Super User roadwarrior Posted February 23, 2005 Super User Posted February 23, 2005 Does anyone fish for spots? I catch them incidently when fishing for largemouth and smallmouth, in both rivers and lakes. My question is: Is there something someone is doing to specifically target Kentucky bass? Lures, locations, techniques? Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 23, 2005 Super User Posted February 23, 2005 I 've never fished for them but for what I know they are creatures of the depths, they prefer deeper water than LMBs and smalljaws. Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-98375 Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 Down here in west central bama we have several great places to chase spots within a hour or 2. Holt lake on the warrior river is the one I fish the most, it has a very good population of spots. The biggest I've got sofor is 5 but I know that there's some much bigger. Since I havent yet fished for smallies I think you'll find they have a lot in common, both like currunt, both like cooler water and both are deeper than a LM. Plus they both fight a lot harder:) I normally fish small worms, jigs, and CB. They tend to school, so find 1 find more. Deep wood is hard to beat if it's close to current. Here's a picture of the biggest spot I've seen up close,6lbs of mean green fighting machine:) This spot came off a CB early on lake mitchell on Feb 5th in current, once the current was cut off the bite stoped. Also, night with black spinner single blade SB yo-yoing will get your arm jerked off good luck Danny Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-98375 Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 also wanted to add, one of the best baits I've found in a long time is the spotsticker, it's nothing but a round jig head, long hook and I rig a senko type worm weedless. The vertical fall is great and they will eat it up. Quote
Shad_Master Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 Several years ago, I hired a guide on Table Rock and he introduced me to the drop-shot and wacky rig method. It was in late June and the bass were suspended at 30' over 70' of water. Since then I have fished for them at TR on my own, with varying success. One thing I have noticed is that they fight more like a Small Mouth than a Large Mouth (often running at the boat or going deep). Quote
gamblerOH Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 I'm with RAUl. I fish Kentucky lake and Barkley so I have caught them, not sure how or why though. It does seem I have caught most of them while fishing for smallies though, maybe they have more in common with a smallie than a largemouth.I tournament fish so if your onto something please let me know, since I dont know of anyone who specializes in spots they may be an untapped resource!!! Bassattackr Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 I too fish table rock, but usually not specifically for spots. They can usually be taken on drop shot rigs in clearer water or deep jigging works well also. 40+ feet is not uncommon for them at all at TR, even in the james river arm. ps. Hi Raul! ;D Quote
bassinjack Posted February 23, 2005 Posted February 23, 2005 most of the spots i cought in oklahoma came shallow while i was targeting large mouth they came off mostly texas rigged and wacky rigged senko's of varios colors they seemed to be shallow in the laydowns from 2 to 8 feet of water when the lake i fish was up tight lines Jack Quote
Chris Posted February 24, 2005 Posted February 24, 2005 I have a creek down the road from me that is loaded with spots and smallmouths and some bass that are a cross of both. I think they call them mean mouths? Anyhow Most of the smallmouth can be caught along the shore rocks and lumber. The spots are always in the channel and around the bridges. I have caught them on smaller crankbaits and with a slider worms. I just bounce from one deep hole to the next and 90% of the bass I catch when doing that will be spots. Quote
