Keeping in mind I'm a relative beginner here and ask some questions that are obvious to most of you.

I always here you should fish points!  Why?

Thanks

That's where the bass are!!!! ;D  I am not really sure of the reason why, I just kow that they do produce.  I think it has something to do with depth changes and ambush points.  Somebody I am sure will give the exact reason why.

The short answer is because there are normally fish on a point.

A point represents a change in the contours of the lake and contour is structure whether it's a point, hump, drop off, saddle, ledge, pot hole, etc.  The more pronounced the change the better.  If you can find a point (or any other element of structure) with cover on it (brush, grass, timber, chunk rock, etc.) then you have an excellent chance of finding fish.  Add wind to that combo and most of us will be giddy.  ...lol

points are a distinctive change in shoreline they r usually magnets for bass to hold to to ambush bait that is ther for a number of reasons. it also usually means a change in water depth, from shallow to deep water which bass relate to as do bait. i always fish points , i also follow the point out into deeper water to see how far out it goes and how the bottom transitions off of it. especially in warmer months. they r obvious places to look for fish and a good chance of finding some. shoreline points i find the fish will be on the side of points but neat the tip. i also search for uderwater points they r harder to locate but can be very productive.

Points have a spot where they drop off into deeper water which bass like having shallow water next to deep water. They come up on the point to feed and then they go back down deep where that drop off is.

Now don't forget the other types of points. Besides points of land there are points of cover. Say you are moving down a bank with an obvious weedline. You see a spot where the weeds come out a little farther then the rest. This is a bass magnet. A point could be a bush or stickup that sticks out a little farther. Bass love these because it is a great ambush position and it is also the closest cover to deep water where they feel safe. When bass migrate out of deep water to feed they will more than likely make contact with shallow cover at these types of points. Then they will disperse out into the surrounding area.

Hey check this out fellas. One of the best suggestions I got this spring was to use the log on this site. I downloaded it and customized the idea for my style of fishing. Just spent the last sevral days going over them A vast majority of the time on a given body of water if the first fish was caught off the point most the rest were that day and if the first was in a small cove or pocket the rest were. We even fished points and coves on the same day to see if this held up and except for early spring it did

A point is like a road way that leads to deep water. On most points on either side is a sharp drop. When a lake or any other water way rises and falls bass don't need to move much to find a comfort zone. A point represents an obstacle that a bass can use to ambush food. Some points are rock and sand which crawfish love. When the wind blows across a point it positions fish and bass become more predictable. Points are relatively easy to fish because there isn't much of an area to fish. Any point that has cover on it like weeds, wood, rocks will produce more than one that don't have any but also look and see if it has one deep side or maybe a dog leg that forks off. Its things like this that will make one point better than another. Sometimes the degree that the point leads to deep water can be a factor of which point is better.

Bass relate to structure and cover.

structure is changes in the contour of the bottom.  a point projects structure from shallow water to deeper water.  Cover is shelter.  Weeds, brush, blowdowns etc. all provide hiding (ambush) points.  a point will provide both, thereby drawing bass.  In my lake the main lake points are pounded so hard that they are not great bass producers.  I have much better luck in the little structure or cover changes like a break in the weeds.  Here in Florida you learn alot about weeds.  The best thing I can pass on is that most weeds grow from the bottom. Different weeds like different bottom composition. a break in the weeds probably means a deep water pocket (structure change) = Bass.

And the beat goes on.
