KS_Bassin Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 Did anyone else see this article in the Bass Mag ? The dominating lure in the Elite Sereis wins were the Jig-35.7%, Tubes-14.3%, Soft Stickbaits-14.3%, Creature Baits-21.4%, and other plastics 14.3%. I'm not suprised at all that jigs were number one, as Edwin Evers said in the article "look at the tournament records over the years "jigs are big fish baits". After reading this article i went and looked through my tackle and have more jigs and soft plastics than hardbaits which didnt' suprise me since my "goto" bait is ususally a texas-rigged plastic. Wondering if anyone else is a plastic junkie i hear about "senkos" all the time on this board , but have yet to use one!! -Matt Quote
Guest avid Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 I saw that article and was startled to see that all of the winners were soft plastics. Yes i know a jig is not soft plastic but the trailer is and it's the trailer that draws the strikes more than the jig. I was surprised no crankbaits. I think the pros use crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and other hard fast moving baits to locate fish, then slow down with the jigs and worms. Never tried a Senko? that makes you and Moishe from the Bronx. Get a pack in color 194J or any dark color. wacky rig it. cast to likely cover. catch bass. Quote
CJ Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 It doesn't suprise me at all.Alot of times it is a combination of 2 or 3 lures.Maybe a jig landed most of the winner's fish. Avid,I believe it is the combination of jig and trailer giving the bait a bulkier profile. The rubber strands in the skirt will float around after a jig has hit bottom giving the presentation a soft natural action. But with that said,I feel a jig is worthless with out a trailer.JMO CJ Quote
Curado Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 But with that said,I feel a jig is worthless with out a trailer.JMO CJ I agree, I would have no confidence throwing a jig w/o a trailer. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted February 3, 2007 Super User Posted February 3, 2007 Guilty as charged... I fish soft plastics the vast majority of the time if I'm fishing artificials. This is my second year to really focus on becoming a better jig fisherman, but soft plastics are still my bread & butter. My top three producers are all soft plastics: 6" Senko, Fat Ika, El Gordo tube. Quote
cbfishalot Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 I love fishing a jig and I never go out without one tied on. I fish a finesse jig 90% of the time and I use a craw trailer 80% of the time. Experimenting with jigs and trailers is on my to do list this spring. There is so many ways to fish a jig that it makes them a bait that can be fished all year long. The other bait that I always have tied on is a tube. I mainly fish for smallies and the jig and tube are a must. I use a senko as a situational bait and they a be deadly at times. A senko has a action all of its own and there is no other bait what has its action. Buy a couple of packs of senkos and the bait monkey will be happy and so will you. Quote
Dukhunt22 Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 I fish a lot with a Texas rigged worm. I hear a lot about Senkos and wacky rigging them. Could someone shed a little light my way about WACKY rigging a Senko and HOW to fish a wacky rigged worm. Thanks guys. Chad Quote

Fivebasslimit has good advice. I just started fishing Senkos last year, fished it just like a weightless plastic worm and caught fish with it immediately, no learning curve. Give them a try, you won't regret it. Ronnie Quote
stewart1218 Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 We use the Senkos a lot down here in Bama. I have found that the Tiki Man brand are softer which is the key to the lure IMO. You almost can't hang on to em for the way they wiggle! Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 No way are wave worms (tiki man) softer then senkos! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I use to be a big plastics junkie, but not near as bad anymore. Once I figured out how to fish a jig most of the plastics just sit around now. Since I have started pouring plastics I'm going to start broadening my horizens and fishing more senko style baits, and other plastics. Jigs will still be #1 and plastics are #2. CJ I have to agree with you on the jig/no trailer combo. Except a swim jig that mimics shad.(hair jig) Quote
