Top water Frogs...

Yesterday I bought a top water frog and went fshing late in the evening around 8:45 and threw it in some weeds. I got a bite and went to set the hook, and my line snapped.

I looked at my line and my not was still intact but where the lline was tied onto snapped.  Why did this happen?  ( I had 10lb test)

Is there a correct way to set the hooks on these lures?

I looked through the archives and there isnt much on them.

I ALWAYS use braid when fishing a frog.  I fish them in really heavy matted grass or lily pads.  You really have to let the bass have it before you set the hook.  I say that only land somewhere around 2 out of 3 of the bites I get.  It's just hard when you see somethig explode on it not to set the hook, but it is a must.

Why braid?  First off it cuts through the grass much better than mono.  Also you might only catch a 5 lbs. bass, but that bass more than likely will have 10lbs. of grass that comes along with it.  I wouldn't throw anything less than 20 lbs. mono, but I think you would be better off with braid.

When did you tie the knot? A few times this year I have set the hook on my first fish of the day only to have it break off on the set. It is then that I relize that I tied the knot the day before.

How old is your line? Has it been sitting in the sun for a couple of hours? Did you wet the line before you tighten the knot? These are just some of the questions you sould be asking yourself.

Fishing Frog's is my all time favorite way to fish. The line that I would recommend is Braid like the others said. 10 pound test is not a strong enough line for throwing Frog's. When i tie my Frog on before I tighten the know all the way down I wet it and add a drop of Super Glue. I really cinch the knot down tight. What Frog were you using? The Snag Proof "Bobby's Perfect Frog" is by far the best Frog on the market IMO. I't comes in 8 good looking colors and it come with a Gamakatsu Frog hook so you don't have to change it. When you get a strike wait until you feel pressure then set the hook, set it hard. When you've got the fish hooked really put it on him and get him on top of the vegetation and to the boat ASAP. If the fish is 5+ pounds it's very strong and if you give it time it will get donw and bury itself in the vegetation. This is not good because the vegetation is heavy, atleast the stuff I fish in is. Once you get the habg of setting the hook it will become an insticnt inside you and you'll know when to set the hook. Usually whne they hit the frog they get it all the way in their mouth or in the roof of it and the hooks penetrate out. When the fish wants the Frog bad enought it will really eat it and come through alot ot get to it. God luck with your Frog fishing as it is one of the funnest techniques to fish.

I'd investigate along the lines of what's been suggested. Something had to be wrong for the line to break on the hookset.

Heavier line would probably be better for frogs, but that doesn't mean that 10# line should break when it did. Using too light a line might mean you don't drive the hooks in past the barb or maybe you don't bring the fish out of the weeds, but still shouldn't break line on the hookset.

I love fishing with frogs but just haven't had any luck since my last "Bill Plummers Superfrog" went to froggie heaven.  I bought a bobbys perfect frog in brown bullfrog color.  I hear they are the best, don't know about the color.  I was tempted to try white becuase it would be very visible.  Anyone use a White Frog?

No, never tried a white frog. I'm sure they'd be ok since I have caught bass on white mice. But nowadays I throw dark topwaters like black or dark green. Hasn't really made a difference in one way or other.

My line is only about 2 weeks old I just changed it and the know was about 5 minutes old if that.

I've been using a white Strike King Grass Frog with good results, but I can't see a difference in number of strikes with that versus chartreuse, pumpkinseed and other colors.
