AOY Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 What are your favorite tactics for fishing from the back? How about if your partner's on a tear from the front of the boat, one after another, and he does this by pitching and flipping EVERY SINGLE hole in the weedline. Not complaining, I'm just glad to be there, but how do I catch fish? I either cast back out towards the lake and reel in like I was fishing from the bank or cast to the rear and it's almost like trolling. Or do I use a different color tube or jig and fish the same holes right behind him. And trust me, he doesn't miss a hole! I am learning a lot though. Can't wait till I get my own boat so I can be in front sometime! Quote
clooney Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 I would either pitch a completely different bait than him or switch to a different method. Say he is flipping a jig.... I would flip a kreature bait or a different color jig. Maybe I would switch it up some and use a spinnerbait or crankbait. Be your own boss and be unique! Just because the person up front is catching fish with one lure or method doesnt mean another method won't work.(Possibly even better!) Quote
coldsteel Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 ask him nicely to bypass a few holoes for you! Cant hurt to ask! ;D Quote
gamblerOH Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 If i'm flippin I usually ask the guy in the back of my boat to come up front and we both flip from the front. Ask your fishing buddy why they call that a flippin deck in his boat and why is it so big???maybe he will get the hint! Quote
bigbass Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 gather up a bunch of rocks and throw them where my buddy is fishing...lol!!!! In all seriousness, I've been in that situation a many of times before I bought myself a boat. If your buddy is throwing soft plastics and trolling slow I would cover a lot of water around me with a spinnerbait or a crankbait. I've noticed it really depends on how the man up front on how fast he trolls to what bait I throw. Quote
D.Taylor Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 There are some days when you just take it like a man. Throw a different bait if hes flipping the holes ask if you can paralell the grass line. Maybe Fish a rat over the top of the grass or try to locate holes farther back in the grass. Quote
chad km5qf Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Been in this "boat" before, LOL. First off, if youre in the back with the ice chest he can get his own *&^% beer. Secondly throw something totally different into the same holes ie topwater or sluggo. Short of buying a new boat yourself, find a new fishing buddy. Quote
crankbait Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 I push him off the front of the boat and drive away laughing as I eat his cheese sandwich and drink his Nehi orange soda...! > That will teach him to catch fish.! Quote
Super User 5bass Posted March 6, 2005 Super User Posted March 6, 2005 Try draggin' a Carolina Rig around since some fish will spook out and then come back when your boat has passed.I learned that the hard way, just like you're doing. Or (as some stated above) pitch and flip the same holes with something TOTALLY different than your partner. Then, when you get back to the ramp..... 1.Run to your truck 2.Drive as fast as you can to the nearest Ranger Boats dealer 3.Buy one of the new Z Series Comanche's Problem solved! Quote
Chris Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 I have sat in the back of the boat pitching a kreature bait while the front guy pitched a jig and I smoked him. I have also sat in the back pitching a jig while the front guy cranked and smoked him. I have pitched a senko while the front guy pitched a jig and I matched fish for fish with him. I have sat in the back and throwing a spinnerbait through the trees that the front guy just jigged and jerked nice fish behind him. Maybe this will give you ideas Quote
Fatdaddy150 Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Just mix it up a little bit. Try a different bait, color, or size. I remeber a couple years ago I was in this situation me and the boat owner were pitching baby brush hogs in june bug color.. Only thing the fish would hit. Of course he was catching more fish than me had me by three keeps with an hour to go I added spike it dipn die to the tails of my bait. Had to have made a difference boated three keeps the last hour, he boated zero. A little change may actually be a huge improvement. Point is be willing to try something different. VTbasskid16 Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 These guys have it on the nose. Some baits you could try: A floating worm, slugo, senko. These can go anywhere and can get into those holes. They are also very different then a jig. If he misses one, these make great follow up baits. Quote
squid Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Tritonman and I take turns Front ending each other...lol...but the sad truth is...the guy in the back always beat the guy in the front...lol. We would each try something different until a pattern showed then both fish that pattern. If doing a pro-am get to his boat early enough to see what he has on his rods...then match him...if he front ends you, change up and out fish him. Remember FLW sees a pro as someone who owns a boat, not someone who can fish..so be the PRO and out fish the boat owner if he is front ending you really bad. Drop Shot, Texas and Carolina Rigs should work well and Crank the hell out of him too...lol Besides, isn't it more fun to beat the PRO? lol Quote
tritonman Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Yep, I agree with squid... though i must of been in the back of the boat alot last year, as I caught the snot out of them over squid ;D Quote
AOY Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005 Thanks for the advice guys. I went this morning and caught two from the back of the boat with three guys fishing. Two was the record today as we mostly trolled and marked spots for an upcoming tourney--they're going to pre-fish next weekend. The two guys fishing with me are partners for the tournament and we were all just trying to throw different search lures. I think I actually turned them on to my idea. I threw right behind their crankbaits with a spinnerbait and I caught the first two--a 3 lb'er and a chunky 1.5. They both switched to a spinnerbait and in no time the guy in the middle was throwing the same color as me and caught a nice 3 lb'er. We didn't fish long but I think I might have given them an idea for the tourney! I decided to try something different and I paid off. Now, as for the weedlines.... Quote
Wormy Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I would ask your bud to let you come up front with him. Most boats even the 17' ers have enough room for two up front to pitch and flip or cast. I agree, it isn't much fun to have the guy in the front beat you up in the back of the boat. A buddy of mine did that to me one day crappie fishing. We were tied up to the only limb in the lake and the wind had me pushed away from the hole. Honestly, I nearly broke the tip of my spinning rod when I hit him in the top of the head trying to cast over him. Bet he won't do that again even though we both laughed about it afterwards... Quote
Brett_F Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 My buddy will pitch and flip and it seems only in every other nice spot. If he sees me ignoring what he is giving me, which is a chance, he starts hitting them all. I couldn't ask for a more sporting fishing buddy. Although if he beats me out I have to hear about it. I mean hey he gave me the opportunity, right? Quote
