Detroit3Pistons Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I've been wanting to learn how to fish a Jig for a while now. I was thinking If the next time I went fishing all I would bring is a one rod with a Jig on it and some different Jig's and trailers. Have you ever tried this with it leading to you fishing a bait better? Thanks Quote
Stickling Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 tryed it, didnt make me better with a jig, waste of my time, and bahh i didnt like the theory of it. I might try it again on a diffrent pond but where i was, they werent hungry for jig. Quote
JT Bagwell Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Taking a rod with just a jig on it and will definately make you a better jig fisherman. Jigs are a tough bait to learn and the reason most people can't catch fish with them is a lack of confidence. For the most part you will not catch a lot of fish on a jig, but the ones you do catch will be bigger. Do exactly what you said and take just one rod with a jig tied on and fish it until you start catching bass. You won't be sorry. Here is a fish I caught on a 1/16th oz jig with a Zoom Big Salty Chunk on the back. JT Bagwell Quote
Stickling Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 jt u look like a person i used to play computer with at a computer store. LOL Quote
Bud_in_OR Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I think you would be doing the correct thing. Make sure you don't take your 'go-to' lure along. You won't get past the tenth pitch or flip with the jig before you start leaning toward your tackle box. Your go-to lure probably will not work in the same water that a jig will excell in. Your procedure is the only way I learned to fish a jig or spinner-bait. A person can go without these essential tools for a long time if he doesn't knuckle down and force feed himself (read 'Leave the Rapalas and Traps at home'). Bud Quote
squid Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 This is something I should try and do with my spinnerbaits and jigs. Do one on one day and another the other and just fish them for 8 hours till I get the feel for them. Just love the top, crank and worms much better...lol Quote
Chris Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I am a prime example of a guy who was not a jig fan at one time. I had to force myself to learn how to fish it to be competitive in tournaments. I have had many high finishes because I took the time to learn this lure and I am glad I did. You have got to just spend time and use it and kinda make yourself look like a fool until you get the hang of it. You will be setting the hook on limbs and stumps until you figure out what a bite feels like. I did the same thing until I had it down pat. Quote
D.Taylor Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Do not get discouraged fish it for 2 hrs and if nothing happens go back threw the same areas with a different bait. If you dont get bit on that bait they might no be there or be hungry. Quote
JT Bagwell Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Stickling, Sorry but that wasn't me that you played computer games with. If he looked like me though he must have been a good lookin' son of a gun. ;D JT Bagwell Quote
Mattlures Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 That is exactly how you learn. I used to force my self to learn swimbaits by only bringing them and nothing else. The temptation can get the best of you if you bring your confidence baits. you would be better off leaving them at home. Quote
Fatdaddy150 Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I have used this technique several times it works!! One other thing I have done is about eight years ago I was catching a ton of fish with a 7" texas rigged worm in a shallow stump field. I was just fun fishing and the fish were very aggresive. I thought what the heck I am gonna throw a jig, something I rarely done at the time because I did not have confidence in it. I started catching fish on the jig and most of them were better fish than the ones I was catching on the worm I was hooked. Something you might try with techniques you aren't very familiar with make yourself try them when the fishing is very good and as long as you keep catching fish your confidence will grow very fast. Of course the two techniques I used were very similar. Probably won't help much in ten foot of water catching suspended bass with a crankbait then going the jig, two completly different baits and techniques stay away from that or your confidence will go down. ldogg Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I agree with D.Taylor. I've used that technique of limiting my time with a new bait so I don't get discouraged but also go back and fish the same area with a "goto" bait. Once I've caught a couple of fish I go back to the technique i'm trying to learn. Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-98375 Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 many years ago I fished with a freind who is know for flipping, pitching jigs. That day I learned that I better know how to fish them. He got 3 over 5 and this was in the middle of the alabama summer. Now, I have one tied on every time I go. It's a must have bait in my opinion. And I did just take jigs with me for a few trips to better understand them. good fishing Danny Quote
