bassackwards Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 alright folks... I hope y'all don't get tired of hearin me ask about why I ain't catchin fish. There's a quote that goes like this, "the same mind that created the problem, cannot fix the problem." anyhow, maybe after a while I'll catch on and get the hang (even just a little bit) on fishin... I went fishin in my pond, its a really small small pond, but I put some fish in there and well.. I know there are fish in there. its water level will forever be lower than it normally used to be because water on one side of the pond found its way through and out the other side, now there's a HUGE hole there. ok, so its 12:30 - 1:20pm. -I tried a 6" or 7" zoom cottoncandy/chart tail lizard, weightless. Nothing. -I tried a zoom white pearl fluke/chart tail weightless, nothing. -and then put on a beatle spin with some blue specle/chart tails, nothing. the water is clear, when the wind blows the funk on the top of the water away, hah. like pollen, etc. now, I've caught fish in here last year, on a pumpkinseed lizard by strikeking. and so they bite on lizards. the only thing about it is, the water level is lower now. its warm, plus a small pond, so water temp can't be too cold. I fancasted the whole pond, so I must be running my bait upside their head. I'm taking my time, and as well as fishing the bait quicker. --------------------------------- I'm just wondering if my problem catching fish in lakes may be tied to why I have a problem catching fish in my small *** pond? I don't know, and I could reallllllly use y'alls help. Quote
bassin4life Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 Could be but....you said you have a really small pond so there eating habbits are deffinatley diff then the lake...does your pond have any cover and just how big is the pond you're fishing? ??? Quote
Pond-Pro Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 Â Â Â Try downsizing your lures. Use light line and maybe a gub on a jig head. If you can not catch bass try for bluegill. Use the smallest hook you can find, and some crappie nibbels, or live bait. Â Before you can catch fish, you have to be fishing; where there is fish to catch. Quote
bassackwards Posted April 16, 2005 Author Posted April 16, 2005 erm... I typed some stuff and it didn't go through, I dont remember/nor feel like typing it all again... ----------------- basically what I said was, I am beginning to think there is some telepathy I am missing in communicating to the fish how good the bait is and how he is going to eat the bait or else die... from something. its a very small pond. there's a stump in one corner, and some laydowns in that same corner under the water. the water is about 2 feet at its deepest. one side has a hole that is causing this. I wanted to get some nice sized bass out and some other fish I may catch and throw 'em in another lake. the pond probly wont last long if we have a drought. then I realized, I am not catching any fish at all. what a realization, its one I have many times a day. but its a really small pond, I must be bumpin these fish in the head. it may be my presentation. I dont know. I work the bait fast/medium speed/very slow. please tell me I am not thinking to the fish right, therefore I am not tempting them to bite the bait. this I can work on. sigh, but please help regardless. this is a problem I deal with everywhere I fish. not just lakes or small *** ponds. ??? BassMaster Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 they've been biting a slow rolling spinnerbait the past few weeks... i recommend a chartreuse/white with willow blades. Â after the past two nights, i will forever recommend chartreuse/white to anybody. Â next time you go fishing at that pond though, for no bigger than it is, the average bass in there is probably about 2 pounds... so i recommend a 4" watermelon seed lizard on a 3/8 oz weight... just downsize everything. Â maybe even try texas rigging a finnesse worm... something around the size the bass are looking for. Quote
bassin4life Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 Yeah I agree that spinner bait helped me catch many over 2pounds this year ;D Quote
bassackwards Posted April 17, 2005 Author Posted April 17, 2005 well, around 6:30 this morning I went out and tossed a top water lure. Â sat for a second, popped it. Â and caught a nice bass. then around 2 -3pm, sat and didn't catch a thing until 6ish. Â but oh well. Â I'm goin tomorrow some time. Quote
BassMaster Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 topwater during the day isn't the most ideal thing to do when you're trying to catch fish... me and bassin4life caught around 10 today off of slow rolling spinnerbaits... so try using a spinnerbait... they're already hitting topwater? Â man, i fished with a buzzbait for about an hour around 7:00 tonight and not even a nibble. Â maybe it's b/c your pond is smaller and heats up faster Quote
Hot n Tot Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 You say that the pond is only two feet deep, very small, and clear. Â If this is the case, you may be spooking the fish from the bank. Â Try staying back several feet from the edge of the water and making a few cast. Â Also, try fishing smaller lures, H&H spinnerbaits, 4" worms, etc. Â The fish in this small pond are probably accustomed to small forage and a larger bait would be unnatural. Quote
Lunkers0 Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 Are you fishing with the right end of the pole? Quote
