U.W BronzeBack Hunter Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Just looking for an additive to protect my reels. About a week ago, i posted a thread about car wax on reels, but then i found out car wax has a ton of abrasive microparticles that scratch (better word - buff) the paint of anything you apply it on, making the finish of the reel look more lusterous. But i didn't like the idea of the "microscopic scratches" part of the whole deal, so it's a no go anyways (enough with that rant), I've been looking through past threads and people are saying KVD is water based and Real Magic is petrol based. Seeing how petrol (basically oil) is not miscible with water, shouldn't RM last longer on reel surfaces then KVD which is water based (meaning the main solvent used is water.... and seeing how water in water becomes..... water.... wouldn't it wash off really quickly????). I totally agree now that KVD is better with line conditioning, but i'm beginning to have second thoughts about its effectiveness on reels and rods surfaces. thank you, and your opinions will be much appreciated ;D Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted January 9, 2009 Super User Posted January 9, 2009 Neither of those were designed for or claim to protect your reel. If you are looking for something to protect the looks of your reel then a reel cover is the only way to go. If you are looking for something to protect the functionality of your reel then keep it clean and oil it regularly. Quote
Super User CWB Posted January 9, 2009 Super User Posted January 9, 2009 Neither claims to be a real lube or protectant. Reel Magic is more like WD-40 and will give your reel a degree of protection. KVD is more for line conditioning and I have found it does a better job for this purpose, especially on flourocarbons which can be stiff. Also, there is no residue as with Reel Magic which does leave a very slight amount. The best solution IMO is regular maintainance. Cleaning, oiling, greasing etc. where shown in instructions. You cannot expect one product to do it all. Then at years end, if you are handy, break down all your reels and clean and oil them correctly. I have a Diawa SM2A Baitcaster that I love and it has lasted me 30 years doing this. Also have several older Ambassedeurs and Millionaires that still work flawlessly. That being said, the bait monkeys cousin- the tackle monkey, still gets me for a reel or 2 every year. :-/ Quote
