What is your favorite typ of structure and why?

Pending on the season,but overall I like the rocks. I have caught my biggest fish of rocks.I feel it has several reasons for being great structure.First in the earliest parts of spring the fish on my lake go to rocks to warm when the water temps are still low.Two, rocks are the most ancient form of structure in most lakes.They are also the most common stucture in deep water(10 ft.+),this is where I search for large bass 75% of the season.Three I can fish it more cleanly than grass and other structures eventhough rocks can be very hangy.And last,that where I usually find those agressive smallmouth that I love to catch.

OK, logs, weeds, docks, grass...these are cover not structure.

Humps, ledges, creek channels, bluffs..these are structure.

Favorite of either? Whatever I find the fish on.

Same for baits, my favorite is what I am catching fish on at the time.

Now my confidence areas to fish are grassbeds on a dropoff of some type. Grass close to or on a depth change usually means fish sometime during the day. If I cannot find fish any where else, I will look for fish here.

If there is no grass in the lake, like where I will be this weekend, I'll be looking for wood or rocks on a dropoff and fish there if I cannot find anything else.

I notice most guys that fish a bunch -  the confusion of 'cover' versus structure -  is a real pet peeve.    

Like the response above...wood, logs, grass, weeds, docks ARE cover.  Humps, channels, ledges, depressions, roadbeds, bluffs ARE structure.

I wish the bass were in the 8 inch to 4 feet of water year round, but it just isn't that way, and I guess if it was, EVERYONE would love bass fishing.

It's not a pet peeve, but it is something that causes some anglers to actually miss out on fishing success.

A guy who joined our club was pretty new to bass fishing.  He would fish just any ol' grassbed, stumps, laydowns, standing timber, rocks, etc.  If he saw it, he fished it.  It was structure he said and thats where he had always read to fish, the structure.  If there some fish there, he would catch some, if not, skunkville.

Once he understood the concept of cover and structure, seasonal patterns, etc., he then concentrated on fishing the same cover, but only the cover on the most likely structure holding the fish.  Since then, he has become a very good bass fisherman, caught a lot more fish and has even won some club tourneys.

Cover is important to largemouth but has very little to do with smallmouth. I know there are exceptions, I've caught a couple of nice smallies fishing in grass for largemouth, but generally, smallmouth are all about structure and on a river, current.

Since most of my fishing is on a river, my favorite structure is big boulders. I also target rock piles and transition, especially channel drops, ledges, humps and deep pools.

I avoid cover, creeks and still water when I'm smallmouth fishing. That's where those nasty largemouth hang out and steal your bait! But if you want a combination and some great action, you might want to focus some of your time on those spots on the river, too.

Strucure are orographic and topgraphic features, they were there when the lake was built ( in manmade lakes ) or when the lake was created ( natural lakes ), structure can be natural or man made.

The best places are where two structural features meet, where cover is located very close or on structure or where two types of cover meet.
