C-Rig Baits

What is your favored bait for a Crig?  Many people like to use lizards, but I thought that lizards were a spring time bait, not for August.

What is your favorite color and size for this time of year?

Great question!  

No, lizards are not just for spring.  However, in spring, they really do shine.

When I fish a C-rig, I want a lure that is going to look large, so, I would use 8 in. lizards, 10-12 inc. worms, etc.

If you find that the fish are not reacting to that, go to smaller versions of these lures.

If they are not reacting to regular worms, or lizards, then, try Senkos, or Sweebo worms.

Also, do not be afraid to fish the creature baits on a C-rig.  Especially if you have a strong forage bass of crawfish, use the creature baits.  

Hope that this give you some insight.  Oh yeah, and for this time of year, I fish large lizards 8 in. or larger, and I will also fish creature baits.

The main thing you want is a bait that falls slow (Senkos and GULP Sinking Minnows for instance) but it is also helpful to have a bait that displaces some water as you pull the weight along the bottom.  This will often trigger the fish to come and locate your offering. That is why lizards and other creature baits are used so often on C-rigs.  There really is no right or wrong bait.  I have recently heard of guys tying suspending crankbaits on their C-rigs, but haven't tried this myself.

Just to add to this, I have started using the Zoom Finesse Worms, which are 6 inches in length.

The person that I fished a tournament with in March, on Lake Hartwell, on the GA/SC border used them on a C-rig to catch the 3 fish that we weighed in.

As it was said, there is not a right or wrong lure.  Just experiment, and see what works for you.   ;D

I like creature baits , like the zoom brush hog and gambler ugly otter(basiccaly a beaver), which are my 2 favorites. Zoom finesses worms and lizards are good choices too, .

i like gulp 7" turtle back worms, junebug or watermelon, venom tubes, been known to fish a thunderstick also.

Man, that's the truth.  I use Watermelon Pepper in the Baby Paca Craw, and murder the bass.  The action of the lure is unreal, not to mention the scent.

Gotta watch out for the catfish also.  2nd time using them, I caught a 4 and 8 lb. channel cat, and the 3rd time using it, I busted my All-Star rod that I got 7 years ago, setting the hook on a 55 lbs. channel cat!

Sorry about your rod,but that's funny my boss caught a 46lb. blue cat using the Paca chunk as a jig trailer.Another thing is it's funny how baits that work real well will almost always attract other species.

What was really sad is that, All-Star would not honor the old warranty.  That is, because I did not have the receipt, and I did not have the warranty card, they would not replace the rod.  :-[

So, I am now going to start using Castaway Rods, once I am able to purchase them.  ;D

Anyone have much luck using a trick or floating worm on a crig? it makes sense to me as the bait will float up off of the bottom and be more visible. What colors?

CJHooker...I agree with you, that Paca craw is a new found friend.  I have been catching them on the junebug color tho...I also have been catching some on a Yum Dinger.  I am curious,  I am fish moving water at the mouth of a river that has alot of water running, what size weigh do you use??? Thanks

Hey Phool, I use the Baby Paca Craw almost exclusively.  I use it on a 2/0 EWG hook with a 3/16 oz. weight.  Nothing sweeter!   ;D

If you are fishing water with moving water, I would up the weight to just enough to keep in contact with the bottom.
