bassinchik Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 I have tired to research this, but have not found an answer yet..... My husband, Rattlinrogue, caught 2 bass (12.2 lbs. and 10.5 lbs) on consecutive days, same location, and same time of day. One had YELLOW eyes and the other had BLACK eyes. Why is this? Most of our bass here in south Mississippi have black eyes. Anyone got any ideas? Thx! Quote
bassin4life Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 the vegitation on color of the water has a lot to do with eye color....not including some bad chemicals in water can change a bass's eye color.....you can tell a male from female by eye color...dark brown is female light brown its a male...hope this helps a little ;D Quote
Nick_Barr Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 I have heard it has to do with the amount of sunlight and the way that you look at their eyes. I have never really noticed though? Quote
GobbleDog Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 ??? Could be just a natural variation. Who knows. Quote

Did Rolland Martin tell you that? Quote
bassinchik Posted May 9, 2005 Author Posted May 9, 2005 The 12.2 was indeed an accurate weight. The bass was weighed within seconds of leaving the water (I was there and took the pic). The thing that is not apparent in the pic is the thickness of the "shoulders" for lack of a better word. The bass's chest area was as thick as a large roast. The length was 26.5", but the size of the chest was unbelieveable! His/her chest could not be spanned buy a man's two hands. The shape was unusual in that the length did not correspond with the thickness. I am sorry that you felt the need for such sarcasm in questioning the weight. Quote

GobbleDog Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Busted. :-[ Ok, I'm sorry Bassinchik. Nice fish. Quote
bassinchik Posted May 9, 2005 Author Posted May 9, 2005 Thank you Glenn. I am a very classy lady and do not desire to be put through such. I had hoped that this forum was different from so many others that I have frequented. We have no reason to try to tell tales to impress. We never even take a fish from the lake (no trophies on our walls)...strictly catch and release. The only reason I supplied the link was to give the pic of the eye color, not to be given the 5th degree. Quote
D.Taylor Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 With the eye color on them 2 bass being 2 different colors one is dead. I always thought bucks bad brown eyes and females had black but that theory was thrown out thursday when i caught a 3 lb fish full of eggs with brown eyes. Quote
bassinchik Posted May 9, 2005 Author Posted May 9, 2005 Thank you D. Taylor. That explanation makes perfect sense. The only fish that we have taken from the lake in 20 yrs. was the one with yellow eyes and I didn't notice the eyes until we returned home.. I took the pic when we arrived home (forgot my cam on the trip). Thanks for the info.! Quote
one4gatr Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 12.2 lbs.... ??? no way. How was this weight determined? Did Rolland Martin tell you that? I thought this comment was pretty funny myself. I am often a victim of misunderstanding in the written form because it doesnt allow you the inflection of humor. Never the less I think many people who look at the picture would question the same. As far as eye color I have seen mild variations in the black and brown and the occasional white (dead) eye but never a yellow eye on a live fish. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 9, 2005 Super User Posted May 9, 2005 Great fish and nice pics! I am pretty sure all BIG bass are female. As I recall, males rarely exceed 5 lbs. Now it's your turn to catch a bigun. I have never seen a bass with yellow eyes, that's interesting. Check with the DOW (DNR), I'm sure someone there will have the answer and maybe you will share it with us. Quote
