MichiganBass Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Hey All I Just caught a 24 inch 61/2 lb Largemouth today! Its my personal record in addition to the lake record I belive, but I am still checking. I Know thats not huge for all you southern boys(lol), but here in my area its real big. Anyway, I just couldnt keep it so I took a ton of measurements with the hope of getting a repro of it done. Does anybody know how or what it takes to do this? Is it worth it? Any help would be great. WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!!!! p.s 1/4 oz pumpkinseed tube in case you were wondering thx Randy Quote
basser89 Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Hey Randy, Congrats on the catch! That's a nice one where every your from! You can probably check some of your local taxidermists most can do either skin mounts or the replicas. You can also check out Bass Pro Shops' Wildlife Creations. From what I've seen on line, they do real nice work! http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.CFPage?appID=39&template=fiber-ex.cfm&option=2&imageid=largemouth_large.jpg Hope this helps! Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 9, 2005 Super User Posted November 9, 2005 Good fish! Even us "southern boys" can appreciate a 6.5 pounder! We don't get one of those everyday... even at Fork. I'd be sure to talk to you local taxidermist, the reason being that the glass mounts are more of an art project, meaning it's a little different skill set than the guy who does skins and animals. I think if you talk to a few, you'll see by the way they talk about it that they are one or the other. basser89- I'm glad you posted that link, I wouldn't have even thought of bass pro... but since it's a replica there wouldn't be a need to go drop it off! ...lol The prices are very reasonable, I think! One other option you might want to check, google: lake fork taxidermy (I think it's in Yantis proper) and talk to them about prices and such. Those guys probably have more experience with glass mounts than anyone. Congratulations again! And let us know if it turns out to be a lake record. -keith Quote
basser89 Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Hey Keith, I just finished checkin out some local prices here in MD and found that Bass Pro's shop is cheaper than most of the locals and the quality is better from what I can tell on line. A friend and I have been on Lake Fork's site and they do REAL nice work as well! Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 9, 2005 Super User Posted November 9, 2005 Quote A friend and I have been on Lake Fork's site and they do REAL nice work as well! Last time I was in there, they didn't have a web site, just the giant 8' bass cut out from a full sheet of plywood and hanging from a tree! ...lol I haven't been there in about 5 years. I'll have to check out the website just for "old time" sake. Quote
MichiganBass Posted November 9, 2005 Author Posted November 9, 2005 Thanks guys for the replies. I will check out Bass Pro near my house. This was a morning to remember. - Randy Quote
basser89 Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Randy, Good luck and let us know how you make out! If you can post a pic, I'd love to see that hog! Whoever you go with, whenever the replica is done, I'd love to see a pic of the finished product! I've been debating getting one done of the first 5 pounder I caught (the one in my avitar). Keith, I'm 99% sure it was Lake Fork taxidermy we were on but I could be mistaken. I'll ask my fishing partner (that will be easy since I work with him!) and let you know for sure! Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 9, 2005 Super User Posted November 9, 2005 MichiganBass, Even us southern boys like the 6.5lbers. Was that a Northern strain large mouth? Nice Hawg for anytime, anywhere!! ;D Quote
alhuff Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 MichiganBass, nice bass...that reproduction will look good on your wall. Alfred Quote

rocknfish9001 Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 what part of michigan are you from, assuming that you are. I live in Berrien county. Quote
basser89 Posted November 9, 2005 Posted November 9, 2005 Here's the link to Lake Fork Taxidermy! http://www.lakeforktaxidermy.com/ Check out some of their work! Quote
MichiganBass Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 Thanks you guys for all the kind words and advice, especially basser89. I checked out Lake Fork...Wow, really great work. As soon as the mount comes in Ill post it. The offical weight ended up being 6 3/4 lbs, what a HOG!!! By the way, 8lb line 6ft rod and my old beat up Quantum spinning reel. I think this earned me my new Loomis rod and new Shimano or Quantum reel, plus other assorted hundreds of dollars worth of tackle. I have lots of digital photos and as soon as I can figure out how to actually post a pic I will. Thanks again everyone, Ive only been on this great site a couple of weeks but it feels like years. thx Randy Brighton Mich, Livingston County Quote
Cephkiller Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Make sure you ask a lot of questions if using someone local. I asked a local taxidermist about a 'glass replica and asked specifically how/ where to take measurements, photos, etc. and she said "All I need is the weight." When I said I wanted a replica, not just a plastic fish, she looked at me like I was crazy and said maybe I should look somewhere else. If I ever decide to get one, I certainly will. Quote
JD-FL Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 Definately make sure the taxidermist you select is experienced in replicas. He will need the length and girth measurements, along with the weight of the fish. A picture of the fish would also help if you want the fish to look exactly like the one you caught. Last I heard they charge about $12-$15 per inch for a replica. Quote
