I have often wondered if ABC having Byron Velvick as the bachelor was actually a 6 week long commercial. After all ESPN is owned by ABC, and ESPN owns BASS. HMMMMM!

LOL

I had the same discussion yesterday with a friend of mine about the Velvick deal.

Good articles, JT, I also have been printing a few for future reference. I'm especially interested in your views on dropshotting, a technique I plan on using exclusively this year.

I also had a question for you about fishing articles in general. My question involves the use of actual brand names of tackle and lure manufacturers in fishing articles. It would seem that in most articles I read, and I read a lot of them, that there are almost always names of certain lure companies named in articles.  I understand that giving an example is important and that telling your readers what lures are better suited for certain techniques is standard, but it would sometimes seem that wrapped up in a two or three page article, is a commercial trying to get out. Know what I'm sayin? I'm not saying this about all articles, just probably a little over half of the ones I read in magazines. "Bassin" magazine for example has articles like this, and even has a little box at the end of each article showing the "manufacturers mentioned".  Another publication I've noticed this in is in the obvious "Live to Fish", or the new "Journal of Fishing"(or something like that) put out by Berkley, which is pretty much just a catalog. The articles in the front of this mag are obviously written just to plug the products they are selling. As a fisherman, I would just rather view the catalog rather than read a phoney article that just tells me to use a certaiin type of worm with a specific type of line. This makes me wonder: Do lure manufacturing companies actually ask writers to do a column about a technique, and then pay them to mention the lure name a minimum amount of times? Does it go even deeper than than that like contracts and stuff? This has always been on my mind ever since I subscribed to my third or fourth fishing magazine. This is also a reason why I love the internet and sites like this one. I can veiw and print quality articles and endless resources whithout(most of the time) commercial interuptions.

JT I recieve them by email and print them for future reference. I also wanted to say that it is great that you are also a part of the basstalk section so that way when we have questions on a subject you get back to us right away. Keep up the great work and looking foward to more articles.

Good articles, JT!  I find your advice vey enlightening, indeed.  I am new to this forum (I found Bass Resource through google..the best fishig site i have found on the internet!  Looking forward to learning more from you and the others this year as I try to tackle the clear lakes of northern California.  Moved here from Indiana back in '97 and hadn't done any fishing since then until last year..do you believe it? Bought a small boat and "re-investing" in fishing gear and knowledge.  My how the techiques and tackle have changed!!  I still have a 1987 Shimano GT 2000 bantam that I just tore down and cleaned, greased and lubed over the weekend, along with my other 12 reels...what a job.  But it was relaxing and I am getting the urge to hit the water as soon as it warms abit.  If you or anyone has any ideas about the clear lakes and best fishing techniques, I am all ears! Thanks! :-X

Thank you all very much.

Danarchy,

You bring up some very good questions.

I do not know of any company that pays writers to mention their products a minimum number of times. Some writers do receive a lot of comp (free) items from companies. By doing this the writers now have a specific brand that they can refer to.

Then you have the Writers that are also Tournament Anglers. Some of them (myself included) are sponsored by various companies both within and outside of the fishing industry. This adds a different dimension to the articles. These anglers have much greater product knowledge of specific brands. While some may come off as a commercial, they are not intended to. It is usually the result of just knowing so much about a particular bait or other product line.

HOWEVER, there are those that will plug a product for twenty minutes straight and never answer the original question. They will talk non-stop about their "favorite" brand of crankbaits when you asked them about a lake you might visit next year.

What I would suggest is disregarding any specific brands that you see mentioned in an article. UNLESS, you trust the person writing the article and don't feel as though you are the target of a sales pitch. Or you can just take note of the brands and product lines and examine them more closely when you have time. That way they ultimate decision maker is you.

J.T.

Although I spend most of my "fishernet" time here at B.F.R.G., I do occaisionally surf other sites (less and less since I'm finding this site is the best on the web). I've recently come across your new articles re-posted on other web sites and I feel a kind of pride, like "I can ask him a question any time I want, because I know where he hangs out." We're lucky to have you here. Great articles J.T., great forums Glenn (and members), and overall, a great web site. Keep up the good work everybody!

Thanks,

Brad

"The magazines are about 14- to 18-months behind what is really going on so figure that you will read about updates sooner or later." from Craig DeFronzo's Advanced Dropshotting

Here's just another reason why the internet resources are so handy. Does this quote seem accurate to you? I'm starting to think that with all of the articles online, and pros interacting on boards like this, one doesn't need magazine subscriptions to stay on top of the game, especially with some of those "pluggers" I mentioned before. Once again, good advice J.T., keep up the good work. I wouldn't be as successfull of an angler if it weren't for online resources.