MyKeyBe Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 I wanted to get some nice sized bass out and some other fish I may catch and throw 'em in another lake. the pond probly wont last long if we have a drought. Be patient, Grasshoppa! Wait till you get that drought and the water is only about six inches deep. You should be able to go in there and grab all the fish you want! Â ;D Quote
Chris Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 I guess all I can tell you is fish it often and you might catch the fish in the right mood to bite. Quote
BassMaster Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 did you try again today? Â if so, any luck? Â me and bassin4life went out for about an hour and a half today... not a single thing... not even a bite. Â i think the fish are getting smart... about 5 weeks with a spinnerbait, catching something every time we go out... hmmm... sounds like they're getting smart to me Quote
bassackwards Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 I went out fishin sunday. Â Caught 4 dinks and my dad caught 1. Â They were all in cover and shallow. Â SCHOOLS of them. Â but couldn't catch as many as I wished to catch. Â donno why they stopped biting. I think it was because I lost 4 lures and started running out of beetlespins. I think the bass at this small lake are starting to spawn. Quote
Phishn_Phool Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Try getting some confidence for the fisherman...you are beating yourself up...cheer up and try it some night with a spinnerbait Quote
BassMaster Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 oh i know what it's like to lose your baits... i think anybody knows... i just lost 5 really nice spinnerbaits last week fishing... but i also landed 10 bass, one was 4 1/2 pounds... so it's not all that bad... sometimes you gain something after losing, and sometimes you lose something after gaining something big... if that makes no sense, i'm sorry, i'm a wee bit tired :-/... but yeah, confidence with a bait is what's gonna make you catch fish. Quote
bassin4life Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 tell me about it I lost my dern quad shad  when a bass took it right off my line think i had a frail....damit.... Quote
J.T. Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I have a really small pond on my cousins farm I fish regurally. The bite will change really fast. I know there are some hogs in this pond but can never get them to bite. Only thing I have been able to get a consistant bite on is a pink senko texas rigged. Always Always get a reaction from the fish. Also try a Black with blue flack 5 3/4" gycb cuttail texas rigged. good luck Quote
GobbleDog Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Gauranteed pond buster bait: Zoom Swamp Crawler - 1/0 worm hook - 1/32 oz bullet weight. Finess fishing at it's best. Can't miss. Â Quote
bassinchik Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 I fish only artificial bait, but this would be one time that I would try LIVE BAIT. Â Â Maybe this would entice the fish to bite. Â Â It would be worth a try. Â Â It would help you to at least locate the fish. Quote
gamblerOH Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 I would go with what noluckfishin said and wait til that baby got really low and get you a net! If you still cant catch'em then i would say maybe the fish are not the problem-----LOL Quote
TommyBass Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Maybe when the hole broke open it just sucked em all out and away... maybe the nearest creek will hold some of them bass   ... but in all seriousness you should use something small that catches fish anywhere like a jointed rapala, beetle spin was a good try, um some crappie jigs, any of those lures you give little kids to fish with.... now as far as bigger lakes go thats probably not the best idea.  Try different things and learn from everything.  If you still have problems make a notebook.  Stick with basics, dont cook steak if you cant make hamburgers if you know what i mean.... and the worst part is mental... id say its at least 80% of your fishing, if you go out thinkin you wont catch fish you probably wont... persistence and presence of mind are the key... hope that helps Quote
Lunkers0 Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 What's that old saying? Â 75% of fishing is half mental...or something along those lines. Quote
bassackwards Posted April 30, 2005 Author Posted April 30, 2005 thanks tommybass, I think I know what u mean, my deal is knowing whether to fish deep or shallow. Â not having a depth finder plays a key in fishin deep. Â in a small lake though, well, I won't try to over think it. Quote
TommyBass Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Fishin deep can be rough w/out a depth finder but not impossible.  Say you have high pressure situation or bright sunlight or post spawn or hot days, something that you know sends fish deep, concentrate on how teh bank looks.  Many times the bank continues its look right on down into the watter.  Fish out on points that look like they run out into the lake and they almost always drop off wel enough off the side to hold fish.  If its cloudy or lower pressure or any of the things that bring fish up try goin shallow.  Concentrate on structure etc till you get the hang of other techniques. No one always knows where they are and how to catch em or this website wouldnt exist.  Overthinkin is a problem but you can under think to, dont go whippin lures out and not payin attention, that can set ya back  (sometimes though it catches the most fish) Quote
