it sounds ridiculous. Fishing is no exception. But as far as derisive comments go I always got a kick out of "fishing is jerk on one end of a line waiting for jerk on the other" ;D Quote
paparock Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 On the gulf coast of Texas while I was living and fishing off-shore there, we had jet skiers jumping the wakes of our boats as we came back in. One of the guys had one of the jet skiers wipeout when he jumped his wake and the mental giant hurt himself in the process. His buddies got the registration number off the boat so this guy sues the boat owner because he created an attractive nuisance so it was the boat owners fault not the wave jumpers own fault. When I would see the jet skiers I would slow down so they had nothing to jump and they would get mad. I guess there is just no pleaseing some people. : Quote
Bud Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Well this is probley going to get me flamed but here go. First what is the difference between getting washed up on the bank by a pleasure boat or a Bass boat????? Here on Ky lake the bass boats and these so call fishman are lots worse than a jet skier. You would think a a pro fishman would have a little respect for someone else fishing. just my 02 cents Quote
mjbfsh07 Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 I just keep a tennis ball in the boat and if they get real close I call the marine patrol. 150 feet is the safe distance. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 21, 2005 Super User Posted December 21, 2005 Two sides to every story, two wrongs doesn't make it right. When fishing lakes with High volume of "recreational boaters", one needs to consider those conditions into the game plan. We never seem to complain about the two babes that came to close, just the other ones. In my boat, I have a say nothing rule, don't invite them to keep passing by. A ticking contest only brings more of them back. Before you know it, its pleasure craft against fishermen, and its usually explained as the fishermen think they own the lake, or the pleasure craft seem to think they own this lake. One word of advice, if we can't live on the water in the same space, and someone gets hurt from it, it will only cause a government agency to step in and regulate speeds all over the lakes or as in San Diego County Ca., because they make more money off a ski boat than fishing boat on park and lake fees, they will split the days, fishing on Mon-thurs, and Skiing only on Fri-sun. Its already in place out there and been doing it since the early 80"s. Quote
kbj3579 Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 I have to get in on this one. I agree with Matt here. I don't want the government stepping in and telling me when I can and can't fish. And it will happen if people on the water aren't responsible boaters. That goes for fisherman and pleasure boaters. I personally think fisherman and all outdoorsman have a great responsiblility in protecting the outdoors and the waters we fish. Part of protecting these waters goes to being able to share the water. Now I'm not saying that I don't get annoyed sometimes, because I do, it's just that a few bad apples shouldn't be allowed to ruin it for the rest of us. We have to share the water, that's just the way it is. My experiences have been that 99% of the people are very courteous, they are just using the water same as us. Like someone else said, if your fishing during busy seasons, you have to figure that into your gameplan. Quote
Preston Posted December 21, 2005 Author Posted December 21, 2005 Well alot of it has too do with people just dont know. Ever since i started fishing i started realizing the people i would ride with that were non fisherman would get not way to close, but closer than they needed to. I always try to make it a point to tell them to steer clear of the fishermen and after ive told them theyve stopped from what ive seen. I just think that some of these people just dont think about it becuase tehy dont know the problems they are causing. But fisherman who blow past me while im in my kayak going 70 and are bout flipping me i have a seirous problem with becuase they know better. Quote

Jet skiers aren't as bad as the ski boats that want to ski in the creeks because it is to windy for them on the lake. Quote

Its already in place out there and been doing it since the early 80"s. AMEN. The lake association at the lake I'm on in NH had a hearing scheduled to ban jet skis. Over half the people who came asked how they could get a HP limit on the lake. Several more wanted to ban all but electrics, and one idiot wanted no boats at all, as they "upset the loons" (they then went on about how many languages the loons speak in, leading all to believe there was at least one shore-based loon on the lake.) Point is, there's always somebody who wants to be a buzz-kill. I voted against the jet ski ban, even though I think they're a plague on society. It passed, but it's kind of a joke, since the manufacturers simply increased the size, and the new ones are outside the prohibited limits. I've seen a 4-seater. Like kbj, I call the Pond Cops, or flag them down when I see them. They're not at all shy about knocking on a door to discuss proper operation, even if they didn't see it. They're a pretty good bunch of guys in NH, only met one idiot in 40 years of boating up there. Quote
strick9 Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 I'll agree with the fact that jet skis and power boats have as much right to be on the water as I do and if the lake is busy I go elsewhere. However, when I have been fishing an area and there is only one or two other boats or jet skis on the water there is absolutly no reason for them to come within 100 feet of me. That ticks me off and I have yelled at many of them only to usually make it worse. I too have been tempted to make a cast accross thier bow but have not yet. It's not just the power boaters that are not curtious, I was fishing about 100 feet off shore one morning making casts into the shallow flats when another fishing boat decided he wated to motor through between me and the shore line. After yelling at the moron I got flipped off. To bad common sence isn't very common. Mike Quote
