Does anyone have some good tips for catching farm pond bass?

The small pond below my house is about 3 acres. Most of the bass that I have caught are on smaller lures. Most of the ones in the pond are 1lb and under with a few goin almost 2lbs. I have used compact spinnerbaits with #2  & #3 blades to represent the small bait fish in this pond. I use the compact spinnerbaits so I can get a 3/8 & 1/2 oz model for longer cast. I trim and thin the skirts to make a smaller profile as well. Also the Strike King Wild Thing Jr. has landed many fish over the summer last year. A Rapala minnow style works well for a jerk bait also.

Walk softly and stay quiet.

Fan cast and cover as much water as you can before you move.  If you reach all of the pond from one position (without moving) even better.

If it's a small pond, you've caught a couple of fish, and they stop biting, then eat a sandwich and wait for a little while.  They'll start biting again.

Use bigger lures. You don't know if there are big fish in the pond or not. I catch monsters in heavily fished public parks and farm ponds. Most guys are fishing for brim and catfish or throwing spinners and little lures like you are. Specifically, I use 6" Senkos weightless. I also have tremendous success with Fat Ikas. One more tip: Walk the bank and fish parallel to it, about 5-10 ft out and fish slooooooooooooooow.

If you see alot of surface action from the bluegills that might be expecting a feeding from the pond owner, its hard to beat one of those miny black buzz baits.

Locate the water source for this pond or at least where the water runs in when it rains, try a horny toad or sizmic frog cast to where the water enters and work the bait out slowly. This usually works for me, if no try a shallow crank in bream colors or super fluke.

Around here the best baits for ponds are:

1. Texas rigged worm (fished around any cover)

2. Buzzbait (parallel to the bank)

3. Jitterbug (no brainer in a pond)

4. Senko (throw it anywhere on the pond)

5. shallow running crankbait (if pond is not over run with algae) Mann's Baby1- is a good one.

I catch a LOT of fish on Senko's and the K&E pre-rigged worms in the ponds around my area.  Especially like the black with white stripe or the  Orange K&E's.  Senko's normally the 5" in a color that matches the water/bottom of the pond.  The K&E's can be killers when retrieved slowly... catch the occasional hand sized blue-gill on them too...

I fish a 1 acre private pond alot and have great success with bigger lures (like the Warrior said).  The average size fish in there is about 1lb, but I caught 2 over 4lbs and a 61/2 in there.  I use 5 and 6 inch senkos, 6 inch lizards and a Luckycraft Sammy.  I'm also having good luck with one of Warrior's favorite lure - The Fat Ika.  Good Luck!

         I agree with the previouse posts. Things that I would like to add:

     1. Dont let the fish know your around.

       2.  Rapala original floating minnow. size 11 or 13

       3.  4 inch senko, 1/0 EWG hook.

        4. Buzzbait

I have 7 ponds between 1 and 10 acres and fish them all from the bank. Walk slowly, and fish every inch of it. Smaller baits work well in early spring, but by mid summer throw the biggest lures you have at them. In Summer night fishing is best. If the pond is yours, start culling out bass under 1lb or they just grow slow and become over populated.

I gotta agree with roadwarrior on this one...Use the bigger lures.  I love fishing ponds because you are almost guaranteed some fish.  This is why I take my wife and son there... They throw tiny H&H spinner baits and catch a lot of fish but no big ones.  We went this past friday, they both caught 10 in like 30 mins.  I caught 1 but he was 8lbs!!!  10" Lake Fork Tackle worm in "blue bruiser" color. ;D

The ponds I fish here in Kentucky like small stump jumpers and roadrunners, It seems to trigger strikes from smaller panfish, then the race is on for the bigger fish,which one gets to it first.

I also like to fish the Mann's Augertail, in the black and silver combo, which they don't make any more... My favorite is the smallest Rebel Minnow they make. I take the tail (hair) off the back of the treble hook and tie my not high on the eyelet and twitch it about 6 inches below the surface. If your knot isn't ridin' high on the eyelet you won't get the sub-surface action. It's Hot! :-*

Hit the obvious points first.  Structure in the water, moss edge, points, etc.  Then stay with what is working...you will catch more fish by staying with what you are catching fish on.  If you are talking pond bass, try the big lures first and always to see if the big dogs are out, but if that doesn't work, them scale down the shadow and jerk baits, etc.

crankbaits are one of the best pond lures, make sure it is a small one. also like i say all the time, the banjo minnow, if you see a bass, throw the banjo minnow, you will catch that bass GARUNTEED. also small worms and what i recentl learned is the split shotting small worms small split shot . excellent

o yeah, one more i do a aaron martens. use a road runner head and put on a fluke body. cast out , let i sink to the bottom, and reel in slowly . jump it every once in a while.
