huskertko Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I am going out tonight after work until dark, and was thinking of taking my spinning gear, rigging it up with a nightcrawler and just let it set while I fish a C-rig or something else on another rod. I guess I am going through a "drought" so to speak, not catching much in this Kansas heat, so i thought maybe I could increase my chances by possibly catching some bluegill or crappie. Anyone else fish for crappie or bluegill while fishing for bass? Quote
Red_neck_LS Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Actually i do quite often. I rig up a ultra lite spinning set up and put on a good ole hook and worm and let it sit., while i throw out the spinnerbaits ect... for the big boys. Quote
playmaker47 Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 yea this Kansas heat is somthing isnt it! i fish for bluegill all the time. i really dont like live bait, because i think its cheating. alot of people probably dissagree, but thats just my oppinion. i catch alot of bluegill when i dropshot a small 1" long crappie tube. goldenmonkey Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I fish with live bait every now and again when im looking for some fish to eat. usually a droped shot rig with a bull minnow. catch the hell out of white perch in the evenings, usually catch a few bass in the process as well. Ive tried what your saying too, working a jig or a crig, but its too much action on live bait to put the rod down. more of a pain than anything Quote
Hookhead Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 First off, I'm in California and the summer heat is running its usual course. I've thought of doing the same thing you guys are talking about only with carp. I can't count how many times I've been pounding the shores looking for bass when a GIANT carp slowly rolls along the water's edge mouthing everything within its reach. Quote
Muddpuppy Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 Juglines or throwlines are anouther option if legal in your area. Quote
Will Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I used to try that then I had a rod take a permanent drink. Quote
utser Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 do it all the time, sometimes do better on the live bait rig. Quote
Hula_King Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Yes, it seems I do that quite often really. Mostly, I try this when I'm sitting out on the dock. It's nice to cast out and try my luck with the bass, and haul in a decent size crappie on the other line. I usually use minnows when using live bait. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 About the only action I've got going is nightcrawlers at night for catfish. Quote
fireandice Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 Lot's of good ideas here...and I can vouch for all of them in KS. I like the 1" crappie tubes. Haven't tried dropshotting them, but I will now. Live minnows are always a good idea. Pink minnows if they're available in your area. Right now from what I've seen in my area... with no rain lately and all the heat, I believe the thermocline is pretty high. Pushing the fish pretty shallow to find sufficient oxygen. I've been doing well in about 3 to 6 feet of water along riprap and weedlines. Jigs, spinnerbaits, t-rigs...they all seem to be producing decent numbers lately. Good luck. Don't fish deep. I made that mistake for several days without a bite. Not enough oxygen down there. I've even been catching nice channel cat in 2-4 feet of water in the same areas. Quote
sinker48 Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 If I have A way to secure a second pole I put life bait on most of the time it is A nightcrawler and A leech catch as many bass on that rig as I do with lures. Good Luck! Sinker48 Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 huskertko, playmaker47, Will, fireandice, Was out yesterday (7/03) (81° air temp at 6:00am) morning....... Fireandice is right the thermocline is up high. In about 2' of water we are getting 81° temp readings. The local bite is way off with everything we got to the boat being in the 15" range from out of windy point rocks.... They have stuffed themselves into the rocks. Took (spinner baits, white/chart, nickel double colorado's) with a lot of thump, swimming the with the surface currents, and letting them fall right over the points. The bites came on the fall...... ;D No real time to lay a rod with small baits over the side. The fish aren't using any real energy now.... Can't wait for the heat to break and fall to get here...... bassguy Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 i wouldnt recommend doing that unless u have the rod in ur hand because i have had too many rods dragged into the water by lunker bass. the cool thing is i always got em back with the fish still on ;D Quote
Guest avid Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 I have tried that a couple of times, but I could never keep my mind on both rigs, so if I feel like pitching a nitecrawler or minnow, I just fish the one line at a time. PS I think it's a real Hoot that allot of bassfisherman think that live bait is cheating. I once had this discussion with a guy. He was in a $35,000.00 Triton, loaded with all the latest electronics bitchin' about the poor folk on the bank using live bait and not giving the fish a "sporting" chance. Some people............ :-* Quote
