Super User A-Jay Posted January 14, 2009 Super User Posted January 14, 2009 I have purchased a couple of baits from this vendor and there is No doubt he does awesome work - but is $150 plus for one bait getting a little mental ? I guess if you're willing to pay it . . . . . . . If it means the difference between winning and losing the Classic maybe but for a regular Joe - seems excessive. That's all - I won't keep going but I want to - - - - come on spring . . . . . http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Custom-Painted-Spro-BBZ-1-Shad-Swimbait-Crankbait_W0QQitemZ350150998085QQihZ022QQcategoryZ7300QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 A-Jay Quote
T-Bone Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 150 for one bait, no thanks. It better catch a lunker every cast or its not worth it. Quote
Skunked in DR Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 That's nuts. It's start to get like the hardcore Musky guys. Quote
NOVA Angler Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 No way I would pay that much, but d@mn that thing looks good. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted January 14, 2009 Super User Posted January 14, 2009 That guy has got a good thing going. The baits are expensive, no doubt, but people are buying them like crazy. I remember just a year ago there were only a handful of custom painters on eBay, two years ago probably less than five. It's a lucrative business if you have the skills and the time. This guy obviously has both. Quote
cbfishalot Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 The bait does look good but for $150 I will pass!!!!! Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 If I hit the lottery or were otherwise rich, I'd buy a hundred of those. But, I ain't so... Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 If I were fishing bigger tournaments for more money and it mimicked the forage of a location perfectly I would buy it without hesitation but for the fun fishing and weekend tournaments that I do I wouldn't spend the cash. I'd probably consider it if it was closer to $50 but $150 is way overpriced. Quote

This guy obviously has both. He does a good job of keeping the demand and price high by limiting the supply as well. I'm sure part of it is the time it takes to paint one but if he were putting these up for sale every day, the price would go way down. If I were him, that's the only bait and color I would make until demand slowed down. Quote
Stringjam Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 The baits are for sale every day. You can mail this guy your Spro and he'll paint it that exact same color for less than $20. Check his website, and all the other custom painters.....it isn't that expensive to get a custom paint job.....and that job isn't that advanced in the first place. I always have to laugh at the suckers who fall for this stuff.......I can think of a dozen painters who could pull that off just as well. Oh well.....impatience has a price. Quote

You are right and impatience does have a price and some are just willing to keep going up. I don't think the price started there but the bidding has pushed it to that price. I have gotten most if not all of my custom lures off ebay and think the max I have paid is $12-15 or about the same as a Lucky Craft or some of the other more expensive baits out there. Like you said there are lots of custom painters out there and most of the ones off ebay have other sites. You can send them your lure and they will paint whatever pattern you want from your pic or imagination or there catalog of lures. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 15, 2009 Super User Posted January 15, 2009 Nope, not in this life. Most I have ever forked over for a lure was 18.75 for a swimbait back in the early 90s. Have never been bit on it either. I'll stick with what I have. Quote
madbass Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 This guy has his friends bid up the price! Click on the bid history (number of bids). Notice anything funny about ALL of the bids? You can't tell me that's coincidence! Jack up the price and hope a sucker jumps in! Quote
Jake. Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 If he would say it was in "Sexy Shad" it would be up to $200. : Quote
Mattlures Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Dang maybe I should do some custom painting. Na not right now anyways. I have done some custom painting on other peoples softbaits and I preferr to just paint my own. However If I didnt make my own that might be fun and profitable. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted January 15, 2009 Super User Posted January 15, 2009 Demand dictates the price. Quote

The price started at $.99 and now its upto $152 and looks like the sucker jump in at the right time. Quote
The Next KVD Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 The rules of supply and demand apply here. However, I do believe that friends helping jack up the price may have something to do w/ it. Quote
bnwcrankin Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Yep, alot of those guy's run their baits up on ebay! And like you guy's mentioned that high bidder could just send him one and get it painted for a 10th of the price... CRAZY! I sell to alot of collector's and they will pay pretty good for a nice looking bait. There's a pile of collector's out their. As for the custom thing, I use mine all the time and sometime's their the ticket and sometime's their not! Just a confidence thing. If you know the fish are tearing up the bluegill's at a certain lake, do you want a plain bait with orange on the belly and a spot of blue, or do you want something that totally imitate's them. You guy's ever use any custom plastic's? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted January 16, 2009 Super User Posted January 16, 2009 150 for one bait, no thanks. It better catch a lunker every cast or its not worth it. For that you shouldn't even have to cast. You should be able to just hold it up and the big boys automatically jump in the boat. Quote
