MasterBasster09 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Fished for the first time on the big lake this weekend. Tough ..tough conditions but at least the weather was nice. Muddy water from the flooding we have had here this week made for a tough day all around. I'm not sure where the bass are hiding right now but they are hiding good. Wasn't seeing anything much on the fishfinder and i was staying pretty much back in the creeks and coves where the water was starting to clear up. The main river was still raging pretty good. The bite was non existant. We caught 2 white bass on crankbait and that was it. We left after about 4 hours of hard fishing and throwing everything we had at them. The wind got bad(It was supposed to be calm according to the waetherman.) and the fish just had lockjaw. I'm not sure where they were but we could not find them in the creeks and coves. Maybe they were back out in the main river system. I really just had no idea where to look. Tough first trip all around though. Quote
hookingem Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Here in Va I had a similar outing yesterday. The water was high, had cooled down some due to the rain, and was stained bad. Couldn't seem to buy a bite! Oh well it was a pretty day and I love spending the day on the water. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 14, 2011 Super User Posted March 14, 2011 That's a tough one, but if it were me, I would put on a black/blue Chatterbait with a Rage Craw trailer, and cover as much water as possible, especially around flooded brush. Look at it this way. You got nowhere to go but up from here on out. You'll find 'em next time. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 15, 2011 Super User Posted March 15, 2011 How long after the front passed through the area did you go out? What is the water temperature? If the water was dirty they would be holding against some structure after feeding before the storm moved through. As you know, flood waters will disturb the rivers and lakes to the point of making fishing very difficult so what you experienced would have happened to all of us. I bet when the water gets warmer and clears up you will let us know that you clobbered them. Quote
MasterBasster09 Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 It had been a couple of days since the rain but we had severe flooding down here. Plus we had a cold front come through the night before. Water temps were around 49-51 degrees. Winds got pretty high as the day went on. We had bluebird skies that day and i threw a spinnerbait alot in heavy cover but got nothing on it. My thinking was the flash and vibration might trigger some strikes. We also threw Cranks and traps alot in cover but still ...nothing. We tried fishing out closer to the main river channel but the water was so muddy and full of debris that it made it hard to troll or run the big motor. Everyone i talked to had a tough day down there last weekend. I'm definitely ready to get some clearer water and warmer water temps. We may have caught them saturday but i think we just couldn't find them. If you don't get the lure in front of their face in these kind of conditions then they ain't gonna bite. Quote
brushhoggin Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Sam nailed it. i fished the exact same conditions on my river system this weekend, same water temps and everything. only ones i caught were found by some matted grass on all the wind blown banks in the backwaters. big lizards did the trick, still only a few bass, but decent. they were all pale as crap too Quote
breezy Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 All of the water around here is very high and muddy. I don't think I have even caught a fish since all of this rain. :'( Can't wait for things to warm up and hopefully clear up a little too! Quote
