Lure Retrievers

I do all of my fishing from the bank and I seem to be getting hung up alot with crankbaits and spinners, thus becoming very expensive.   I have seen lure retrievers on several websites, but I assume that like most things, they are primarily suited for boat fishing and not bank fishing.

Am I correct or will they work from the bank as well?

The extendable pole type retriever probably will work the best if you get lures caught in low hanging trees.  The knock off or weighted type might help in some instances.  Both versions can be home made with little trouble.

Most of my hang ups are generally out of reach of the pole type retreiver.

How would i go about making one?

Your best bet from shore is to use the replacement rings for your treble hooks. I believe they are available from Basspro shops. You swap them out with the factory rings and when you get snagged you can pull on the bait and the ring will spread. All you loose is the treble hook.

thanks, that would be much cheaper replacing hooks as opposed to the entire lure.

Well I def would want a boat if it was impossible to fish the bank but I dunno, man the bank can be a good factor during warm weather most fish will be all over the banks and the big boys come out also for thei first meal of the begging of warmer weather...like try getting out in your yard and practice your cast it helps me all the time ;D

hm.  be nice if there was somethin u would slide down ur line and when it hits the bait it would pop it off.  until u need it, it would attach to the top eyering.

I needa invent that.

now those hook rings dont come off with big fish I assume?

I fish the banks of a canal that's loaded with rocks and I get hung frequently. The type of retriever that has a weight slide down the line did not work at all for me, since it's sliding down at an angle. Then I got a telescoping retriever which works great, but that's only because the vast majority of my snags were within its range, 20 feet.

already been done... take a snap swivel, put a drop shot weight on there and then put the swivel on your line and let it fall down... the weight will hit your bait and set you free

Even though I fish alot from the bank I use the hound dog lure retriever which has paid itself back many times over. Heres a link to where you can see what they look like.

I agree with Will.  I've used the hound dog retriever for years.  It cost me about $6 and has saved me five times that in lures.  There are even newer ones that have chains attach to them to hang on your treble hooks and allow you to yank it up even if the retriever doesn't knock it loose.  Be sure you put strong enough line on it though.  I use nylon cord (I think about #200).  I once saw an idea in Bassin' magazine about using a spark plug as a lure retriever.

Man, $3.99 for the lure retreiver on the website!  I paid BPS 2 more dollars for mine!  It's still worth it.

AND  I have used it from the bank before with some success.  It just doesn't work with t-rigged plastics.

I have fished from the bank for years and I came to the decided that there is no perfect lure retriever. If I don't want to loose it I won't fish with it. I tell you what. I sure got good with plastic worms.

I did a product review for a lure retriever 2 or 3 years ago. It was called the Go-Get-It. I believe the website was www.mygogetit.com.

It worked very well. When I was testing it I was fishing a deep diving Lucky Craft bait over a brush pile in 12-15 feet of water. The Go-Get-It saved me about 4-5 baits in one day (thats $60-$75). Ever since then I have kept that lure retriever in my boat.
