Started fishin Bass About 4 weeks ago.

Man am I glad I found this place cause I've got a million questions.

The first one is; Is there a place on the net that has "pictures" of the correct way to rig different baits? Right now I'm mainly interested in soft plastic's, like the correct way to rig a tube, But also I'm not 100% sure on the rigging of the jig & pig either.

Up until 4 weeks ago I hadn't been fishing at all for at least 10 years, I haven't been fresh water fishing for probably 25 years. Up until 4 weeks ago I had never fished Bass.

I'm fishing small ponds and lakes in south Texas and of course it's extremely hot so I've only been able to catch fish in the mornings for an hour or so around sunrise and then for about an hour or so around sun down.

I go every day (bank fishing) and I generally catch 6 or 7 in the mornings and then the same in the evenings.

They have all been small mouth Bass and they have all only been 12 or 13 inches, (have yet to catch a keeper).

As I said, I have a million questions, and I can't possibly list all of them in one post, so I figured I would start at the beginning and make sure that I'm rigging my bait right.

Catching 6 or 7 every outing bank fishing is a pretty good start. I can't even come close to that.

However, I think a good place to start is to check out the beginner's section on this site.

Thanks for the reply, and yes I've read the beginners section, learned a great deal by the way, but there were no pic's showing the proper way to rig the baits I mentioned.

I didn't figure I was really doing any good because every thing I caught was undersized. I was thinking that the only reason I couldn't catch a keeper was because I am a beginner, I've been catching these little ones from day one.

One reason I'm able to catch so many of these little ones is because these lakes are really over grown so there is a lot of cover and most of it is reachable even from the bank. Plus I do not just sit in one place, I'm constantly walking around the edges.

Buy yourself some DVD's from Bass Pro Shops. Also check out Bass Center every Saturday on ESPN2. Keep reading the articles on this site and checking out this forum.

Some suggestions to consider:

Suscribe to magazines such as Bassin, Bass Times and Bassmaster.

Attend Bassmaster University.

Purchase these videos:  Bigmouth, Bigmouth Forever and Feeding Habits of Bass.

Check out the videos and DVDs at Bass Pro Shop.

Order the Bass Pro Shop Catalog.

Visit local tackle shops and find out what others are purchasing and where they are fishing.

Got to www.bassmaster.com for a lot of information.

Join a bass club.

And best of all, just go out and fish and experiment.

Bass Wisdom by Homer Circle and Baits for Bass by Wade L. Bourne, senior writer for Bassmaster Magazine.

Bass Wisdom will show you how to rig various baits.

Search the web for fishing sites.  There are may.

Check out Woo Daves site plus Hank Parker's site.  

Invest some money and go with a fishing guide and tell him you are just beginning and he can show and tecah you a lot of information.

It takes time but in one or two years you will be up to speed with everyone else.

You could try to do a search on here or look through the past posts what you are interested in.  I know I have seen some good pictures that people have loaded to show like a wacky rig and I am sure others.  There were some posts very recently that had links that showed various ways to rig a Yamamato kreature bait and that would basicly be the same, as with the rigging some others.   Normally I would look around alittle but this computer is acting up so I might ought to round up a hammer and a couple of pipe wrenches before it locks.

Here's my 2 cents.

To fish soft plastics, learn to tie a Palomar knot.  It's easy, strong and most of the pros use it.

If you can find someone to fish with that has more experience than you it will help a great deal.  I started playing much better golf when I played with people better than myself.  Now I am learning a lot more about fishing because I fish with a bunch of tournament fisherman.

Texas rig:

Step 1. Penetrate the head of your soft plastic lure with your hook tip

Step 2. Pull the point of the hook through the bottom of your lure aproximately 1/4 inch below the head

Step 3. Before turning the hook around and re-inserting it into the plastic, visually check to see where the penetration should occur

Step 4. After re-inserting the tip of your hook into the lure your finished Texas rig should look something like this

In a nutshell, you need 2 things: a buddy to fish with who can show you the ropes, and a subscription to Bassmaster mag. I was a total newbie; didn't know a grub from a senko until I began subscribing to Bassmaster when I was about 13. I can't tell you how much it helps!

I stared a couple of years ago and i found myself in this site. The first thing you need to do just start reading the begginers articals, it will help you alot. Then start looking for anwsers to general questions in either "featured articals" or "seasonal articals." Then if you still have questions thats what this forum is for. Well your in for alot fo fun and some work but its all worth it. And you found the right place, this is a good enviorment to get a begining fisherman on his feet. It sure helped me. I live in Victoria, I have a brother that lives in San Antonio.

I've been catching most of my Bass with a Lit'l Fish, made by Creme. I really like these little rubber fish but found that I have better luck with them if I use a smaller jig head than the one that is supplied.

I've also been doing real good with a small crappie spinner with a red and white jig on it, or sometimes a black and white jig.

I tried the Carolina Rig today and was pleasantly suprised. First cast, I went to reel in the slack and I just kept getting more slack, it was moving towards me so fast that I almost couldn't get it reeled in fast enough to set the hook. It still was not a keeper but it was the largest one so far that I landed 13 1/2"

I found a 12' flat bottom Jon boat today that I am picking up tomorrow so I'm betting I'll be catching some larger Bass real soon as there are several places that I am unable to reach from the bank but look like they should be real good.

re the small bass you have to experiment some just try different lures smaller ones and larger ones. I have found lately though that during this 2 month long high 90's and 100's heat the bass along shore have been small. A lot of wht I have read has said that more fish in warmer ( not hot) water but very big possible in cooler even cold water. I've caught a 4 or 5 17 & 18 inchers but has been much harder when hot temps.

Not an expert so just my 2 cents worth.
